Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

The Complete Roost Sonny Stitt Studio Sessions - CD1 -
The Griffin-Mobley is definitely radio - rather good quality but it wouldn't be enough for a CD (I have 36 minutes including stage intro and announcer talk... some music is cut, too. Bet there'd be more in someone's vault (maybe even in some radio station's vault, but lots of stuff has been destroyed since those days). Anyway, we're talking of 1969-09-01 in Cologne, Germany. There are three tunes on the first/main source plus one more from Italian radio. The Copenhagen material has been around - don't think anyone would release (other than RLR or some other such enterprise) though, sound isn't really good. It's from March 1968 and a little bit too much to fit onto two CDs.

Having a closer look, these are a bit more complete (with some live recordings) than I initially thought, but still not enough music there that I don't already have, I think.

Gee, am I the only one here who likes Zim Ngqawana's music? Anyway, bumping this thread again as I'm having my third go at the recent Blue Notes/Frank Wright disc, Spiritual Knowledge and Grace: It's really growing on me - very intense, powerful music. Not as warm, sunny and swinging as much of the ZA jazz I love so much, but there's still a lot of warmth in there - and a whole lot of intensity! The horns of Dudu and Frank lock up in some great playing - really a joy to hear! Makes me hope the promised future release from this tour ("the Blue Notes proper", as David Ilic's minimal CD liners say) will really happen! Btw, who's this David Ilic? I see he's written a few things for The Wire, but is he involved with Ogun in any way?

I sort of grew to like them... they're cool and of their time, but they're (in my humble opinion) far from being major artistic statements. "Deaf Dumb Blind" is my top one, "Thembi" and "Live at the East" the runners up, and "Karma" on fourth rank. The new reissue is good to have as it combines two of the better ones of Sanders' later Impulse albums. Totally agree with you though, Clifford: "Village" is cool, with some really good things (the suite giving the album its name!), while "Wisdom" is a more rambling effort... I think a well-selected CD of these albums (also including "Love in Us All", which has a highlight in "To John") could result in a terrific compilation. But there's quite a lot of rambling going on... again, it's of its time and that's good, but it doesn't really hold up for repeated listening nowadays.

Creed Taylor's handwriting, I guess...

Ah well, this obviously isn't a series that had any such intention behind it... rather just some more or less lackluster things pasted together. Let's just hope it sells well enough for more and hopefully more interesting reissues to follow!

Very cool news! (Johnny Richards, too!) Any info on the Christian?
-
What I meant were GRP/Impulse Master bonus tracks, not actual albums tracks. Universal hasn't done any reissues with bonus material for years now - the LPR series was the end of that, alas. Although the Amazon listings say there are bonus tracks on both the Scott and the Jackson, so who knows? Interesting! The "Love Cry" CD bonus tracks (from the GRP reissue) seem to be there as well! That's good news!
-
guess you need a weirdo audience for that (such as me)
-
Which is a contradictio in adiecto, of course, hence the grinning emoticon...

And try running some anti-malware stuff, too... Malwarebytes' Anti Malware is what I have... also got this after I'd been attacked (by one of these make-believe anti-virus things that stops your virus-programme from running - that was a nuisance!)

There's a whole run of these twofers coming from Universal over here... so far, word has been out on these: Albert Ayler - Love Cry / The Last Album Art Blakey - Jazz Messengers!!!!! / A Jazz Message Alice Coltrane - Universal Consciousness / Lord Of Lords Duke Ellington - Meets Coleman Hawkins / And John Coltrane Coleman Hawkins - Today And Now / Desafinado Milt Jackson - Statements / Jazz 'n' Samba Ahmad Jamal - Poinciana Revisited / Freeflight Elvin Jones - Illumination! / Dear John C. Sonny Rollins - On Impulse! / There Will Never Be Another You Pharoah Sanders - Village Of The Pharoahs / Wisdom Through Music Shirley Scott Trio - For Members Only / Great Scott!! Archie Shepp - For Losers / Kwanza Gabor Szabo - The Sorcerer / More Sorcery McCoy Tyner Trio - Inception / Reaching Fourth Too many contain one recently reissued album, alas, combining it with a rarer one (Shepp, Coltrane, Rollins) The Ayler is silly... would have made sense in this case to combine "The Last Album" with the companion album... also "Love Cry" had some fine bonus tracks that will be missing here for time (and "original album" crappity) reasons.

Yes, best wishes from me, too!

Help on discography for Mosaic Flip Phillips.

Interesting, thanks! Looking forward to hear those transfers, Mike! -
Happy Birthday, Bertrand!

Thanks a lot for sharing that, Lazaro! Much appreciated! (Got to wait till I'm on my own computer to watch the video, alas - but thanks for that, too, niko!)

LF: Ray Bryant - Alone with the Blues OJC CD

Enjoy Hans! A mighty fine disc! -
I don't buy many DVDs, but amazon UK has some good offers that I now and then go for: The Jean-Pierre Melville Collection Prices tend to go up and down quite some... there's a Chabrol box that went for under 10£, also a Rohmer box was very cheap once. Worth watching if you're interested, and with some patience you might get some good deals. I also got some "artificial eye" DVDs for very good prices (the Tarkovsky Companion, the Vigo Collection, and some single editions) - I haven't been able to see a pattern with regard to the prices going up and down, but it seems sometimes they also sell of last copies of a whole bunch of stuff cheaply (the Tarkovsky set - this one here - has gone OOP and expensive now).

Help on discography for Mosaic Flip Phillips.
king ubu replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't have my discographies with me, but I don't understand why you're asking this in the Flip Phillips thread then... it's not Flip on your version then, and there's no Tjader on the Esposito session with Flip (or the whole Flip Mosaic)... your basic question was to try and find out if your single version is the one with Flip from the Mosaic, I gather? And who's Claude Gilroy? Never even heard his name! Just found your old thread which has prompted this all... Fascinating! -
What mikeweil said above perfectly echoes my initial reaction to reading your opening post. I wish you all the best, Shawn! And I hope you'll get things settled and will be back very soon!

Of course not... I was just kind of bemused by Sangrey's (and some others) posts in the thread on the new Woody Allen flick... I thought you were talking about "art", not Woody Allen movies. don't hack on a non-native's choice of words, please... i meant arts, culture, music, literature, painting, religion, whatever... Not hacking on you, just at Woody Allen movies. Ok, but his films are part of what may be called "cultural practises" or some such... and I guess those could be looked at as escapist in general... or as evolutionary sensible (same with religion, btw)... either way, I'm on the run (gotta watch a commie film about Cuba... escaping from drab daily life )

I know - and would prefer that, too!
