Yes, that's a difference, of course! But you know, I spent the week before last and will spend the next one on work in Luxembourg, and there I'm amazed at how many languages they talk. They learn French and German from the git-go in school, it seems, have their own (very weird) native language (which sounds to me like a wild mix of French, German and what I assume to be Dutch/Flemish), everybody of course speaks English, but many are also fluent in one or two more languages, it seems. Quite amazing even for continental Europeans! But back on topic: what I often regret with those classical liners is that in many cases they only deal with the works (like what Mozart wrote to his father in his letters while he stood someplace during the time he composed or first performed said concerto), and don't contain any reference to the interpretation/recording in question. That's different, say, with the EMI ICON boxes since those focus on the performing artist and not on works, but with plenty of single discs, it's all about works and not a word about musicians and their approaches to same.

Both good news to me, though I'm also more in favour of the Motian set, if it then happens. I have the first three on LP or CD and they're very good (well, "Conception Vessel" is rather okay to good than very good, but Charles Brackeen and David Izenzon are effin' Charles Brackeen and David Izenzon, dig?). Having Ethan Iverson write liners is a fine idea - his write-up on Motian was most enlightening, I found!

Nice one ... will try and give it a few spins now that you kindly remind me of it in time up! - anyone?

Different in each language. Yeah - it's particular frustrating when the German or French notes are much longer than the English and seem more detailed and interesting. And in the worst cases are when the notes in a language I don't speak have examples with musical notation, and the English notes don't. Damn Tower of Babel! I actually enjoy that a lot - being able to read French rather easily, in addition to German and English, and - if necessary - able to read some Spanish and also able to get the gist out of Italian notes, just going from my high school Latin and the other languages I'm more or less familiar with. Hence I find the opposite frustrating: why include three or even four or five versions of the same notes (in ofter lacklustre translations) at all? But then on the other hand, the new Glenn Could Edition (or is it Collection?) has notes in English only, but written by a German guy - that I find very silly (but in the end acceptable as it's clearly a cheapo series and other than some crappy minor layout gaffes, the presentation is very nicely done). As for length: you'll often note considerable differences even if there's just one text in English, German and French. English a most economic language by comparison, a four page English text usually needs almost a page more in German and French (sometimes even more in French, I think, but differences aren't that big there, usually). So a longer German text might only seem longer, if you look at it like that. Not that it really matters, though. As for my pets, I'm not sure what their likes and dislikes in classical music are, but they're surely not driven away if I play free jazz loudly.

in case anyone wonders why I'm posting this: seems the box was pulled by the heirs or some such, price for new copies (if available at all) are high, and the music is excellent ... carpe diem!

Let me repeat this here - I'm not the seller, but if anyone's interested, let me know today (I'll be at the office for around 6 hours from now and could drop by the shop on the way home, afterwards, it'll be in two weeks time and obviously I can't guarantee the box is still there ... can't do so for tonight either, but the odds are good): If anyone is still looking for "Singular Genius" and prepared to pay 60 Swiss Franks (64 US$ or 50€) plus shipping*, let me know by writing a PM tonight or tomorrow (by latest at noon US time) and I'll grab the copy that's at the shop where I got mine! *) shipping estimate ... just weighed mine plus some old amazon box and it's around 500 grams, which makes a big price difference, I'm afraid - rates are: to 500 g / Europe: CHF 15.50 (economy) or 20 (priority) / overseas: CHF 18 (eco) or 26 (prio) over 500 g / Europe: CHF 18.50 (eco) or 26 (prio) / overseas: CHF 24 (eco) or 36 (prio) I can do my best to pack it that it's below 500g but can't really promise anything ... but I guess it gets to expensive for US anyway. And in my experience economy shipping within Europe is fine (takes ca. 2 weeks usually) - I'm quite sure these rates are up to date. Compared to the few new copies up on amazon, that's quite okay a price, I think (not sure it will be sealed, CDs often aren'tt over here, but I can of course check and get it only in case it's in perfect shape - I will not guarantee that it arrives in such, though, but I will do my best to pack it nicely, though that will probably mean it goes over 500g., adding some bubbly stuff etc.). I'd take a Mosaic or amazon gift certificate in ways of payment. So, if anyone's interested, let me know! (can make it to that shop tomorrow, if not, only in two weeks again - but I guess chances are that it will still be there by then - not sure where they got another one from anyway)

I went through the ordering process with a fake Credit card # just so I wouldn't get charged before I saw the shipping charge. $15.00 to Canada; too high, nearly doubles the cost. Will wait for a better deal. I suspect it will be even higher to Europe and elsewhere. Tried the same but was told to enter a valid credit card # ... 15$ I guess would be okay for overseas shipping, but if it gets even higher, it's kind of ridiculous, we're talking a paperback book, right?

Free jazz that is more serene than jarring

Well, any solo Derek Bailey fits the bill perfectly well for me - not just the late-career standards album "Ballads" (which is beautiful!) but also discs like "Domestic and Public Pieces" or "Aida". Also some of his duets, like the wonderful one with Joëlle Léandre on Potlatch. But then Derek Bailey isn't free jazz ... but who the hell gives a damn anyway, he was great and absolutely one of a kind. -

Has Joe Harriott been mentioned? "Free Form", "Abstract", "Southern Horizons" ... they all fit the bill for me. Some may find it quirky, though... -

as far as Coltrane goes, I think my favourite - if I understand the original poster correctly - would be "Sun Ship" - some of the starkest beauty to be heard in music (but that's purely subjective, of course) -

Elina Duni and her great little band (Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret and Norbert Pfammatter) - wonderful concert! -
Very sorry to hear, though it was expected after the recent bad news. Will play some of his music again later on.
