Just bought both Soul Notes (plus "Faces of Hope", too) from amazon.it - the real thing, and rather cheap. Not sure about shipping to the US. Also just bought "Les Trinitaires", went with some vendor, cost me a bit, but I think it's well worth it. Link to the Soul Notes on amazon.it (hope it works, straight one wouldn't even be displayed, for whatever reason): http://tinyurl.com/n5yfjur

The German label that nicely reissued "Alabama feeling" by arthur Doyle on lp a few years back had planned on reissuing the Black Unity lp but nothing ever materialized apparently due to objections from Abdul Wadud? I'm aware of their (past?) intentions yes, not sure how far they got and if there was an ultimate "no" though.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
guess I'll just play it all through ... been way too long! @David: love the J.J. box, wouldn't want to miss it! -
Oh, wasn't aware of that ... guess that's one of the shady techniques to obstruct proper reissues, too ... I'm not sure it's a classic by anyone's standards anyway (I know it's on that hippo free jazz rarities list, of course, but ...), but I like it a lot. There's also be the Black Unity Trio, "Al Fatihah" - but the same disclaimers apply there even more, I guess.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
discs three, "Go" and "A Swingin' Affair" with the great Clark-Warren-Higgins unit ... this stuff's my bread and butter! Guess i got to get that King Jazz set, too! -
Well you never know ... they're not Isipingo but the date may be off - seems at the BBC they never bothered much about stating any dates and with the files being "around" probably no one really knows the source and if the info is accurate as far as the date goes ... let's just wait and see. New Harry Miller is a feast, no matter what!

I'd be all for the Barron! As far as forgotten avantgarde gems go, there's also "The Sun Is Coming Up" by Ric Colbeck.

YAY!!!!! Hope you like it. MG So what on earth's that one anyway? I don't have eyes like a hawk and never saw the sleeve, so I'm clueless ...

It has to be more than is around ('t was on my blog) -- at least if there's no overlap with the Reel Recordings disc, that is. There's none as early as 1973 in circulation, to my best knowledge (but there are hoarders among the collectors/tapers/traders, so you never really know). The stuff I'm aware of that's NOT on the Reel disc and is from 73-76 is only this: Harry Miller Isipingo - 1976 Marc Charig (t), Malcolm Griffiths (tb), Mike Osborne (as), Stan Tracey (p), Harry Miller (b), Louis Moholo (d) Family Affair (9:58) Where Now Then? (9:53) Then there's two lengthy cuts by the Harry Miller Quintet from 1977 (also Beeb recordings), but the new disc looks like it won't have them (they're "Orange Groove" and "A Traumatic Experience", the band is Miller with Trevor Watts, Alan Wakeman, Bernie Holland and Louis Moholo).

Huh, really? No links and stuff there, no scans, just the discography as a protected PDF. Not the CD-Rom I got with my copy of the book (ther German edition, alas).

What live music are you going to see tonight?
king ubu replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Saw Sheila in Vienna some six or seven years ago and she was magnificient ... doing three sets with the late Fritz Pauer's trio, and at the end, when I went to say thanks and shook hands quickly, she was astonished to hear someone remembered her Blue Note album (one very dear to me). Would love to hear her again! -
The Nessa Juggernaut rolls on
king ubu replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Very cool, Chuck - any new Russell is good news ... the world's got every burp and fart of Slime Ivdsa in fake stereo, now it needs more Hal Russell! Will definitely want the Ira Sullivan, too - besides "Blue Stroll" I know him together with Red Rodney (the early stuff on Fantasy and Savoy/Signal, two Elektra LPs, and the 32 Jazz compilation from teh Village Vanguard) and on some intriguing sidemen albums with Lin Halliday, Eddie Harris, Roland Kirk, the aborted Blakey date, the classic J.R. Monterose Blue Note album. Intriguing musician, for sure! -
Isipingo, 1973-76! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Different-Times-Places-Harry-Miller/dp/B00FEFJT1W

Hilariously fun concert, even though Darlene Edwards was a no show Thanks so much to the guys, Alexander, Taylor, Harris, and Dominic! Really enjoyed the music and had a great time having dinner with you afterwards :tup What I totally love about your music is how it allows composition and improvisation to morph into and out of each other seemlessly, how you mingle structure with freedom - and fill that freedom with, if I might quote that record title (a favourite title and a very good record, too!), inspired abandon. Love how you all let loose and still never lose ground. Also - of course! - love the african stuff you're adding, Ghana, ZA, whatever - the warmth really permeates your playing. And no grooves or simple riffs ever do restrict you, even though you don't have a problem to stick with it for as long as it's good. There's some qualities in that that are way too rare in contemporary jazz! You got a good thing goin' -

Un-American Jazz ! Bop to post-bop (and everything in between)
king ubu replied to Simon8's topic in Recommendations
the Polish stuff at least (mostly) fits the time frame, unlike some other of my recommendations -
I think he overdosed with the truth

Certainly no disagreement from me on that point!

Yes, the albums with McDuff are a fine bunch, all three of them! Not that big a fan of Poppa Lou, I'm afraid ... his opinionated manner gets on my nerves bigtime, though his music can be very good, even if his own playing always seems somewhat "derivated" to me, to put it in a rather nice way

Yes, all Japanese reissues I lately got (including plenty Toshiba/EMI ones) had flimsier than usual jewel cases ... But I'm still confused ... the Mingus I got (the second of his non-playing albums) is not on the list linked above ... so that one is (as I assumed) real Japanese? (Still in flimsier case.) And about that list, the Rhino reissue(s?) of "Warne Marsh" weren't available in in the UK? Or what kind of bull is that "never been issued before on CD" line there ... nationalist/peninsular crap? Does that exclude CDs available up and down all vendors sites in the western "hemi"sphere (it's more like a 10%-sphere or so, or even less, I guess)? Or was that Marsh really so rare? I thought I'd seen it around, but then having the Mosaic, I didn't need it ...
