It took me two hours to get that one darn Getz chorus written down (from the CD, so no slowing down). That part where he goes way up, hitting about the hightest notes possible on the tenor, and some some quick flurry of notes, I never got that down ... but even for a lacking amateur like me, it was a good exercice! -
As I am a huge supporter of Mosaic, I was NOT holding it against them. I've had this discussion many times with Scott. The legal difficulties involved in a such a scenario make doing this almost impossible, especially in this day and age. This could change (or become even more difficult) if UMG (owner of Decca) becomes the owner of EMI (owner of Blue Note, which as I understand it, is part owner of Mosaic itself). It's a shame really that Mosaic does not have at its disposal the legal team necessary to resolve such issues for the good of the music. But then again, it's rarely about the music with large record companies these days. Okay, we're on the same page then ... as for UMG swallowing EMI (which, as far as I know, owns 50% of Mosaic), that might be the very end, as UMG has it's own boutique outlet with Hip-O-Select. If their jazz arm would be merged with Mosaic, that might indeed turn out fine. I assume Hip-O getting more active in jazz was the reason why Mosaic couldn't/wouldn't do any more Universal/Verve boxes (remember that the Granz Jam Sessions set was once planned to be a Mosaic?). Anyway, rather than buying Mosaic, UMG should bring out a fifties JATP box set!

Great photos! I guess me, I've long been inhabited by the jazz devil - but no one will ever mistake me for a German submarine officer, I'm quite sure

Well, we really needn't go into detail, but sometimes it was very hard back then to draw a line between extreme conservatism and nazism, wasn't it? But I was just being somewhat pushy As my Swedish is inexistant, I don't seem to find anything useful about that book right now. But back on topic: why not try and get in touch with those folks and ask them, and if needed, provide some material on the Swedish leg of the tour?

Well, you insinuated that Mosaic intentionally don't mix recordings from more than one major label, as if it was their choice. I guess there's plenty of difficulties in there and I know others have complained here about the fact that most of the time it seems to be impossible to gather recordings from more than one major under one roof - but I really wouldn't want to hold that against Mosaic (which again, is how I understood your post).

Okay, I guess I'll remain grounded, then (I did learn some Cannonball solos once though ... but not from my transcriptions though I do have all the recordings in question ... and, and once I did transcribe a Getz solo, but a short and sweet one, "Insensatez" from "Jazz Bossa Encore", still my favorite of the Getz bossa albums). -
I looked this up too. He also recorded 6 tracks for Decca in 1935 if i'm not mistaken. Does Mosaic ever do combined Universal(Decca) and Sony/BMG sets? They try not to. Gee, grow up!

I know, I know - I enjoy me quite some Phil Woods, was just joking! But I do love that story, I've read it before! -
'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)

For Hartmann ... not Metzmacher then. How about the Wergo set: http://www.wergo.de/shop/de_DE/3/show,93484.html -
And speaking of Nazis, the newspaper clippings are absolutely intriguing ... the mix of naïvete and plain racism, of helplessness and malignity, is quite something!
-
Intriguing! (But why would there be a restaurant Munich in Copenhagen in 1946 and why would this place - a place that, sorry, sounds lots like nazi in 1946 - have negros playing jazz? Rather weird ... anyone knows the story of that restaurant?)
-
Yeah, with respect to spelling, the Limelight is best. My first CD used that cover, later on I got the VME with the original Mercury cover.

That sounds quite amazing, Chuck! Wish I had such memories!

Isn't "I was young and stupid" the opening line of the lyric on "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love." No, wait, it's "I was young and carefree."

No, he's cleaned up. So who did the sanitized version? Phil "cap'n" Woods? -
Many thanks for that history lessen Mike - most interesting!

Yeah, I've heard that before (got Gould's last six - very good ... they'd be on a hammerklavier if performed by HIP-sters, I assume?). Will have to give this some thought, but I'll get her well-tempered cembalo, I think. (can a cembalo actually be well-tempered?)
-
quick off-topic question: what would she actually play on that Haydn box? 't says "period instruments", but ignunt me doesn't know what that means with respect to Haydn, sorry.
-
Will do!

Great news about Carter/Bradford and Tapscott, Jonathan! And please do go for the box with Daley!

Based on this thread I got this one: Gave it three spins so far ... it's somewhat dark in general mood, I found at first, but it's slowly growing on me. Also got Horowitz' "Great Sonatas" 10CD box, which has an overall 32 Scarlatti sonatas - great as well, if you want some piano! But I guess I'll look for more Hantaï now ... and if I stuble over it, the Weissenberg LP.

Two long sets, first over fifty minutes, second something over half an hour ... definitely great to see an official release of this! Pi is my kind of label!
