Okay, I'll take the bait one last time (even if it seems like I'm on a lark's ignore list) ... my deep fascination for Schnabel is honest and personal and has nothing to do with whatever I read. I've really not read anything much about classical music, just snippets here and there ... I don't have the time to read any magazines, let alone books. I rely on a few friends whose generosity in sharing their recommendations and their love for classical music has opened up an entire new world for me. Maybe I'm entirely wrong or missing the boat or whatever ... but I feel pointed at by some of these posts (the Beethoven endeavour mentioned above, as it was just what I undertook a while ago ... but then I never preached about this or that being the best ... I'd also never say "Furtwängler Bayreuth 1951 is the best Beethoven ninth there is", I've not explored many recordings of that symphony yet, but Furtwängler's shook my innards, so to speak, touched me in a rare way ... and that - I know for myself, regardless of what others may think - was a genuine and to me personally, important experience. But I'm outta here now, it feels weird to even try ...

Mark VII is among the best! But yeah, I also love what I've heard of the Steeplechase stuff (baffled me a bit to read all about the Bob Berg 'chases in the obits here, rather than about the Cliff Jordan ones! My preference is clearly for the earlier ones w/Jordan!), despite the rough sound -- "Half Note", for one, sounds like someone had a tape recorder hidden out in the wardrobe - but the music's darn good! And thanks, David! Last clarification question (assuming your just posted "yes" was the answer only to the Ware question and not to this question as well): sideman dates will not be included, none of them?
-
Well, considering the update, the list I put up above (which would only fill 4 or maybe 5 discs anyway) is outdated and it seems sideman-sessions not included. But I'm really looking forward to getting proper editions of the Payne and Brackeen albums! Since Ware is mentioned ... that means the CD that the Wilbur Ware Institute put out recently will be included as well, I assume?
-
Well, what really is there, other than "for me"? Cogito ergo sum.

Did it ever strike anyone that a sixties jazz record with that title is a real odd thing? What did it mean to say? L'art pour l'art as opposed to the militant activists of the civil rights movement? And then this same guy has his own label and stuff at the same time, taking control of his work? I find it a really puzzling reference - to a great but ultimately failed book. Anyway, I recently got hold of a nice japanese mini-LP edition of "Clifford Jordan in the World" and that's one hell of a great album! At this time it's hands down my favourite by Jordan! Checking out his discography here: http://www.cliffordjordan.com/discography_63_72.html and here: http://www.cliffordjordan.com/discography_73_77.html These are the Strata East albums listed: Charles Tolliver - Music Inc (1971) Clifford Jordan - In the World (1972) Jazz Contemporaries (Keno Duke) - Reasons in Tonality (1972) Muriel Winston - A Fresh Viewpont (1974) Clifford Jordan - Glass Bead Games (1974) Colors (The Brass Company) (1975) Charles Tolliver - Impact (1975)

I certainly object to this description of what I assume refers to my posts of some weeks back ... I don't think I ever pontificated (cool word, btw, I'll keep it in mind when I read your next sermon ) about anything here. I might have some opinions but I sure am no pontificator.

Hm, I got all those ... if there's mono there, I won't need the new one (have it on pre-order, but there's ample time to cancel of course).
-
Not sure in how far that is relevant for a CD set though ... or did I miss something and they have also announced vinyl in the meantime?
-
Okay, thanks! I just wasn't entirely sure what you were referring to exactly, Hans!
-
So are you saying all mono CDs have such artefacts? Do they get into existance even if all you do is duplicate the channels? And do CDDA files need to have two channels? On a computer, you can have WAV files in mono with one channel, no duplication needed ... or do the artefacts necessarily sneek in whilst the mono signal is going through the amplifier?
-
Very interesting - thanks TTK for the explanation! But since this box is a CD box ... I guess the stylus won't matter much. But does - for CDs - having a mono button or not make a difference?

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

As far as Basie-like stuff goes, my vote is for the Quinichette albums (Prestige and ... uhm, Mighty Quinn ... Capitol or where was that one from?), they really are a nice bunch, all four of them! Cohn has done some great things, of course, but I hear those RCAs on the good rather than very good (not to mention great) side. And again, the Joe Newman with Frank Foster is magic! This one: -
Thanks Hans! Was too tired to look it up last night ... had EMI mixed up, somehow (and thought Warner ended up w/Universal, which would have meant only two remaining ...) Of all those many new boxes, I might actually be in for this one:
-
Thanks! I thought I read a rather differing statement a while ago. But not being an audiophile helps anyway, I guess

And if you don't have a mono button? Any negative effect when playing mono recordings?

Hm, I think there's better Newman (the Swingville with Frank Foster is magnificient!) and Cohn. Nothing against the Select, it's nice and all, but as so many RCAs, it's a bit on the light side (or on the side of: producer calling a very strict regiment). -
Well, the real deluge seems to be the one from Sony ... But what about Warner/Universal? Thought I got a mail from EMI telling me they'll hand over my data to Universal now ... so it's not SonyTimeWarner but EMIWarnerUniversal? Or do they maintain some kind of separation (still doing seperate Decca boxes at least at this time)?
-
I believe they are - but I'm no expert. I'd rather guess it's PD stuff? Or would it have to have been previously released for being PD? The Bird/Diz Town Hall was copied in Spain as soon as it was out, and in that very case they couldn't to a vinyl rip themselves, no way ... not sure how the laws work with previously unissued material that is old enough to be PD.

Is this the one? Yeah, is that the one? Yes, that should be it. Personnel is identical at least. I've got it as part of the big Legacy Furtwängler coffin ... no expert on his discography, really. Maybe someone more in the know can definitely confirm Naxos also has it, it seems (some prefer their sonics): http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.111060
