  1. Could've guessed that based on your avatar. You ought to check out some Threadgill, really! Strong beautiful music, not fitting into any clean-cut categories... tubas, accordions, guitars and various other instruments in various bands... I'd not start with Air (that's more "classic" free jazz, though what the hell is "free jazz"...), but some of his later albums might be quite to your liking! Check some out on those free online listening sites (assuming there's some Threadgill there... I don't use these sites). btw, my Braxton just arrived and it's a number close to 2000 - I know they're not selling them by numbers, but if they sell several hundreds a piece, being in the 1500 to 2000 area with a 2008 release might indeed be quite a succes, no?

    Miles who?
  7. The chap who wrote the liner notes of the Verve album "Stan Meets Chet" (recorded in Chicago with fine support by Jodie Christian on a disgustingly out of tune piano) calls "Jordu" (Duke Jordan's great tune) a 16-bar blues... gee!
  8. Haven't some RVGs gone OOP a few months ago, when that long list of deletions was made public?
  9. That description is for the original box, I'm sure: The music is fantastic, absolutely essential. The notes in the original version were quite good, I think (at least the track-by-track ones, can't remember much about the essay).
  10. Does this mean you've been ripped off??? No - amazon only charges the buyer after the seller has confirmed shipping the goods. As a marketplace seller you have to confirm shipment within 7 days - if you don't, the process is suspended until you confirm shipment. That's maybe how the vendors *should* handle it, but my card was charged for two Selects that were not in stock (see above)... charged, and only ten whole days later - and the prize of the respective boxes doubled in that time - I got a cancellation/re-fund email... for the re-fund to actually take place, that'll take several more days... Anyway, there's still hope, as both my latest Pacific Trios and Shank/Cooper orders were charged now as well... hope this one's not another idiot vendor and the fact that my card's been charged this time really means I'll get the sets! But I'm not holding my breath any longer!
  11. That's great news Chuck! I'll wait and order the Smith once the Freeman's around (you guys will be in for a real treat!!!) - got everything else that's available otherwise! (Except for Mitchell/Bowie, I'll stick with my AEC box)
  12. Picked up my mono box at the post office on the way home - will disappear now...
  13. yes indeed! welcome back!
  14. Yes, that may be... I'm only into his earlier music, roughly 52-64, after that I don't have that much (well, most of his MPS albums, but he recorded a huge pile of albums I don't feel like getting more of those later ones...)
  15. Lou Levy Lou Andreas Salomé Friedrich Nietzsche
  16. bumpity bump got this one in a local store - paid way too much as I was completely unaware that it was still around: Hugh Masekela - The Lasting Impressions Of Ooga Booga It combines two albums recorded at the same live gig (missing one tune from the follow up that was released many years later) by Masekela's quartet. Here's the discographical date (from Doug Payne): And here are the AMG reviews, of the original album and of the CD reissue, written by Bruce Eder: in short: this easily gets the royal seal of approval!
  17. I don't even think the EU "Live in Tokyo" gives any year of release, but I'm at work and don't have it at hand. I haven't played it yet, but I guess to my ears it will sound ok (at least) anyway...
  18. new one in my house - nice for late night listening (been tested twice now...): Lorez Alexandria - Alexandria the Great (the supporting cast features Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Horn and Ray Crawford, among others)
  19. Yes, I can see what you feel about Cole and OP. I still feel the same to some extent, but I grew to enjoy OP's music a lot over the past few months (as I've mentioned elsewhere). I merely wanted to point out that Cole is much more a point of reference for OP than Tatum, in my opinion (YMMV - ha, done it, used that silly acronym for the first time!)
  20. I don't quite get the comparison of Peterson and Tatum. It's more like Peterson and Nat Cole to my ears... if Cole wouldn't have turned into the big superstar singer, he might be known and estimated nowadays as the superior piano player he actually was.

  23. With me, I guess the Pac was a 9, the Shank/Coop musically a 7 or so (but I wanted it as badly as 9 - I love the Shank Pacific Mosaic and wanted to get the Select ever since it came out...), the Richards may have been a 5, the Pullen and Dexter a 7 or so... anyway... my card was just charged for another Shank/Coop order, so there's hope again (but this whole thing is probably EMI's way of teaching us modesty... hope is there to fade away slowly, ain't it so?)
  24. I think that's where I got them from...
  25. Do you also have to pay tax on goods from the European Union? If so, you'll have a hard time finding stuff for attractive prices outside your country... Yes. I haven't figured out how exactly things work, but big vendors such as amazon deduct the (French/German) VAT and if an order has a value of more than 50 CHF, the Swiss VAT gets added (7%), plus (that's the main part), the post demands a pricey fee (18 CHF currently, sometimes it seems to be only 12, I don't quite see a system in it). Anyway, with both French and German Amazon offering free shipping on orders over 20€, I can get good prices now and then (while good price inside my little country are only possible in special sales... there, I can get discs for about the prices that CDUniverse or Amazon USA usually offers...) Of all the black-hole Selects, that's probably the one I'm least put out about (although I'll probably regret that statement). Same here... didn't even try to find that one. But hey, as long as we don't know that was a mistake, let's just not bother about it!
