  1. good obit on the New Yorker site: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2013/10/lou-reed-gardenia-and-snowflake.html
  2. How could they get alternate takes by doing needle drop? Just edit out a few seconds here and there and call it "alternate"?
  3. more (too many covers for one post, sorry):
  4. some favourites, no particular order ...
  5. Then I'm not sure what your point is at all, sorry. They play by the rules - and this box is quite certainly not all PD material (i.e. "Communications '72" was recorded in 1971). And it does happen now and then that majors share their stuff amongst each other (surely not for free, I reckon), the inclusion of some Columbia material is certainly not unprecedented (though come to think of it, that may be PD material, too - which would indeed beg the question what sources they're using ... I'd hope they'd still pay Sony some to get good material to work from).
  6. Damn, Gaslini fell off the truck (or rather: out of the flimsy amazon package), Bley was still in there, but one corner bruised (outer box only, so I'll just keep it). In light of the Gaslini not being currently in stock and the price having gone up, I really, really hope they're not just giving me a refund, I'd really be mad if they did! Oh how I'd love to have real record stores (but not those we had where this Gaslini box would have cost 100 € at least).
  7. Wow! "Trinity" was the first McPhee that really hit me smack in the face ... love all the McPhee from that vintage!
  8. Would say very low chance ... but I'd gladly be proven wrong, even more so if they added Barney's "Zodiac" next time 'round (I've got it to listen, but still would love a "real" copy of it).
  9. Trivia: the lady here seems to have done the artwork for "Edge-Ing" (which is actually the trio soonafter known as "Trio 3", plus Charles Eubanks on piano):
  10. Got the Farmer and Lake out of the mailbox a few minutes ago - since the lp jackets are just about readable to me, I was happy to see ALL the Farmers come with original back-covers (while Lake is on the other end, there's only one out of seven, and that one has no liners, just a Thulani Davis poem).
  11. Yes, they'd be most nice to have, but alas ... got my Cyrille set today, guess the others will arrive tomorrow or the day after.
  12. Not sure if it's of any comfort, but it's an EmArcy release, Universal France if you will: http://www.universalmusic.fr/michel-legrand/actu/le-coffret-evenement-anthology-de-michel-legrand/ Now I have no clue if they pay any royalties - but I guess they don't (and I guess the Japanese yadda yadda yadday ... this is getting tiresome) as the laws say they needn't. However, this is coming from the "source" I guess they make use of about as good sources are possible to obtain. So yeah, it's PD, at least partly (not all of it is older than 50 years!), but no, it's not from LonehillFreshsoundGambitRLRAvidJSPRetrievalChronologicalHepJazzlipsProperAmericanJazzClassicsPollWinnersRecrords or whomever you want - and yeah, those great labels doing their own transfers of 78s are doing the same, just in case you forgot ... granted stealing others' transfers isn't okay yet I'm not sure who actually does and who doesn't and I'm not one to support any of those all-too-shady practices, but I'm also no supporter of Disney and multimillionaires to extend copyright just for the sake of their bank accounts getting even fatter ... so, bottom line: this set is perfeclty kosher in my book, in each an every respect.
  13. Well, for Brubeck, this one comes to mind first: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Columbia-Studio-Albums-Collection/dp/B0077PPQGO/ I'm still hoping they'll follow suit with a live box, too! As for Peterson ... his recorded legacy is huge. A few favourites: "At the Stratford Shakespearean Festival", "The Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson/Affinity", "The London House Sessions", "Mellow Mood", "Tristeza on Piano", "Walking the Line", "Another Day", "Tracks", "Great Connection", "Satch and Josh" (w/Count Basie - there's five of them in total), "Oscar Peterson et Joe Pass à la Salle Pleyel" ...
  14. Thanks! Not quite my turf though (at least not so far). I'd catch them live if they were coming to town though.
  15. Joyeux anniversaire, Guy! Present is on the way
  16. I'll gladly take that one! That is, if paypal from credit card goes alright, it's been a while since I've bought anything from you (if I ever did, not sure at all).
  17. Indeed! I've got some more duplification and triplification between the two and the Gardiner Collection, but these boxes are cheap (and even with duplicates they use much less shelf space than single discs would), so I'm not complaining at all. The Sleeves are a bit on the flimsy side here - as they are in the Baroque box. But the booklet at nearly 200 pages is much bigger (not sure if it's better on substance yet).
  18. Yes - but not too much ... Minkowski with Rameau's "Symphonie Imaginaire", the Gabrieli "Music for San Rocco" disc, Gardiner with Monteverdi's "Vespro della beata vergine" ... not sure that's really all there is. To me, there's more overlap with single releases (Richter's recording ot the St Matthew, Curtis' of "Alcina", the Händel arias by Kozena (not really that great anyway, I think). I'd not need the single discs extracted from other boxes I've already got, either: Mozart piano concertos (Bilson/Gardiner), Beethoven Symphonies (Gardiner), the Victoria disc (that box is still unlistened though) ... other popular releases included are McCreesh's recording of Händel's "Messiah" which I don't yet have ... there are a few other discs I'm not really interested in all that much, but then there are others I very much wanted to get (like the Deller or Otter "Lamenti" ones). The Goldbergs are by Trevor Pinnock (the Baroque box has Roussel, I think?), the Scarlatti Sonatas are by Kirkpatrick (the Baroque has Pinnock, I think) On first sight, it looks great!
  19. What's that? Dicogs images can't be linked ...
  20. Ha, mine's on the way since last week ... hope it arrives today or tomorrow!

  22. Wow, that's a hard one ... really shocked by this news!
  23. I've got "Legrand" and "Communication" (which was reissued as part of the Jazz in Paris series) but haven't heard the Rodges and Shank ones yet. And I think I can deal wiht some of that Columbia stuff, too... Btw, Legrand just made an album with Natalie Dessay ... guess I gotta check out that one soon, too!
  24. Maybe those used in the recent French box?
  25. Ah well ... guess this is the only way Universal sees fit to do anything with their Legrand holdings ... I'd be in for single releases à la "Jazz in Paris", too - but they're not going to happen, so I'll gladly take the more is less box then
