I love the album a lot - but the CD version is good enough, costs about half a kidney less, too.

Sorry to do it again - but really, if you're interested, why not do a quick search? Here's the official Organissimo Forums Andrew Hill SpaceTM: There are many other threads around, probably one to three on just about each and every CD he ever released (yep, others are too lazy to search as well), several recommendations threads, discographical ones, threads on Hill gigs etc. etc.

Actually, what's the story of the Mingus material? On Period and on Bethlehem, how come? Thanks for the Paula Castle vids ... nice enough, for sure! Oh, that one was part of the Rhino/Avenue series - very nice album! I'm game for "Grand Stan" - I mixed those two up!

digging into some of discs 2-4 of this set .... George Gruntz, Flavio and Franco Ambrosetti, Helen Merrill, Elsie Bianchi, Irene Schweizer, Pierre Favre, OM and more -
Good, but these are mostly the most obvious choices ... not sure I can be bothered to get the ones I don't yet have (Bobby Scott, Paula Castle, Bobby Troup). And rather obviously from the weird lingo, these will omit the bonustracks that made some of the Rhino/Avenue reissues ... thinking of the Sims or the Mingus "Modern Symposium" (not included here). I might get a few of these to compare (I've only got some Charly version of Dexter's very good "Daddy Plays the Horn", for instance). The Helen Carr, btw, might not be too well-known, but is easily - and strongly - recommended. However, there, too, the Rhino/Avenue disc held both her albums and hence to my knowledge her complete (leader) output.

nothing against a good hump ... but no cars needed for that -
Spinning the Stuff Smith I have (the Mosaic plus some earlier and some later stuff, but not too much) .... and checking out the Storyvilles, I don't find much real info on them. The "Masters of Jazz" I guess is a compilation? And is there any overlap between the others? Does anyone have them all and can shed some light? "Hot Stuff" then seems to include the entire OOP "Live at Montmartre" (#1-9) and adding four more tracks (#10-13) - the first four of the other OOP disc, "Hot Violins" ... but where's the remaining six tracks from there? On "Five Fine Violins" you get two of those six tunes, but are they the same recordings? You also get all four tunes that are on "Hot Stuff" also - but again, same recordings? Some of it all may be on "Masters of Jazz", too ... what a mess! Can anyobo There seem to be lengthy Jazzhus Montmartre dates from: March 18, 1965 (9 titles, "Live at Montmartre", later on "Hot Stuff", I assume) March 23, 1965 (9 titles + unissued "Caravan", "Swinging Stuff", the Storyville CD of the same name also has "Caravan" plus 3 titles from March 4) Then, if I get the blurb on the Storyville site right, the disc titles "Five Fine Violins" holds the entire April 4, 1965 session with Stuff pairing up with the violin of Poul Olsen (new name to me, I must confess). So that date was expanded from three released plus two known unreleased titles to 12 titles? Then there's the session with Henri Chaix, poss. rec. Geneva May 29, 1965 (10 tracks, and for once a clear case) On June 4, 1965, Smith recorded for Swiss Radio with the Jazz Live Trio (released on a 4CD set "Jazz in Switzerland") Next up was "Stuff and Steff" (reissued in the Jazz in Paris series, again a clear case), then some more Paris material (with Smith forced to use an acoustic violin as the promoters failed to put the promised amp on stage, or so I read). Then, as we get into 1966, there's more from Copenhagen: January 30-31, 1966 (5 titles with Svend Asmussen, 4 on "Hot Violins", but only the last four are on the recent CD titled "Hot Stuff" - where is "When You're Smiling", the first of the five?) On September 27, 1966, another date for Swiss Radio took place (part of a fairly recent TCB disc which I don't yet have, but it's been on the to-buy-list for a while). October 13, 1966 saw Smith in Warsaw at the Jazz Jamboree (4 titles, 3 on a Muza LP) Then, in 1967 it's back to Copenhagen: February 18, 1967 (4 tunes, 2 on "Hot Violins", 2 unissued) Now this is far from complete I assume ... ? I guess I can happily buy "Hot Stuff", "Swinging Stuff", "Five Fine Violins" and the disc with Chaix ... but I won't have it all then, as far as I can see - but right now I'm rather confused.

amazon.it has the Vivarte box for 50€ currently http://www.amazon.it/Vivarte-Collection-Various-Artists/dp/B00AOTZ156/ Haven't played more than a third to half of it, but I jumped for it when it was in a similar price range and haven't regretted doing so!

And Levy was a Chicagoan too, right? Or at least back then (the forties trio on the Progressive disc I just played previously to the Mosaic) he was well-known there? I guess Jimmy Jones is pretty darn interesting, not always great, but when he's on, he's on to something! The Eddie Johnson disc (the Nessa, that is), is ready to be played again too, after the recently revived thread. I like it a lot! -

That's definitely one of my favorite Mosaic boxes, ever! I guess too much music was committed to disc in too short a time, and after Granz sold to MGM and they god rid of Stuff, the recordings just lay in the archives ... glad they weren't lost, for sure! There's some marvellous music on the unreleased session with Jimmy Jones! -

I got the set from amazon (only slightly more expensive shortly after it (re-) appeared, but haven't come around listening to any of it yet ... it has a minimal booklet, but there's a PDF you can get from the label's website that has huge booklet including a long text by Badura-Skoda with notes on each sonata (over 200 pages, but it's in four languages, en/fr/ge/it).
