  1. If it's not the switch itself, a common problem on some older turntables with idler-wheel drive is that the rubber on the wheel has dried out so that it doesn't drive the platter correctly. Gee, I missed your reply all these months... sorry for that! Got a new needle in the meantime (seems it's difficult to find one for my Shure thingie, but there's a funny "nostalgia radio" shop in Zurich that had one left). Playing one of my few recent acquisitions, a nice selection covering 1950-56:
  2. Same here! And these Originals contain a) too many easy listening albums, and b) too many albums reissued earlier by Verve/Universal/GRP in much better editions with additional tracks. Not a great series, all in all, but still at least they haven't stopped completely yet...
  3. octo moron?
  4. sorry for being late to the party - happy birthday!
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. gee... should have been, of course...
  7. welcome... and of course that been "handy".

    Funny Rat

There's a story on Andrew Cyrille in the latest Wire - haven't read it yet (it's by that Andy Hamilton I think), but I thought it might interest some of you!
  9. I am Swiss and I am opposed to the banking secrecy, but I have a hunch that GoodSpeaks eff-offs me, too...
  10. What's that Joe Farrell project mentioned above? Never heard about it... he's a fine player, but I wonder what would they collect? I don't know much of his solo output, but I think besides some CTI albums, there are some on Xanadu and one Fantasy (I don't have any of them)... all of that not being material Mosaic usually lays hands on, so I wonder...
  11. Here's a PDF catalogue - comes in very hand! Universal Originals There are some Verve By Requests listed (Desmond, Dearie, Mendes a.o.), not sure that's just a mistake or those have come out in new Originals reissues again, or if they were just incorporated into the new series and will be kept in print in the original VBR packaging (VBRs did contain some bonus tracks, though!)

    Ian Carr RIP

I've never felt much of an urge checking out his Nucleus and other electric stuff, but the band he co-led with Don Rendell was mighty fine - I love those albums! r.i.p.
  13. brown rose on xanadu has the same 1956 sessions as the vogue vol 2 and the thompson/gryce (vogue vol 2 unlike the others has the trio with trunk; there is also a cd called lucky sessions with the trio plus vogue vol 1); the high note is a different session from 1958/59 with michel hausser... (there is also theJiP disc with sammy price btw...); thompson is on at least two sessions of the clarke americans cd... Ah yes, Brown Rose.... I once bought that thinking it was an album I didn't have... was lucky that they took it back in the shop
  14. To get the complete Lucky in Paris, btw, you'll also need the Kenny Clarke disc from the EMI "Americans Swinging in Paris" series. It contains some marvellous stuff, including one session with Thompson.
  15. Lucky in Paris (doesn't it have another title, something with "Flower" maybe?) and the Pochonet are the Swing sessions, those were on two "Original Vogue Masters" CDs (one of those added Lucky's great half - a trio date with Peter Trunk on bass - of an album shared I think with Bud Powell - that half was the bonus on the Duke Jordan "Original Vogue Masters" CD). This is good news, but still... the Paris stuff would be way too much for a Select and it wouldn't be that cool if they picked sessions for just one or two of the various labels - but the fact alone that so many labels would be involved (RCA/BMG or rather now Sony/BMG owns the Swing/Vogues, EMI owns the Ducretet-Thomson sessions, Universal the Barclay ones) would make this an almost impossible project, I assume. So indeed the ABC stuff... what would that consist of? The stuff from the "Tricotism" CD, also the Oscar Pettiford big band twofer? And what else? These two have both been ripped off by Lonehill or another of those cheapo labels. I'd absolutely love to see a set compiling the sessions with Milt Jackson, but Mosaic has never done anything by Savoy, I think? But that would be my LT dream/wish set, if I had the choice, that's for sure! (I guess though maybe Lonehill will do that eventually, just as they did with Curtis Fuller's sessions... too bad, I'd much more see Mosaic doing it!)
  16. Gibert in Paris - most amazing used CD selection I've seen!
  17. weird indeed, maybe they didn't anticipate that universal would get active again... (still, the mps catalogue is rich enough for two or three companies ) (also, somewhat strange that universal started again so shortly after licensing stuff to that promising music guy who make the japanese looking reissues... almost as if he got them thinking) and promising music is also selling mps stuff from universal http://www.promising-music.com/index.php?o...1&Itemid=35 here it says (in german) that promising music is a jointventure with universal http://www.jazzthing.de/news/080306/2.shtml are the candoli albums the first mps albums by the spaniards? There's a thread somewhere about the Promising Music reissues. I think it was mentioned there that they'll co-exist in the sense the Universal does the more mainstream stuff (and the pop dreck comps) and Promising Music does some of the more adventurous stuff (though still no Cecil Taylor - seems Promising Music is more into the electric jazz kind of adventures, alas... and they ask ridiculous prizes for their reissues, too... their George Duke release costs more than half of the complete MPS Duke box released by Universal, at least in stores here... and of course that one album is part of the box as well). edit: here's the Promising Music MPS thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=39234 Anyway, back on topic now... that Candoli/Rosolino looks good, but I guess those session Free for All heard would be even nicer to have one some well-done reissue!

    Mat Mathews

I recently got hold of "The Modern Art of Jazz", finally! Mighty fine album, as has been mentioned by others in other threads (don't ask me where, I don't think there's a Mathews thread here). Had "Wild Kitten" for several years before, so I was familiar. Definitely one of the finest on the accordion, r.i.p.
  19. weird... now that Universal has become a wee bit active again in things MPS (not suggesting they would release anything by that Conti... who? isn't that a p0rn star anyway?) - how come FRS dare to rip off such things? And where do they take them? Japanese reissues? Or did Candoli and/or Rosolino get the rights of their MPS albums and this actually is a legit reissue?
  20. That's a great box - lovingly done! Really an exception to the rule. And it seems indeed that it was legit as well. That Candoli/Rosolino sure looks nice, too!
  21. Thanks for the tip. Very good ones! The Thielemans is fine, the Viseur was a big surprise - lovely accordion playing in a perfectly straight setting! And of course I fully agree on the Jaspar and Thomas!
  22. I've seen that boot - hilarious! Great session though, but I'd rather look for a used copy than getting the boot! As for your Evans question: the final Evans trio was quite different, much harder swinging than any of his earlier units, I think (though I am of the opinion that Evans swung, anyway, even in early years). I'm quite sure that any of his trio w/Johnson/La Barbera should convince anyone who's into good piano trio music, at least. I'd say give it a chance. But you might as well want to check out some smaller releases, instead of going for the box directly!
  23. You weren't really excited about "De Pois do Amor, o Vazio" about five years ago. "Too nice and easy..." http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=162276 And you're still offended after five years? I guess it would be different to get to hear all of this music! Also, five years ago I had almost no interest in anything Shorter did after he left Miles, by now I have a few Weather Report albums and learned to dig them!
  24. Wouldn't these albums make for a nice Mosaic Select? I've not heard any of them (Iska, Moto Grosso, Supernova).
  25. Funny, the used books store where I just bought some used vinyl (see here) had some Musica Jazz reissues of MPS albums, including the Hubbard one with Eddie Daniels and the Dizzy Reunion Berlin one). I've seen that Edelhagen, thought it was one of the comps, with that lousy cover.... going from the tunes they do, it should be a pretty commercial affair, but I'll get an earful when I see it next!
