Why use commas with numbers anyway ... we use apostrophes here, and all that's at the bottom means it goes to the next smaller unit 53'342.98 is fifty three thousand three hundred forty two point ninety eight. Sometimes all those anglo-saxons just don't make sense

Some Autumn shows - UK/Europe
king ubu replied to Alexander Hawkins's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I'll definitely try and be there at Rote Fabrik! If you feel like having a chat before or after the concert, I'd sure be in! They haven't yet put the October concerts on their site, so I was not aware - great news! -
Sheesh, guys, you have me falling into a coma ... The box is a straight reissue of the Koyama-produced "Brownie" box that has all the EmArcy material. There's even a line on the huge backcover that says so. As for Universal, yes ... ex-Fantasy material is indeed distributed by Universal in Europe, for quite a while already (probably after Concord took over ... before that, we had those crazy sales when the previous licensee, ZYX sold off its remaining stock - the forum dinosaurs fondly remember that, I'm sure). These sets are legit ... and yes, the stuff's PD, so that probably explains why they're cheap - no payments going anywhere, as with all the pirates, but you get the music from the source (or well, closer to the source an in usually better fidelity than from the pirates). But then it is my understanding that the same applies to Japanese reissues which are so fondly treasured here, so no one dare and complain, m'kay? There are many italian boxes around and some of them have been discussed here ... Coltrane, Rollins, Miles Prestige, Monk, Baker Riverside, Ellington Carnegie Hall, Evans Riverside/Milestone ... they have the albums and nothing else. So the Rollins is smaller, only including leader dates (not sure about co-led/jam ones ... there's a much nicer German reissue of the big box with all of it and with a booklet, too, this one, while this is the Italian one - it says 12 discs there - but these will be 40min discs, one album per CD). I guess the cheapo Universal repackings (JATP, Pres - both very OOP) are from Universal Italy as well. Not sure there have been more of those, but the big Billie Holiday box has just been re-done, too (I mentioned it elsewhere): Mind you, I don't have any of these ... bought the Rollins once, since I'd mis-placed the booklet of the small-scale ZYX Complete Prestige Recordings set ... only to find the Rollins had no liners whatsoever, all very basic, a nice colourful booklet with a double-page on each album, cover on one side, info on the other ... all you really need to know, but none more ... after the missing booklet turned up in the empty house of my parents again, just before they started tearing down ... I presented the other box to a friend. @Lon: do go for the Konitz Milestone if you don't have it! The four albums pesent Lee in a variety of settings and they're all very good! The two later duos w/Alan Broadbent haven't grabbed me really yet (I'm not even sure I've heard the second one at all). I got all of them in single editions.

Half an hour of disc seven to go ... as great as expected ... and "A Lonely Day in Selma, Alabama/Freedom" on the final disc is definitely a highlight! -

Disc five - Mingus at Monterey -
r.i.p. Always enjoyed the Chico Hamilton Quintet with him - and a lot so! One of my first five or six Mosaics, and the original band with Collette and Katz was truly wonderful! http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-fred-katz-dies-20130909,0,1766008.story

just got this ... spinning the Town Hall concert - great Jaki Byard opening ... very good to have all this new music (though I've got the Ulysse LPs and the Monterey 1964 double, as well as "Town Hall Concert" and the one Monterey 1965 track on the Malpaso compilation ... there's more new stuff than I'd have expected ... I really didn't even bother to look too closely since it was clear I'd get this box anyway!) -
Promising development in high-res streaming and d/l from Sony
king ubu replied to David Ayers's topic in Audio Talk
Guess Neil Young would make a perfect politician then Just had a look, Qobuz won't sell this stuff to Switzerland ... guess this going digital thing is also a way to force people to buy at ridiculous prices again - iTunes over here is a hoot, I get a real CD form Italy, France or Germany for half the price (and can of course rip it to whatever format I chose ... or if ordering from Germany might even get it in the amazon MP3 player ... though this thread here is about the contrary of MP3). -
Thanks! Had the book here for a while (from the library) but didn't think of checking this session then.

Congratulations, Daniel!

So, re: Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard, it's Bailey on "A Night in Tunisia" (8:16) and "I've Got You Under My Skin" (10:03 - just one take on the 2CD set)? The RVG disc only has an asterisk (denoting the Bailey/La Roca line up) for the first, but the second isn't included in the Ware discography on www.jazzdiscography.com ... and aural evidence might support that, but honestly I'm not really sure I could tell, not being familiar with Bailey the bassist whatsoever, and Elvin is in his early stage here ... but then La Roca's groove on "Tunisia" is different (and I prefer it, actually) ... but there's Elvin's "lose" beat from note one on the second "Tunisia" and none of that on "Skin", so yeah, I guess it's Bailey/La Roca there, indeed? Was this ever discussed before? I hadn't listened to this one in a while and it just felt strange so I went looking it up in the Ware disco, and there ...

No, the original box wasn't bigger ... the Booklet is the size of a jewel case (not included inside, but next to the jewel cases in the box). But what's missing is the bonus disc with one track (I think). Don't have the box handy, but that's no big omission, I think - just another alternate or rehearsal take, though a nice one.
-
Yes .... you also get the facsimile articles and stuff, I guess, besides Dan Morgenstern's essay?
-
Seems to includea booklet with the full notes from the previous box, as far as I know. (I've got the old box, paid a fortune, but I've lived with that music for so long now, it's been beyond price tags for a while).

This thread should be moved to recommendations, here it will quickly vanish amongst ugly album covers. Those who enjoy the two Milestones by Don Friedman with Attila Zoller should also look for this one: Reissued on CD by ACT some years ago, no idea how hard it is to find. And yes, that Joe Puma album Larry mentioned is wonderful. It was reissued in Japan in 2011 - had to get it as a fan of Eddie Costa's, but I've heard Puma before (amongst other things on his own "Wild Kitten") and it's definitely worth getting for him as well.

Thought they'd been on the list for quite a while ... no mail received today anyway. -
The one with all twenty takes of "Azalea"? Or W.C. Handy? Not that it matters, since I don't have an SACD player, but ...

Love "Plays Handy" ... yes, Mr. Sangrey, "Azalea" :tup - that's desert island stuff, a sublime moment!
