  1. So Allen has a fishy project going on... how many pneumatic secretaries involved? Seriousy, this sounds as if all the ingredientes for another great project are there, looking forward very much to hearing the result, Allen!
  2. Sheesh, the OP says in his topic title that he is regarding the Rodney King thread, so where the fegh is the problem? This thread here is really superfluous. Props to our volunteering mods from my side - they're doing a fine job, time to acknowledge that once in a while - and now everybody move on, there's nothing to see here.
  3. Guess we ought to leave some sort of instructiones (but then I hope I've got a while before that get's to be important).
  4. The Patti Smith is good! But I need to give it some more time to come to a valid judgement, only gave it two spins so far (got the book edition with photos from the JLG filming on ... "Costa Concordia", of all ocean crappers - it also has one more tune, I think)
  5. Go for British amazon then: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ligeti-Project-5cd-Box/dp/B0016A8E1K?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=galenicom-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016A8E1K Everybody here knows about appropriately titled Pricenoia service allowing to compare prices at various amazons, right: http://pricenoia.com/ligeti-project ? They got charts too! Thanks! Didn't catch it there! Do you know the Wergo 3CD set, too? I think those were the recordings I copied to K7 in the 90s, while in high school - haven't heard them since though.
  6. The Lumières just went up to 20£ - fegh. Still a great deal, I guess. The Ligeti Project went up by factor 3 on amazon.it. Won't order it then. Too bad!
  7. Great, Allen! Good luck with your project!
  8. Thank for keeping us posted, brownie, much appreciated!
  9. Okay, thanks! I've got the Chief and Bomba editions of the Russell albums - guess I'll get the new editions, too!
  10. Great photo, Chuck! Thanks for sharing - love Hal Russell! Any insights into those reissues you're working on?
  11. I had no idea who Bernie Brightman was, but your post made me laugh so much I could not resist a quick search. And I see he was responsible for 'Reefer Songs'. A classic LP in many a young persons jazz journey I suspect. And he never paid royalties - alledgedly BTW I wish Bob Porter would post here. I have really enjoyed his recollections on many re-issue liner notes he has written. I remember reading he was going to write a book, but I suppose it never eventuated. I keep meaning to check out his radio show over the net, but keep forgetting. I think I met Bob Porter in the mid '70s - maybe earlier. He hated the music I recorded (really hated) and was not an admirer of Von Freeman (he later bragged to me about all the edits he made to the Willis Jackson/Von Freeman date issued on Muse). In spite of this we became friends and probably ate/drank together around 3 times a year for quite a while. I even stayed in his basement for a night or two. Bob is a great guy who believes Roscoe, Lester, Braxton and more of my friends are a sign of the end of the world. Bob has a large, resonant voice as you might be able to tell from his radio shows. At one of these indie conventions he saw me across the hotel lobby and shouted "Nessa! After recording all the shit you put out, how could you make the record of the year!! The Warne Marsh is a Mother Fucker!!" Bob also wrote the notes for my Lucky Thompson release. I wish we lived closer together so we could have an occasional beer or two. Many thanks for sharing that photo, Chuck! Very nice indeed! Those sentences about Bob Porter just made me laugh hard! Just as hard as Allen's post on Brightman
  12. Thanks! I only (slightly) know his tenth (taped the world premiere off the radio, I guess it must be released in some version by now). Haven't yet ordered too much more, got to give my wallet a rest every now and then
  13. You've certainly got a point there! The Proper is the one depicted in post #2 I thought? Don't have it myself. The Live Basie material on the disc brownie mentions is fine - a very good compilation from a series that's usually directed at newbies or casual listeners, but that one's a great release! Another one:
  14. I am not that much into Chopin. I like Scriabin, though, and for Scriabin you have to go to Sofronitsky recordings. I know, that's why I mentioned this particular 2CD set - it's absolutely wonderful! Sparse, tough, sharp-minded. That's how it seems to me, at least. As for Scriabin, Olli Mustonen has just released a new disc which got a rather interesting write-up in german FAZ on saturday - guess I'll want to hear that one, eventually. I see there's a 9CD and a 3CD set by Sofronitsky on Brilliant Classics - do they overlap? Are they recommended?
