  1. sorry about your loss, aloc
  2. Yeah, they're okay - but sound is an issue in some cases. As for Shorty, get the JSP set covering his early years - the music is in many cases better than the latter, more formulaic RCA albums. The Mosaic covered the middle grounds there - some very good playing on it, too! Then there was "Where the Four Winds Blow", which I think followed the sessions included in the Mosaic. That one's amazing, too! Great Giuffre clarinet on many of those sessions!
  3. Made my way through Sarah Vaughan's Mercury recordings lately... right now into disc 3 of the final box. Great stuff! I love the poppy things, too - her voice is just... well, divine ;-)
  4. That's great news! (less great is that my disc of the concert with Wright is badly scratched - I was able to rip it but can't play it any longer... these nice-looking mini-lp things and plastic sleeves really aren't all that great sometimes!) Which Gwigwi? This one? Never came around buying it... looks good if the line-up is an indication! Get it. Since this is up there... I got this disc in the meantime (just a few weeks after the quoted posts) - and it's indeed very good!
  5. Is the Lacy just "wordless" or "voiceless", too? The site list's Aebi but on cello, so there's some hope...
  6. Ayler - Holy Ghost The final discs with the Saint-Vence material and the fascinating interviews... and the airport tape - wonder what had happened there? anyone knows? And what about that "Ed Sullivan" gig they act like it was scheduled to take place the next day? And wtf is Mr. Heidecker? Heineken? Wow, never seen this one. Gonna have to keep a look out for it. There's a second one that seems to pop up even less often... between the two of them you get what Sony failed to bring forth again in 2004 for the Basie centennial.
  7. That article was already mentioned in the thread about Jack Nimmitz' ABC session - Zieff was in touch with some folks back then, roughly same time frame (2007/08) (fine disc that one, btw!)
  8. the stereo version of "Dave Digs Disney" is of course part of the Legacy Edition of that album (which came out last year)
  9. Oh well, Pepl/Pirchner's was certainly not music that everyone would immediately be hooked on! The radio broadcast of Griffin's cuts off "Soft and Furry" alas. And yes, "Jean-Marie" by pianist Mathews is indeed a waltz, as far as I remember.
  10. guitar-vibes - Pepl-Pirchner? They were great! (partial?) Griffin setlist - this amounts to a 74min radio broadcast: Autumn Leaves Jean-Marie (Mathews) Sophisticated Lady Fifty-Six Soft and Furry line-up was: Johnny Griffin (ts), Ronnie Mathews (p), Ray Drummond (b), Kenny Washington (d)
  11. No, Hutcherson was booked to replace Bags in an all stars tour (w/Hank Jones, Kenny Burrell, Ray Brown and Mickey Roker) and was visibly bored and uninterested in what the others were playing (Jones and Burrell were great though). But back to Tyner... saw him last year in quartet w/Bartz - and both of them were great!
  12. Ah well, I remember having seen Hutcherson and he sucked. That sucks, too...
  13. I still need to find that Spotlite LP pictured above... but in the meantime, I got the Jasmine CD containing the full two 1963 Chicago broadcsts: Coleman Hawkins Live from the London House Chicago, Ill (Jasmine JASMCD 2521) Spinning it right now and Hawk is in fine shape!
  14. Happy Birthday, Tom!
  15. well, Maggie could return...
  16. See post #339 for contents! Or here, larger and straight from the source: Put in pre-orders for all of them!
  17. I'm holding out for a total collapse of the Euro. Ha... just consider the pound may join in on the downward slope
  18. first sighting of the next batch on amazon: http://www.amazon.fr/Don-pullen-albums-originaux-remasterises/dp/B0065HDMA2/ http://www.amazon.fr/Mal-waldron-quintets-albums-originaux/dp/B0065HDLJE/ http://www.amazon.fr/Jimmy-giuffre-albums-originaux-remasterises/dp/B0065HDLYO/ http://www.amazon.fr/Albums-Originaux-World-Saxophone-Quartet/dp/B006BHP30S/ prices even seem a bit lower than usual...
  19. Got to check my Murray set, too - as I've had half of it before, I was in no hurry to listen yet... thanks!

    Tony Fruscella

Thanks - forgot to look there... DUH!
  21. "Hot Buttered Noodling"? That goes straight to the favorite album titles list, along with "Never Pat a Burning Dog" (as if we didn't know THAT!)
  22. Got the Stuff Smith (glorious!) in time... also the two wonderful VeeJays!
  23. I'd rather see the Basie Roulette Studio or the Commodores make such a zombie reappearance Fabulous set, of course, the Bix/Tram/Tea - carpe diem!
  24. The weird Select? It's a nice gesture and I might buy it in the end, but it's really not necessary... there'd have been better groups of work in Lucky's discography to present in a Mosaic box! The news on the Hawkins is great, of course! The more I hear and read about it, the more I want it! Wasn't entirely sure in the beginning, but the more additional tracks they find, the more exciting it gets!
  25. Happy Birthday!
