Someone at EMI's pulling the string, maybe? (If there's anyone left at EMI's, that is...)

Well, when I started buying Mosaics, 1US$ was about 1.50CHF - with the boxes at 16$ per disc, plus some 20$ shipping and 20$ of taxes, it was *still* cheaper than most discs I was used to buy in local stores! That may sound crazy, but when I first got these Trueblue catalogues, full with discs at 13 and 16US$, it was like heaven and I ordered huge piles of stuff (well, at least in summer after I earned some money on holiday jobs...) Anyway, with the $ having gone down and the Swiss Franc having gone up, it's close to 1=1 now and hence Mosaics got cheaper and cheaper in the past years... That's my perspective, but I guess among the folks here it's a rather unique one (he he, Unique, that's what some marketing/branding morons dubbed Zurich airport, btw).

I'd have bought the whole run a couple of weeks ago... just got a shipping notification on Octets (Vol. 3) - that one seems to be the most elusive by now.

I passed on the vinyl of it a while back. It was near mint too. Hardly had the nerve to hand it over to the pretty female cashier ! Like being a schoolboy and buying a copy of Penthouse.. Yeah, I could have just bought it on yinyl as well, but the CD has about three bonus tracks...

Early 70s, actually. Their first after returning from Apple, iirc? Yessir - and it's the funkiest album they ever did. John Lewis' comping on the first two tracks would have served the James Brown horn section perfectly. Thou sayeth thus that "Plastic Dream" is worth hearing? Just passed it by in a local sale this week... will return Saturday to check if it's still around!

"Introducing Jimmy Cleveland" and "It's All Right" by Wynton Kelly were both also part of the long-gone Verve Elite Edition CD series. The Cleveland is mighty fine (I *did* buy the Lonehill 2CD set but of course kept the VEE), the Kelly is nice, groovy... but rather on the light and easy side.

Sent in my order... Smith + Rich + Carter/Bradford - most excited about the third one, one of those that I'm very happy to get way before it's on the endangered list! And as for shipping... you merikins are so spoilt anyway! I used to go for the surface option for years, took 1.5-3 months - everything arrived, no damages, ever. Once they forgot an order of mine (including lots of Trueblue discs) and then sent it by airmail... 80% of the jewel cases from the trueblue part were cracked... great! So I continued using the surface option happily - another advantage was that the custom guys didn't check as closely as airmail, it seems... often rather expensive packages (in the 200-400$ range) slipped through. So it was a drag when they restricted the surface option to orders below 100$... but so far I was lucky. Some packages still manage to slip through, and I've had no badly damaged ones so far.

Wave has never been reissued since the old jewel case edition, prob. from the late 80s, right? At least that version's still all over the sales... must be one of the longest-in-print Verve discs! Will get that one and "Jobim" from the sales, then (got "Tide" already) - thanks, Bev!

My suggestion: get the "last chance" ones (if they're on your wantlist), if you can/if it suits with shipping costs, add something else (I just ordered both running low ones and threw in the Carter/Bradford Select to get the order just under 300$)... and if you have some extra cash, get some of the not yet running low/newer ones. I've done so in the past few years, have bought the Crusaders, Ellington Small Group, Chu and Braxton from the in-print ones (lots of it not played yet) and managed to get hold of almost all the "last chance" ones in time.

How's "Jobim"? http://www.allmusic.com/album/jobim-r241968 It's part of a sales on amazon.de...

Have no idea why, but more and more vendors on the marketplaces of amazon.de and amazon.fr are ceasing to offer international shipping, too... it's rather annoying for me, even more so as there's no Swiss amazon...

There was a thread about it, but I can't seem to find it... Pictured above is FSRCD 539 which is titled Something New, Something Blue + Swinging 'guys & Dolls' (2 Lp On 1 Cd) Stereo Edition. Then there's this one (mono version? - it's without the Guys & Dolls bonus): Something New, Something Blue (FSRCD 381). Is there really a difference between the two? Both seem to be still in print... the bonus would be nice, I assume, but I don't care too much for it. Anyone has compared the two versions? Btw, I don't know if the fact that there are two versions was discussed in the other thread.

I haven't heard all of the Capitol Jonah's but of those I've heard IMHO "Jumpin' With Jonah" (the Capitol album that really went by that title, that is) is one of the better ones, jazz-wise. The others I've heard are OK but you got to be in the mood for them and it is easy to see why they appealed to a MOR public too. Nothing to sneer at (his records may have served as an entry door to more substantial jazz for quite a few) but in a way he simply was the trumpet's Earl Bostic of those times (though if I had to pick one I guess I'd still go for Earl Bostic ). Yes, the actual Capitol album - that's one that was on CD a while ago and it's the one I got. It has a certain charm, and I dig Jonah's playing, but it get's somewhat formulaic after twenty minutes or so.

It's great! I played some of twice, before flipping the records... will need some time to sink in, but there are plenty of beautiful moments on it!

Which one do you have in mind? "I Dig Chicks"? The only Jonah discs I have so far are "Jumpin' with Jonah" and the compilation "Jumpin' with Jonah". Not sure I need too many more - they're very enjoyable but still I rarely play them.

Not exactly Legacy... anyone has details on this Avid Brubeck disc: http://www.avidgroup.co.uk/acatalog/info_CD__AMSC901.html They say it's "previously unreleased material recorded around the summer and autumn of 1958", studio transcriptions right from Joe Benjamin was to be replaced by Gene Wright. And what about Herman Wright? Did he play with the quartet between Bates and Benjamin? Bruyninckx has the bassist as "Herman 'Gene' Wright" for two entries (Feb 22, 1958 and Mar 5, 1958). Then, for summer 1958 (DB in Europe, Newport 1958, Jazz Impressions of Eurasia) Benjamin is listed, and beginnging with the one title from the Monterey 3CD compilation (Oct 5, 1958), it's Eugene/Gene Wright.