  15. Seems the compiltion is lacking in various ways and the ICON box may be a smarter choice - but hard to resist at this price: Fritz Wunderlich - Der unvergessene Fritz Wunderlich (EUR 34,99 at JPC)
  16. some previous threads (focussing way too strongly on the circumstances of Gray's useless and premature death, alas): more general ones: various others ones: and a recent one: Much too little discussion of Gray's music, indeed!
  17. I've heard a pair of tracks - very interesting, to say the least. Not sure how well I can deal with Neneh's voice, though.
  18. Yes, and the uhm, decency of their masterings is really not that great either. The only thing they did improve over the past years is presentation. Their releases actually do look pretty nice nowadays - but then as with other such labels (those that do the flimsy boxes with cardboard sleeves and nice-looking booklets, Quincy in Europe 1960, Stitt/Harris, Garland/Chambers/Taylor, Mingus Birdland, Taylor Hentoff etc) they're a point in case for style over substance all too often.
  19. Same here, my card may then not reach - unless they will pass them on, which in my world would be the regular thing to do, but my world isn't hospital world.
  20. Yeah, recently got the LHR & Williams from Japan - it's amazing! The album with Jones/Lewis is another very fine one. I'm not too fond of that twofer though - got to dig it out, it's been a while, might be time to refresh. That album with Cannonball sure looks interesting!
  21. For Ligeti you might want to go for the cheapo box on Teldec (http://www.amazon.it/The-Ligeti-Project-Various-Composers/dp/B0016A8E1K?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=pricenoia-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016A8E1K ) You most definitely do BUT you still need the second quartet either in the Artemis (EMI) or the Arditti (Sony) version. WHOAH! Thanks! Seems the number of classical bargains these days is really endless! You know, one of the reasons why I never yet more than dabbled with classical music is that in Switzerland, many single classical CDs cost easily 30€ - single discs, okay? Of course you can hang out in stores and then order online, but stil ... As for the string quartets ... what's wrong with the LaSalle version on the DG disc here: http://www.amazon.de/Kammerkonzert-Ramifications-Aventures-Streichquartett-aeterna/dp/B00000E3YZ/ ? Just asking - as the Artemis versions are of course easy to find, too ... (Arditti seems to be more difficult though).
  22. Arrau with Chopin's "Nocturnes" (do you know them, D.D.? Available on a 2CD set from Decca, absolutely recommended!) Gulda with Bach's WTK The two Soviet Avant-Garde discs mentioned by D.D. above (particularly the Lourié pieces - I need more there!) Schleiermacher with Morton Feldman (Early Piano Music, another hat[now]ART disc I love!) I've lately also enjoyed Ashkenazy doing Rachmaninovs "Preludes" (got his Decca 2CD set with the piano concertos as well now). Not sure I'd rate them as favorites.
  23. Thanks again, guys! The Box is darn cheap and might give me more directions - I'll consider it! The Glazunov disc (with Milstein and Rostropovich) looks nice! So do the Enescu, the Ligeti and several others!
  24. Ahhhh... needle drops! Although the music on this 2xCD set is uniformly excellent I'm afraid that all the tracks on CD 1 from the albums "South Side Soul" & "Nice 'n' Tasty" both show up on my CD analyzer as being from mp3 sources. So...... "Buyer Beware"! I've seen that with Membran and with Definitive ... rarely ever did bother check. What does annoy me about Fresh Sound is that they usually cost quite a bit, and then there's Mr. Angel doing his double-talk on top of that. You should write him and ask him to make a statement on that finding of yours! I wonder if many Fresh Sound releases are MP3-sourced! (I don't wonder w/Definitive, they sound like crap, crap they are - same with Membran.)
