So the boxes DO contain DIFFERENT remasterings compared to the Originals? This is getting to be confusing... as for the design: indeed some of the "Originals" digipack-reissues of (especially) Impulse albums do look splendid, while the jewel case packed discs in box Vol. 4 don't look nearly as nice.

Yeah well, there's lots of money in it... so legalize all dope/ing and see what goes. Let them gladiators kill themselves in the arena!

I guess it's all "Originals" nowadays - unless you go the Japan route. I also think (but am not sure) I've seen some single discs in store from the more recent boxes - jewel case packed originals. Boxes #1-3 were Originals, too, yes? Just done by Universal instead of their boutique-outlet Hip-O, and packed in digipacks, correct? Haven't really followed all of this too closely as I've got my Trane... wouldn't mind buying box #5 if they ever fix it.

Bob Wills Legends of Country Music 4-CD boxed set
king ubu replied to Edward's topic in Recommendations
Honestly, I'd never have bought any Bob Wills if not for these offers (got each of them for under 10€, would have payed twice as much or more, as well). Anyway, for the time being, I guess Wills' final album ("For the Last Time") is next up on the shopping list, and that will leave me covered at least for some time. -
I don't seem to understand the question... I recently got box #4 and the packing is the very same as the "horrible" Originals (which design-wise are okay with me). So broken up boxes or originals will look the same. The only difference is they come in jewel cases (originals are digipacks, I know, but early on in yurp they came in jewel cases, too). The discs stacked in the cardboard box of Vol. 4 even say "Originals" inside the traycard (visible because of clear trays being used).

Bob Wills Legends of Country Music 4-CD boxed set

Since a quick search on Amazon didn't yield too many details, just a quick question regarding the SECOND (1940-47) of your JSP sets: Does this also included cloumbia/Okeh STUDIO recordings only (making them redundant with the Bear Family box set which includes a total of some 257 tracks from Bob Wills' Columbia/Okeh studio years)? Or are there other sources (transcriptions etc.) that have been incorporated into this second set? Tracklists are all that's around, I think... haven't yet started with Vol. 2, but here's the dates given for the 1940-47 sessions: Vol. 1 CD4 ends with eight tracks from Saginaw, TX - 1940-04-15 Then the 1940-47 set contains: CD1: Saginaw, TX - 1940-04-15 (ctd, 3 tracks) Saginaw, TX - 1940-04-16 (3) Fort Worth, TX - 1941-02-24 (3) Fort Worth, TX - 1941-02-25 (3) Fort Worth, TX - 1941-02-26 (2) Hollywood, CA - 1941-07-23 (5) Hollywood, CA - 1941-07-24 (5 + prob. #1 from disc 2, "My Life's Been a Pleasure" - copy/paste mistake in booklet there) CD2: Hollywood, CA - 1942-07-14 (5) Hollywood, CA - 1942-07-15 (5) Hollywood, CA - 1942-07-16 (2) Hollywood, CA - 1945-01-26 (6) Hollywood, CA - 1945-01-28 (2) Hollywood, CA - 1945-04-20 (3) Hollywood, CA - 1945-10-03 (1) CD3: Hollywood, CA - 1945-10-03 (ctd.) (3) Hollywood, CA - 1946-09-04 (3) Hollywood, CA - 1946-09-05 (5) Hollywood, CA - 1946-09-06 (4) Chicago, IL - 1947-10-15 (6) Chicago, IL - 1947-10-16 (4) CD4: Chicago, IL - 1947-10-16 (ctd) (2) Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA - 1947-10-30 (10) Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA - 1947-10-31 (5) Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA - 1947-11-10 (4) Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA - 1947-11-12 (4) Tracklist can be found here: http://www.allmusic.com/album/texas-hollywood-and-chicago-1940-1947-r2141389 Not sure if this helps... haven't checked the booklets about any label information... -

