gave this one a first spin yesterday: why is mine only 2CDs when this page here says it's three? http://www.rhino.co.uk/rhino-store/products,three-from-the-vault-3cd_103.htm is that just a typo? below in the description, they talk of two discs.

Fruscella is wonderful! For once, this is one of the better ways to get his music (most of it): http://www.amazon.fr/Complete-Works-Tony-Fruscella/dp/B00004LMQY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1278336068&sr=1-8 Seems pretty OOP, but maybe you'll be lucky and find it somewhere... it duplicates the Atlantic album with Eager of course but that Eager 2CD set you picture above is mostly a cheapo hack job anyway (I have it as well and was slighty pissed to see how much of it I already had elsewhere...)

Oh, and a wonderful young American singer/songwriter, Eilen Jewell http://www.eilenjewell.com/
-
lately: Poco Johnny Cash (well, expanding my collection, not really a new discovery) Elvis Little Feat (amazing! though I've only heard early stuff w/Lowell, not sure if I ought to check out more... not right now anyway.)

Carlos Ward Don Carlos Friedrich Schiller

Yeah, and Switzerland is behind the iron curtain judging from American "knowledge" of geography
-
That's indeed helpful... but I guess in the end any "serious" collector will end up with lots of duplicates, eventually!
-
That's how I see it, no matter if it's by the rules or if others call me "misguided and misinformed".

As for Ghana... seems to me a penalty wasn't enough for that fowl! It should have simply counted as a goal (looks to me like it was almost behind the line anyway)!
-
Late reply... I have some of the Intégrale (Vols 1-3), the Sony Hot Fives & Sevens, and the RCA 4CD set - so I'm in a similar situation... should I go on with the Intégrale despite all the duplification, should I get the Mosaic... what about the darn 12 or 13 Chrono Classics for which I spent way too much and that will (at least half of them) be superfluous when I get the Mosaic (and the rest, I guess, when I go on with the Intégrale... which would triple the stuff in the Mosaic...) I guess I'll just keep buying and live with duplicates - similar with Ellington. There's just no way to have most of it and have it all only once, it seems! Though with Satchmo, if you had nothing at all yet, the Intégrale would do that job, I guess!

Gee, Ghana was fun for the second part of the first half... then it got boring... hope they'll find some more energy to win now!
-
There's also this now, it seems (never saw it, wouldn't bother, I guess... but if worse comes to worse): http://www.amazon.com/Capitol-Sessions-1953-55-Duke-Ellington/dp/B000JBWWDI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1278049160&sr=1-1

Most (if not all) of the Reprise material ia available also in this format: Not all by far! If memory serves me right, the Reprise Ellington is one with very full discs, almost two albums per disc. But these Original Album Series sets are pretty nice to sample some new music, even more so as they can be found very cheap!

Very cool!

Newbury bargain thread (and bargains in general)
king ubu replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Just had something in my amazon.com basket - but newbury won't ship international any longer!? Weird... trying some other items, it would work... but not for the one I wanted! -
Happy Birthday!

Ah, I see... will let MC know about that!

As has been shortly mentioned in the Jazz in Paris thread, the new "Jazz in Paris Collector's Edition" reissue of Quincy Jones' "I Dig Dancers" contains a few bonus tracks that were omitted on the Mosaic set. I alerted Michael Cuscuna about it and just today was in touch with him again about details. He has no idea where these titles come from, and the new reissue gives no detail - it states: Hence the bonus tracks not on the Mosaic, "Close Your Eyes" and "Blues from Free and Easy" were (or are believed by Universal France to have been) released in 1984. Anyone has an idea where that might have been? Some more info, comparing the Mosaic discography with the new CD's informations: - for the Feb 27, Feb 29 and Apr 21 session, the line-up adds "prob. Roger Guérin (tp)" - the (new) notes by Alain Tercinet state that Terry left when Q decided to prolong his stay in Europe and that gave Guérin the chance to play in this band (Guérin has died only fairly recently, btw). - these same three sessions were held at Pathé-Magellan Studio, Paris (rec. eng. is Gerhard Lehner as in the Mosaic booklet) - "Close Your Eyes" (2:06) and "Blues from Free and Easy" (1:59) stem from the Feb 29 session - the Apr 21 date isn't double-guessed (I assume Mosaic did its homework more thoroughly there!) Here's the beginning of the discussion in the Jazz in Paris thread:

I've known most of the Q from the Mosaic set (which I love)! This one's kind of an old-fashioned big band album, as you might guess from the title. It's a lot of fun, mostly short tunes, featured soloists are, among others: Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Jerome Richardson, Phil Woods, Julius Watkins... and the band is star-studded! Will report on "Jazz Boom N°1" once I've heard it.

Listening to Quincy Jones - I Dig Dancers now - that and Jazz Boom N° 1 have arrived a few days ago. Nice fold-out digipacks (4-parts) with a page of english and french notes (or rather: french notes by Alain Tercinet and an english translation). About the bonus tracks on the Quincy (that are not part of the Mosaic box), there's no additional information. It just says: I guess that means that all five alternates/bonus tracks have been first released in 1984? Meaning Mosaic made a blunder there? Doug Payne has a nice review of the Q disc on his blog.

Did Mosaic make a blunder....
king ubu replied to John Tapscott's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I was hesitant to post here, as my first impression was rather negative (several weeks longer for delivery), but by now I'm a happy camper again, as all the shipments since the change of system slipped through custom (three so far). Before, I usually had to pay taxes - I'd rather wait two weeks longer (which may - or may not - be caused by custom anyway) and not pay anything! -
Powell was great... love him with Basie, John Carter or Randy Weston - quite a range! r.i.p.
