(is a lede a lead?)

crazy! that MCPS logo was on virtually all those very cheap grocey store cashier's desk discs I saw flooding some cheaper chain stores when I was in high school ... mid/late 90s.
-
Too many negations .... licensed = okay not licensed = boot m kay?
-
But it's still illegal in the United States with its different copyright laws, and that's where this board is based And it's 70 years now in the European Union - yep, I know, Switzerland is not a member state; what do your country's copyright laws say, by the way? I think it's the same as in the EU. I was just pointing out that Storyville isn't *releasing* a bootleg. Where they operate, it's fine. In the US, it's obviously possible that it is a bootleg (that is if they didn't license it from Verve/Universal ... I'd be rather astonished to learn they did), but that doesn't per so make it one. 's all.
-
They don't have to bootleg it, it's beyond 50 years ... still have to get me a copy of the Storyville, sounds like a nice enough session!
-
Never thought of that ... still to me that's a flaw of the system. But then I guess the editions will usually be rather larger than the actual number of backers anyway, so there should be other options to get the albums. (if they're CD editions, that is, not sure in case of vinyl)
-
Too late now ... I often wondered: is there any way to get in after the time's up? Only if the discs are sold through other channels, too, later on, I guess? That's a big drawback of this system for me, as I don't have enough time to monitor all that stuff all the time...

The upcoming Nat "King" Cole/Quincy Jones release has just been in a well-hidden place, but I figured this series finally deserves its own thread, after more than thirty releases, most of which are very, very good! We've discussed some of them in various threads, most recently the Miles Davis, but also the Lionel Hamptons, the Basies, the JATP with Pres etc. etc. Cover art is bad, but the music is great! I enjoy those I've heard so far from the "Jazz Live Trio" sub-series a lot, too - these guys were technicians or something at the radio studio but jammed in their spartime, one of them being drummer Peter Schmidlin, who is the founder and head of TCB Records. Source: http://www.tcb.ch/ne...ary 2013&sort=r (News of the Nat/Quincy can be found there, too, that one's Vol. 33) Here's the entire (?) list: ALBERT MANGELSDORFF / FRANCOIS JEANNEAU ART BLAKEY'S JAZZ MESSENGERS LAUSANNE 1960 BEN WEBSTER/DEXTER GORDON BADEN 1972 BENNY GOODMAN BILL COLEMAN - DON BYAS BUCK CLAYTON ALL STARS BASEL 1961 CANNONBALL ADDERLEY SEXTET LUGANO 1963 CLARK TERRY - CHRIS WOODS QUINTET LUCERNE 1978 COLEMAN HAWKINS feat. They licensed them for the new box. That's one of the main differences between the old series and the new box. They refer to them as the BBC recordings. Hm, but I'm talking of orchestras not radio stations. Will have to dig up the big box, it's buried unter piles of discs

ESP has botched up the booklet of the Norman Howard disc already ... but I guess nothing beats my copy of Frank Wright's "Blues for Albert Ayler". The tray is glued to the wrong part of the cardboard-cover and hence the booklet is in a slot that's on the upper part of the case - falling out of course. Pretty weird thing to happen - no one has checked this before it went to the duplicator, I guess (and the duplicator was deaf, dumb and blind). But anyway, great to see ESP going on, of course!

Finally got Pagin' Mr Jelly and needless to say: I love it! Stacking up some more Hodes, I've always loved his music but never really got around to buy a lot of it. Also got "Tribute to the Greats" (Delmark), which contains more from those Euphonic sessions mentioned above ... and I'm waiting for "Buket's Got a Hole in It" and "Jazz Record Story". Guess I ought to get the second one with Albert Nicholas, too, I've had "New Orleans-Chicago Connection" for ten or so years and enjoy it a lot! Would kill to get the Mosaic box ... the music is fabulous, happy to at least be able to hear it, but nothing beats the real thing!

Those BBC SO recordings are in the big Tosci shoebox I don't think so. I looked up several of the works in the short description of the link I provided and while they're all included, they seem to be the NBC versions (I only compared with my anally-retentive list, didn't yet dig out the shoebox as you call it). The Beethoven symphonies and some overtures are included, but not all of it.

I've only listened to the first one - not sure what LP edition I got exactly, Philips for sure, but I'd have to check if I can identify its origin, I'm no expert. And neither am I an expert in this kind of classical/jazz crossover. My mom used to listen to some Play Bach stuff, but I think that was mainly because she had one CD of Louissier's at a time when my parents had around seven or eight CDs ... anyway, I guess yes, it's all rather civil and easy-going, and there is of course lots of musicality around with those involved. But still, I'm not sure I really need to hear it all that often. But one huge album I'd love to see properly reissued is "Noon in Tunisia":

There are also ICONs coming up by Brigitte Fassbaender, Boris Christoff and John McCormack. Here's a full set of links: http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Brigitte-Fassbaender-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXF8A/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Arturo-Toscanini-Compilation/dp/B00AFARIZA/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Constantin-Silvestri-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXHII/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Boris-Christoff-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXKC6/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-John-Mccormack-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXE4U/ I guess onlythe first two are of interest to me.

One of the finest and most influential of Swiss jazz' musicians has died. German articles: http://www.nzz.ch/aktuell/feuilleton/uebersicht/george-gruntz-gestorben-1.17935729 http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/kultur/pop-und-jazz/JazzPianist-George-Gruntz-ist-tot-/story/23334081 He played with Barney on "Mental Cruelty", founded The Band with the Ambrosettis (the late Flavio and Franco who's not exactly a youngster and was a frequent collaborator of Gruntz' until most recent times, though I've never seen them play together) and Daniel Humair, the great drummer ... led for a long time his on-and-off band of cracks which he later re-named the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, recording lots of albums, some of them including cameos by the likes of Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, John Scofield etc. etc. He also wrote several programmes for the NDR and WDR radio big bands, dedicated to amongst others the music of Mingus and Monk. I was lucky to catch him live in December 2011 with his concert jazz band - including, amongst others, Larry Schneider, Chris Hunter, Luciano Biondini, Dave Bargeron, Gary Smulyin and an absolutely stunning Howard Johnson. Thank you for all the music, Mr. Gruntz!

Just lost a long reply, the new o-board sucks in several respects... Anyway, I was really pissed about that great disc being in such sorry state after only a few months (might have arrived like this, I only found out once my EAC ripping process took half a day to complete). And the BoB release that prompted this thread has been here for a few months now, too - and it's excellent!
