  1. Guess that's why I finally just bought "Streams" last week ... This new set definitely holds little interest ... I think the Tom Scott is the one album I don't know. It's neither a collection of Impulse's best albums nor a collection of rarities or oddballs. Seems almost like they're aiming at those that have no clue ... Re: Hines and Scott ... the Hines is a bit of an oddity, but a charming one - I wish for more playing time/solo space each time I listen to it. The Scott is brilliant, maybe the perfect example of the Turrentine/Scott team. The old GRP CD contained some substantial bonus tracks (but I think some cuts were still missing, compared to the vinyl releases of the material?) ... bet this time it'll be sans any bonus tracks? That would be a pity for the Ellington/Hawkins album, too ... just one bonus track there, but a gorgeous one (as is the whole album anyway). Also, for some, the Shelly Manne may be new? It has some prime Hawkins and some Eddie Costa, too. Mighty fine album, for sure (it was part of the recent Japanese Impulse reissue series, but I have a battered LP of it, too).

  3. Went on with Opp. 20 and 33 by the Schneider Quartet - what a great bunch of pieces, and thoroughly interesting to see the development and changes from one set to the next ... now playing Op. 33 by the Mosaïques - quite a contrast, but I guess these two are cool to have alongside!

    Vocalion

Thanks - I have ordered a few times and never had any problems. Off for a week of vacation tomorrow, will see if anything arrives in the meantime. If not, I'll deal with it afterwards.
  5. Had this in the mail yesterday, and played Op. 20 right away ... that then prompted me to search for this here: Played Opp. 1 and 2, now into Op. 17 (quite a difference indeed) and looking forward to their take on Op. 20 later today or maybe tomorrow. Don't have any complete set, so alas I am missing Op. 9 as of now.
  6. I bought his "Kenton Presents" LP a few days ago ... no time to listen so far. Sad news, always enjoyed him in Bud Shank's group.
  7. Many thanks, worked like a charm!

    Vocalion

Have not heard back and not yet received anything ... is that normal with Vocalion? It's been a few years since I last ordered, but the automated email I got, two weeks back, said they would get in touch asap ... and obviously they didn't. And yeah, I wand that Maupin!
  9. Great, thank you!
  10. Would be much appreciated - I'm home by now and have just checked my disc - faulty booklet, no scans of full notes included, and nothing on my computer, it seems ... I had totally forgotten the goof, enjoy that disc a lot, but it has been a while since I last played it.
  11. Oh, I would be interested ... never got those full notes, I think!
  12. True ... but that didn't exist back then
  13. Oh yes, that IS a great moment indeed!
  14. Yeah, but take out the master takes and this release wouldn't make much sense ... but yeah, this could have been Vol. 27 or they could throw in a fourth disc with a great live concert.
  15. [rasp]Teo, don't say that to me[/rasp] Can't say I'm too flabbergasted by this news ... still hoping for sets of the 1971 and 1973 tours (and maybe a 1972/73 sitar band set, too?) and more the like. But still interested enough to buy and hope for a couple of revelations.
  16. Great catch! It's worth alone for "Squatty Roo" that Johnny Hodges made with Dizzy's band during the "Have Trumpet, Will Excite" session! I heard that track on the Hodges disc of one of those Verve best of compilations from the 90s and fell in love with it, but didn't quite feel like buying that disc for one lone track ... was all the happier to find it again on this compilation!
  17. won't play for me, alas, but I bet it's a hoot!
  18. Haha, I was somewhat faster ... but at one time I scored lucky on several early ones (from the first or first two batches), allowing me to fill almost all gaps I still had, then ran into the "Collectors' Disc" (which I had ignored for years, not being aware I ought to buy it ... it was still around when I had learnt) ... two more gaps (the Dinah and Schifrin) were filled with the help of a forum member, cost me quite some ... but most of them I picked up when they were still around, luckily. Great series, too bad it was so short-lived! Come to think of it, as I just mentioned buying the Chris McGregor "Jazz/The African Sound" in Warsaw ... the Quinichette, which was amongst the last ones in the series, I bought in Warsaw, too, 15 1/2 years earlier.
  19. For Dinah Washington, there was the Hip-O-Select box ... wonderful, but not if you're not into that kind of vocal R & B/jazz mix, I guess. The Jack Teagarden, to me, is desert island stuff - an amazing album I fell in love with quickly but only slowly realized how important it got to be for me, eventually. The Ray Brown is mighty fine (I think his best leader album I know ... beats the Brown/Jackson double disc set, I'd say, and "Jazz Cello" anyways). The Louie Bellson is a bit of a mixed bag, some great Tadd Dameron and Wardell Gray (one arrangement and one solo, I think?Just checked ... it's Dameron's "For Europeans Only", but it seems arranged by Don Redman as are all four big band tracks), but mostly it's by a small group with Don Elliott and Joe Puma, that I find quite boring (maybe I haven't yet figured out the subtleties going on there, who knows ...) here's the Dinah box, in case (prices have gone up into the 100ish range, used to be quite a bit cheaper, guess it's on the way out): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fabulous-Keynote-Mercury-Singles-1943-1953/dp/B003YUK8I2 details for the VEE (no active DL link): http://ubu-space.blogspot.ch/2008/01/dinah-washington-best-in-blues-for.html
  20. The James Newton is excellent!
  21. I guess I will bite ... but let's wait and see until we get the list of contents. Likely, I have most or a whole lot of it already, but there are some things I have on dubious releases (being too late to be around to pick up all the vinyl twofers, I have only one that will be in scope here, I tihnk). But Mosaic doing Savoy ... does that open up new possibilities, like complete sets by the likes of Frank Wess, Milt Jackson, Kenny Clarke, Curtis Fuller, Yusef Lateef, maybe in some smart combinations (i.e. add the Lateef to the Fuller, combine Jackson and Klook ...)?
  22. Care to elaborate on that? I just gave it a first spin and enjoyed it. And I still consider the long familiar "Politician Man" a great track!
  23. Okay, guess I can skip it then ... don't really have all that much by/with Mance, guess he doesn't speak to me as much as others do.
  24. Thanks for solving the riddle and clarifying!
