Starting this thread for a friend who currently spends lots of time working in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area... he mentioned not having seen anything much about jazz, so I volunteered to milk the Tejas community here a bit and let him have some directions... Are there any clubs, shops, whatever that he should check out? Any upcoming special events?

No idea how much shipping from amazon.fr is (amazon.com has just recently stopped delivering to Switzerland entirely... at least as far as CDs are concerned... no idea why, maybe Obama will attack us next week?), but they do have them all for very good prices. As for the Crolla "hors série" - I think it's charming! But then I love many things coming from France, including plenty of films etc...

Signed: A not-so-krazy-kollektorrr Oh well, I'm not THAT krazy either... miss a few of the original run, did - contrary to what's been stated by that other krazy kollektor above - not get any of the collector's releases unless they had additional music on them (or were entirely new to the series... no need for the Chet though, as I did after much, um krazy soul searching, jump for the wonderful Barclay box)... but I do have most of the original discs (I think Miles, Pres and Roach are missing, got them in other form or as part of boxes), all the hors série (save for #9-11, will get those soon, too, though), and after some searching I finally did get the 10" LP and the 12CD deluxe box, too... plenty of money spent on those two, but hey, the box still was around 10€ per disc or less, so it's not THAT much, and presentation is marvellous! I have the "Piano à la Mood" (the one with the poodle jumping the fence on the cover) LP. It is nice but rather ... well ... mood-ish tinkling indeed. Not the most out-and-out hardcore jazz LP ever. Not sure if it is that essential on the reissue market. Well, if they throw it in with some other stuff, it should be nice enough. There's some other not-so-jazz stuff in the JiP series (the Crolla 2CD set for one). Anyway, I'm just crazy about crazy Peiffer and I'll get all that I can find!

Flurin I presume that's the Black Lion session (Jan 65) It's been rereleased on the budget Jazz Colours label (subsidiary of Black Lion?) 2CD's worth (approx 20 titles) - had these on my wants list for a while Yes, Jan 30 & 31 (partly recorded after midnight). Also have one of the LPs, which I got as a freeby many years back... wonderful music! Jazz Coulours often does partial reissues of several LPs on one CD - sucks! But in some cases, they're straight re-issues of re-issues and hence alright (I've got the two Griffin discs and the fantastic Dudu Pukwana, but Webster I've got on Black Lion).

Yeah, it's really just a reissue of two previous Jazz Unlimited (hence Storyville) discs: Miscellaneous Miles 1955-1957 Live in Zurich 1960 Got both of these, needless to say they're good. The Misc disc has the entire Newport "comeback" set (the famed "Round Midnight" was also released in the meantime by Sony/Legacy on the Legacy Edition of "Round About Midnight"), two rare tracks of the junkie-less band when Bobby Jaspar held the sax chair (while Coltrane, Red and Philly were out)... the Zurich set is somewhat more mellow than the Paris and Stockholm concerts of the same tour, and I think that makes it so enjoyable (although it's a bit less good than those, I think... I just love the super-charged atmosphere of the Paris set).

Yeah, it's a safe bet for anyone who likes late Ben, that's for sure!

What you absolutely need are the wonderful live recordings from one long night at the Jazzhus Montmartre, "Stormy Weather" and "Gone with the Wind" (initially spread on three LPs). Pure magic! And goosebumps galore... and the gruff, stomping swing... I love it when Ben spits out those seemingly incoherent phrases - there's so much drive in there, it always gets me! And when he follows up with a ballad, well... The Storyville box is nice, but kind of a mixed bag. Lots of short sessions, some just one or two tracks, but also some brilliant stuff, from Copenhagen, from London (a while disc with Stan Tracey's trio at Ronnie Scott's - also available separately of course)... The Holland sessions are very good (BN 2CD set, long OOP I guess) as far as late Webster goes. The Storyville box must have ben discussed somewhere, but it seems not in its own thread.

So it's definitive that I'm NOT going to see CT in November - big bummer. Concert in Schorndrof cancelled without reason (well, maybe it was never actually planned, just made up by the booking guy? He did the same last year with CT in Mannheim, but this time it was on the club's website, I had tickets reserved, but luckily not yet paid). Big bummer. Did I say big bummer already? Mighty fat big bummer!

So, for the record, the Peiffer holds nearly as much prev. unissued live music as the two albums count for: CD1 #11-14: Live at the Cherry Hill Inn (BP-p,elp; Al Stauffer-b; Jimmy Paxson-d) CD2 #7: NPR radio (BP-p; ASt-b; Billy Jones-d) CD2 #8-10: Live from Glassboro State University (BP-p, ASt-b) There's some more Peiffer still in the can (speaking of CD reissues, that is), in addition to the second Laurie album (which is titled "Bernard Peiffer plays Cole Porters Can-Can"): "Presenting the BP Trio" and "Piano à la Mood" (Decca, 1957 and 1958, respectively), "Prelude, Fugue & Trio" (Polydor 1965) Here's hope for more Peiffer hors série sets! Make it two of them and fill them up with more live music, pu-llleeeeeeze!

Nah, I ended up buying only those with additional music or completely new (Jazz Boom N°1, Nathan Davis, Eddy Louiss, Quincy Jones, the JATP, Art Simmons). But I did get the Peiffer and Rhoda Scott sets today! Looking forward to listening to them! And the Pres/Basie disco is on the way!

Is Harris' "Vicissitudes" worth getting? Had them put the LP aside for me, seems it's in pretty good shape, cover too (though it'll need some gluing back together). Here's a large scan of the backcover, with the credits and all clearly visible.

Hey Ubu! What's the exact date? Maybe we can meet there. Tues. May 29 I'll meet someone from France who might be the biggest ZA jazz fan I've yet gotten in touch with... but would be very cool if you'd be there, too! I'll catch the latest train back to Zurich, but I might be there somewhat earlier, not sure yet (and not sure what the other guy's exact plans are, either).

Will hopefully make it to the Bird's Eye for Marcus Wyatt's Blue Notes Tribute (second week).

Whatever happened to James Newton? Listened to some of their stuff early on... Check Yo Head was the one I enjoyed bost most and most often. Gee, the guy was my age... r.i.p.