Bumping this up... got both of Wills' JSP sets cheaply this weekend (covering 1935-1940 and 1940-1947, respectively), enjyoing the first one now! Lengthy write-up on Wills here: http://www.rousefamily.com/rock_roots/?p=3652 -

Yeah, that's it - Picadilly Circus it was! They had quite a stunning selection back then! -

I don't even remember where that store was... very central for sure, jazz wasn't on ground floor but somewhere further up... the most amazing thing for me was that they had 4-10 copies of each disc, even of such rarer things as VEEs! I'd never seen that before (nor have I since... except for some stores specialising on having some numbers of ECMs or whatever in stock and displayed in a speceial place). -

I still remember finding the Quinichette VEE (also the RVG of "A Fickle Sonance" and two or three other goodies) while on vacation in Poland in October... 2000 - it was the weeks in which Milosevic fell, to be replaced by douchebag-salon-nationalist Kostunica. The Dinah W. and Lalo S. I bought from a board member for quite hefty prices, but those were the days. I was in London in spring 2001 (I think) and one of the big stores (HMV?) had lots of VEEs, but they cost around 20£ and the £ was worth quite something back then! I preferred buying tons of books, instead - but I did get a few goodies (I think I got "Cosmic Music" then, not sure though). -
Les McCann Ltd. in New York was reissued in the same Japanese series as the Jazz Waltz album by Les and the Crusaders - both are very good, indeed!

Bumping this up... got the two World's Greatest Jazz Concert discs recently (two different concerts recorded in 1947). Of course the title of the discs is pure hyperbole, but there's some fine music on both. What else would you expect with all those involved: Wild Bill Davison, Muggsy Spanier, George Brunies, Albert Nicholas, Joe Sullivan, Art Hodes, Pops Foster, Baby Dodds, Bertha "Chippie" Hill, Hot Lips Page, Danny Barker a.o. (#1), and Muggsy Spanier, Johnny Windhurst, Sidney Bechet, Bob Wilber, Jack Teagarden, George Brunies, Dick Wellstood, Baby Dodds a.o. (#2). But gee, what happens on "Basin Street Blues"? Teagarden is leading off, and Johnny Windhurst is trying to find his place more or less successfully (and contributing a good solo later), but the rhythm section... what the hell are they doing? (It's Hank Duncan-p, Cyrus St. Clair-tuba and Ed Phife-d) - they seem ride on a different train/beat or be in another, non-adjacent room!
-
Yes indeed. Chico Hamilton, too! I guess if these are indeed selling as well as seems to be the case, as our beloved voice of dissent has said, they'll just keep putting out their catalogue in this form. Suits me well as I only have a couple of dozen or so items yet... (I dimly remember some Soul Note/Black Saint discussion in the huge funny rat-thread some years back - but I've never really followed all the recommmendations from there).

Missed how this ended... what happened with the Stitt? I got one with a damaged booklet (the front page cut off, instead the beginning of the liners are glued in on a b/w photocopied piece of paper - good enough for me, but hey...) -
So he gots paid for what? Doing nothing? Seems that even the annoying Wynetone and NoJo street team emails have stopped dropping in every other month... would wish it were different and we'd see some good reissues and some new productions that could actually be dubbed "jazz" (or #BAM or whatever).

Wasn't the 'Quintessence' session on the Quincy Jones previously issued on CD domestically? A Yusef Lateef Impulse box would be an absolute killer of a set. Top of my list ! True indeed! Forgot about that one! But I guess Hip-O would object (and send an MP3 in place).

and create an additional slot somewhere in the oh-so-boutique package (hey, I like them alright!) to store the actual cd... or throw that into a garbage can (maybe the one on which's bottom someone once composed "ce soir en Tunisie")

Got to really check out Lloyd Miller... there's a Jef Gilson connection which makes for some intriguing music, such as this: Also, welcome to this site, hope you'll stick around, have recently found your blog and since been enjoying it a lot!

Yes, good idea indeed!
