  1. I've not seen many, but Haneke's "Amour" was great. And I have highest hopes regarding "Elena" which just - finally! I had given up hopes! - made it to the movies here.
  2. I go by artist (performer) and then by work. But having just changed from an old ipod to an android phone with extra memory card, I'm still unsure how to work things out best. And I have no symphonic stuff on there so far, just concertos, chamber and solo piano music ... guess I'd go with composers in case of symphonies, but that would still look weird, having Mozart or Mahler in the artist listing next to Rubinstein and Rabin. It would be nice if these new devices would indeed depict all those fields you can enter tags into, and let you sort by whatever you want (my android phone doesn't even recognize all the genres, some R&B works, some is displayed as Soul/R&B, some is - with some of the classical - in a separate category called "ta", whatever that stands for. Silly new world.
  3. Oh, I have several of these ... while I did notice the US editions having different covers (see below), I somehow never arrived at realizing those other ones being German. I assume the remasterings used were identical? Nice series, all considered, the Terry being particularly good (the Gonsalves album!), the Jamal and Ramsey Lewis more than useful introductions ... also there's a great James Moody in the series (At the Jazz Workshop, some of his meanest playing to heard there!). Never saw the Herman, didn't even know of its existence!
  4. The complete Armstrong Frémeaux series wouldn't be a wrong decision, I guess ... but a bit much maybe? (Not for me, though I've only got five of the volumes out by now.)
  5. MP3toVinyl might be the solution for even higher-fi sound
  6. What are those German (or wherever from) Chess digipacks? I never saw one! Any links, scans?
  7. Great photos, thanks a lot for sharing them, David!
  8. German Chess, what's that? Remember this thread?
  9. And listen to the bass! Pops Foster is mightier and more swinging than most bassists to come for a long time (same goes for Wellman Braud and a few others).
  10. sad news ... only know very few of her poems but love those - r.i.p.
  11. Yes indeed!
  12. As for Honegger, I hope the current banknotes' replacement will be re-scheduled for another while:
  13. r.i.p.
  14. Second the Luis Russell recommendation! His music was a big part in getting me interested in 20s jazz! This one's excellent:
  15. And what about the Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer Quintet? One of the last bands Eddie Costa played with, they released four great LPs featuring magic improvised counterpoint betwixt the Flugelhorn and Valve trombone: "Quintet" "Tonight" "The Power of Positive Swinging" "Gingerbread Men" Not up there with the bands I mentioned, in my opinion (though I adore Costa - but he does turn up in less-than-great settings pretty often). Some nice music, for sure, and it does have the "power of positive swinging", but that alone is rarely enough for me
  16. I agree - but still not quite a masterpiece, I think.
  17. My choices for Rollins would be, I think: A Night at the Village Vanguard (trio) Saxophone Colossus (quartet) Sonny Rollins Plus Four (quintet) Not sure "Big Brass" is a masterpiece - honestly I don't quite think so. Neither is "Alfie", so no mid- or large-size for the list. The solo album is fascinating, but ultimately not that good either. So Rollins is to me, rather a case not fitting this thread, as he made all his best albums in trio and quartet settings. I'm not even totally sure I'd really nominate "Plus Four" as a masterpiece. It's mighty good, but Rollins was on better quintet albums as a sideman - with Monk and Roach - than he made any as a leader.
  18. Incidentally, it's the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2013. There should be enough box sets out to build your own Valhalla (or at least obscure a beautiful goddess). There is already this one: http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Complete-Operas-Limited-Edition/dp/B00980IA3M/ It's out over here, and much cheaper: http://www.amazon.de/Wagner-Complete-Operas-Limited-Edition/dp/B00980IA3M/
  19. That's a great interview, just re-read it yesterday!
  20. Oh, didn't think they'd have it ... amazon.fr is a bit cheaper at this time: http://www.amazon.fr/Dameronia-Life-Music-Dameron-Perspectives/dp/0472114131/ Guess I'll order it soon, then!
  21. A rather hefty price tag ... but as a big admirer of Tadd's music, I'll have to get hold of this, eventually!
  22. Didn't it turn on Dec. 21st?
  23. the Ming: Mingus Plays Piano Money Jungle Mingus Presents Mingus Mingus Ah Um Black Saint and the Sinner Lady the Monk: Solo Piano (Vogue 1954) The Thelonious Monk Trio (Prestige) Monk's Dream or Monk in Action or Live at Carnegie Hall 1957 or ... 24. Any chance you can share some of that?
  25. Congrats, Jim!
