  1. Agree on "Amandla"! I mentioned it several times, I think: that was the first Miles I ever heard... my mom had (still has) the CD and enjoyed it a lot when I came out. I fell in love with it, must have been 10 years or something back then. Took me a while, "Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" was the one I really *got* when I was 13 or 14. From then on, I was on a journey of discovery that hasn't ended since... and "Amandla" is an album I still enjoy! Haven't done a track-by-track comparison yet, but the blurb says it's just four cuts that are previously unissued. What's the stuff on disc five, then? Not sure I have any of it besides the Horn track (and there I agree with you as well, the album's mighty fine, that track's merely ok). And again: if anyone can find those posts about the scrapped box that was planned some years ago, please post a link or quote them over here! Thanks!

You Won't Forget Me - Shirley Horn Can someone please point me to the thread/posts where more information about the previously planned but scrapped Warner box were posted? Can't seem to find it right now. As it is, this box doesn't hold much interest to me... I have all the albums except for the "Dingo" one, but including the mighty good Shirley Horn album. The best of the Warners is "Tutu", would have enjoyed more live material though, but then I have the Montreux box for that... and as for "Tutu" I just played the Deluxe edition for the first time yesterday... it had been lying around for several weeks now. No revelation or anything, but it's still a fine album that I enjoy playing now and then.
  3. I went with amazon.fr - took them quite a while, too...
  4. finally got mine today - spinning now, sounds very relaxed, low-key... more like an informal session at the Open Door than a real studio session intended for release as a whole album... but I guess that atmosphere is a big part of Fruscella's fascination, it's all over his few recordings.
  5. Happy Birthday, Chris!
  6. On the rock side (besides the already mentioned Velvet Underground and Sly & The Family Stone),though it might be too obvious... Dylan & The Band (Hawks) on their 1966 tour. Also Jimi Hendrix? And definitely James Brown! (when he got rid of song structures and re-built his music and music in general, 1964-69) The Chitinous Ensemble LP is terrific and needn't be omitted - though I have it as from 1971... it would fit in better with the suggested 1967-72 time frame. The others have all been mentioned, I think... Taylor, Ornette, of course you won't miss Coltrane, Miles and Mingus? Lyons, Harriott... Wilen, Mangelsdorff, Brötzmann... what about Mengelberg and Bennink? And how about Fela Kuti? (and Tony Allen)
  7. Happy Birthday!
  8. Or they were backed by other expats who were neglected in the US... (post-rectum?)
  9. I don't understand what this means. I see they've included all the alternates but they've done that before. Why would this opportunity not exist in the future? Because someone might reclaim some rights, some douchebags might extend copyright laws, Mosaic (or the world at large) might go under... make your pick Let me put it another way: What does "it was imperative we issue them in complete form" mean? That they're using all takes? What is a full performance? Of course I don't know what it means... but I tend to understand it in a way that these lacquer discs may contain some in-between-takes banter or false starts and some such? Anyway, this box looks terrific and even though I probably have much of the music in some form, I'll be very happy to get it, eventually!
  10. He was captured there, too... with Lockjaw, Walton, Buster Williams and drummer James Black.
  11. Dexter and Stitt appeared in Rotterdam on June 20, 1976 (piano and bass were Rein de Graaff and Henk Haverhoek)... that's what my info says. An hour or so of it was on radio.
  12. I don't understand what this means. I see they've included all the alternates but they've done that before. Why would this opportunity not exist in the future? 13. So did I think... don't have the set, but would love to get it... much (or all?) of it can be pieced together with the individual Capitol CDs that came out some years back, though. Btw, FFA: I recently heard you play on that Francine Griffin disc on Delmark - 's nice!
  14. I open all the CDs immediately, remove all stickers etc... do I play them all right away? Not really...
  15. I think I have enough Brubeck, but if the price is right... The Lady Day re-package has been out for a while - or is that another one? Or new to the US?
  16. Not good enough for the hipster police - try harder!
  17. Do I smell a job for Mosaic there?
  18. I'd love to hear that Argo w/Joe Newman! But there's another Argo (721) that I'm spinning now: Novelty stuff, fer sure - but good fun! The band behind Budd's tenor is: Joe Venuto (mar/vib), Hank Jones (p), Everett Barksdale & Kenny Burrell (g), Milt Hinton (b), Osie Johnson (d), Willie Rodriguez (d). The tracklist includes the theme from "Touchez pas au grisbi", "Under Paris Skies", and more similar fare... lovely!
  19. It is! #7/8 of the OJCCD. Bruyninckx doesn't list those cuts though... it' a mess. I should have mentioned the CD's playing list before - here it is: 1. Body and Soul 2. 3rd Song (Silver Slipper) 3. Red Shoes 4. Be Bop Blues 5. Royal Wedding 6. Fine And Dandy 7. Stardust 8. Ratio and Proportion 9. Slits 10. Baggy Eyes 11. In a Beautiful Mood 12. Baggy's Blues 13. Suede Jacket 14. Suede Jacket (Alternate Take) 15. Lion's Roar 16. Scamper Roo 17. Relaxin' #1-8: Sonny Stitt/Milt Jackson #9-12: Milt Jackson #13-17: Russell Jacquet Hope to give it a spin over the weekend!
  20. spinning my Conn LP....
  21. Total truth partially may make sense, too.
  22. Ah well, if "to assimilate either Lester Young architecture" is the point - everybody failed, except for (on good nights), Lester. So why give a poop?
  23. Illinois Jacquet - Genius at Work! Live at the Ronnie Scott Club London smokin' hot trio w/Milt Buckner on ogun and Tony Crombie on drums mine has this cover (but no writing on top left corner and no Intercord logo on bottom left: ah, found it: this here:
  24. Same for "Bumpin'", "Movin' Wes" and the first JOS & Wes ("The Dynamic Duo").
