  1. coming up on DG, can't find any details on their site yet: The John Eliot Gardiner Collection, 30CD, amazon.de pre-order EUR 62,99 could be mighty good, no? all I have is what's in the DG Baroque box (mainly Monteverdi's wonderful "Orfeo", but also some Schütz, Bach etc.)
  2. the tetragonisation of crap, probably - sorry, but there's really no need to put liners on the back of a poster in order to put that - fold to the size of a regular CD booklet - into a slot that holds a booklet ...
  3. shit! will dig up some of his music, always seemed to like him somewhat better than all those who found him "academic" (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean)
  4. Happy birthday! Just saw her in the movies, singing the title song in Otto Preminger's "Bonjour Tristesse". Definitely one of the film's best moments!
  5. maybe after all we should invest here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/461687407/kickstarter-open-source-death-star
  6. Did anyone actually ever compare the Mosaic and the two discs with some of the same material on American Music? I was overjoyed to find the Mosaic some time back, but then didn't like the discovery that I've already owned a substantial part of it ... and just stacked the discs away then ... How come, anyway, that material ended up on American Music and Blue Note?
  7. I can relate to that very much ... it's a mighty fine and swinging album, but something that's there on the Philips albums is definitely lacking here. Couldn't say quite what it was, but that's how I always heard it.
  8. Mal Waldron with Woody Shaw and Charlie Rouse .... or with Jim Pepper. (Only "Crowd Scene" with Sonny Fortune has been mentioned so far, I think.) And thinking of Mal Waldron: ragged, but I like it!
  9. :tup Julian Dash, too!
  10. Great track, but it's 13:19. How about "Marchin' Along" (17:40) from Tiny Grimes and Hawkins' "Blues Groove"? Never let it be said that Bean couldn't play the blues -- at least eventually. In case Grimes is not to your taste, Hawkins' epic solo begins at the 8:26 mark and lasts roughly 5:40. Oh yes, great track!
  11. cheers! Now back on topic ... don't think Art Pepper has been mentioned? Plenty of long tunes I love in his late recordings, but I can't nominate any favourites, would have to return to the music first ... but I do remember some particularly good stuff on the Ronnie Scott's sessions that Laurie put out (the "Blues for the Fisherman" tapes). And another bit of hard-to-believe wonder: the twenty or so minutes track featuring Albert Ayler with the 1962 Cecil Taylor trio (Lyons/Murray) from the "Holy Ghost" box!
  12. So you found it, the quadrature of the circle!
  13. I guess I'll go for the Perlman, Stern and Zukerman ... will have to investigate Kapell ... and if I ever want to dig into more Schönberg, give some thought. I assume the Boulez/Schönberg is a repacking of these two (of which Vol. I is OOP and expansive): http://www.amazon.de/Pierre-Boulez-Edition-Schönberg-I/dp/B002N2NDY8/ http://www.amazon.de/Pierre-Boulez-Edition-Schönberg-II/dp/B002N2NDYS/ Readable back-covers: Would those have contained texts?
  14. more upcoming Sony/BMG sets: http://www.amazon.de/Colin-Davis-Conducts-Sibelius/dp/B00AK3X33I/ http://www.amazon.de/Yo-Yo-Plays-Concertos-Sonatas-Suites/dp/B00AK3X306/ http://www.amazon.de/Evgeny-Kissin-Plays-Chopin/dp/B00AK3X3LK/ http://www.amazon.de/Isaac-Stern-Plays-Mozart/dp/B00AL6SN5W/ http://www.amazon.de/Pinchas-Zukerman-Beethoven-Violin-Sonatas/dp/B00AL6SMX0/
  15. I guess just about everything that came to mind has been mentioned ... took me a while to dig "Tanya" btw! One more that I love (the CD version, which I think is a bit longer?): Miles Davis - Circle in the Round Also some of Miles' 1960 tour tracks run for a while ... "All Blues" from Zurich (the recent TCB disc is terrific, as I already mentioned twice or thrice) is a favourite track of mine. About Prestige ... there's some great funky stuff on those two dates Red Garland led with Trane and Byrd - I love it! Same goes for much of Ammons' jam material. Same goes, btw, for plenty of JATP material, which some may find bullshit (which others, including me, will then call bullshit in return).
  16. I got an email from DMG about a few copies of a Paul Dunmall/FMR 49 CD + 1 DVD set!!! Well, let's hope the per-disc-price is somewhat below the NYAQ set ...
  17. Thanks a lot indeed for sharing these memories!
  18. Yes -- alternate takes. Thanks, guess I will buy again then!
  19. Do you know if it will contain anything not on the LP?
  20. (just got a mail from Mosaic ... seems I finally made it back onto their email list, yowzah!)
  21. Thought pre-orders were taken until end of January only? Anyway, can't wait for this!
  22. Well, I paid 36€ for it, all included - which is fine for a hardcover book of such size! But it seems the prices have gone up (I got mine from amazon.fr, which lists it at 51€ now) and/or the book went out of stock too. Best price seems to be 43€ at amazon.de but it's out of stock there, so ... anyway, glad to have a hardcopy of it, even more so since the kindle edition costs a whopping 32€ as well! (Now that IS crazy in my book!)
  23. Yep, the Merrill is amazing in my book. Just so is the Sassy. The Dinah material is a bit wandering in my book, jam sessions, so that doesn't come unexpected. Still good. Good to see these sessions back in an official way, the shelves were flooded recently with crappy boots of this material over here, it seems!
