  1. The above is a cheapo release - akin to the various boxes Sony has put out of RCA and Columbia material. It comes with no booklet or liners at all like those others do. Typical cheapo repackaged one, wouldn't pay more than 20-25$ for it.
  2. I've enjoyed this one a lot:
  3. Ooops, sorry, Steve! Guess we should rather start a new thread for these ... I just kinda went from the looks and didn't really think about the labels in question.
  4. Had to read that sentence twice ... but yeah, of course. We all know that what they say are the masters often aren't, even with official Blue Note stuff (or else the SHM alternate take incident would have taken place 10 or 15 years ago, I guess? Or do we have confirmation by now they are actually throwing out rejects?) Anyway, you're right of course. But operating under the assumption that these Dootone reissues are official (even if PD), they still are more to my liking than the Fresh Sound option. I've not yet gotten any of the actual Dootones though, but I want at least the Dexter!
  5. I wondered about the Chetty - and the Chico tunes did sound familiar - thanks for confirming! There were two Hawk albums on Crown, right? I've got a rip-off of a rip-off somewhere, but am not really familiar with this (I often don't play those crappy things and wait for a chance to grab the real thing). The tracklist is short (six tunes), so this is only one LP being reissued: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Hawk-Swings-Coleman-Hawkins/dp/B00FPQZLR6/ Ah, yes, there it is: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/the_hawk_swings_-_the_crown_sessions_2_lps_on_1_cd-cd-5791.html So they do Vol. 2 first? Let's hope they come around to "Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra" eventually, too!
  6. Yeah, it's just that I like what little I've heard ... some of those singers are great (Ernst Haefliger, Hertha Töpper, Peter Schreier). As far as sets go, I just ordered the Gardiner coffin ... no idea how it will fit into any shelf and how many years it will take me to listen, but the temptation was just too big and I'm convinced by whatever I've heard by Gardiner so far.
  7. coming up:
  8. Here are the next two Moochin' boxes coming up: Jazz On Film...Chet Baker ICON SERIES, Featuring - I Soliti Ignoti, Audace Colpo Dei Soliti, Urlatorialla Sbarra, Intrigo A Los Angeles & Smog http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jazz-Film-Chet-Baker-Featuring/dp/B00FXWC1NO/ Dec. 2 release Jazz On Film...Biopics, feat The James Dean Story, The Gene Krupa Story, The Five Pennies, Young Man With A Horn, The Glenn Miller Story, The Benny Goodman Story, The Eddy Duchin Story http://www.amazon.co.uk/Biopics-Pennies-Miller-Goodman-Duchin/dp/B00G26XARG/ Jan 6 release. Also, I don't know what "gettin' the plaudits" has to do with which one you rather ought to get ... seems it's pretty clear here that the wrong one gets the plaudits, if the terms "right" and "wrong" need be applied (they're wrong for this entire topic anyway). Need to add that I don't have any of these so far and am not sure I need them ...
  9. What about this one? http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00EYPQ4SY/ I've only heard very little of Richter's Bach, but this looks interesting to me!
  10. March 13, 1959? Probably some sad stuff to listen to - but I'd still like to hear it!
  11. To me, there's hardly any other than high order Griff, really (okay, I don't know ALL his later records)! But still this one hasn't caught my attention as much as several others of his Riversides have.
  12. Just caught this over in the Jimmy Giuffre thread, missed is when originally posted: Do you have any specifics? Would that have been Pres and a French trio (Urtreger)? Someone should really pull together all the scraps (those Jones-Smith alternates, the Library of Congress recording, this one from France ...) and release it!
  13. MOPDTK is style over substance ... empty hipster crap. Didn't take me long to figure that out, after a first, rather positive impression, it quickly faded (thought The Cherry Thing was the same ... though The Thing as a group definitely has a few things going for it, way more than MOPDTK).
  14. Not among Griffin's best, I'd say ... but it's still very much okay.
  15. o tempora o mores
  16. LA Times obit: http://www.latimes.com/obituaries/la-me-frank-wess-20131102,0,7824009.story#axzz2jZiCdlHM
  17. Yeah, pictured above ... forgot about it, got that one as well. Furthermore, he pops up on a session on the "1951" Chrono by James Moody.
  18. You can hear him in an early outing as a violin player on a Kenny Clarke session, too - got that one as part of "Klook's the Man" (Proper 4CD). Other than that, I've got exactly what you've got.
  19. it's not quite late November yet ...
  20. I'll get a replacement for the lost Gaslini whenever it's available again ... but damn, I've had a whole load of back luck with amazon orders last week, this was the worst.
  21. I can very much relate to that ... also to your previous post of course - about need (or lack thereof) to hear stuff at home vs. in concert. I play less and less contemporary avantgarde-leaning music at home. Tough I keep buying some kinds of. My Leo discs get few spins only, and honeslty I've not heard all the ten I ordered in last year's sale. Still I am tempted to get a few again this time ... filling some Taylor, Sun Ra, Art Ensemble gaps, maybe. Will have to inspect that list a little closer first though (and check if I still have my wantist from last year somewhere - probably not, so it's going from scratch again).
  22. Gee, get those international orders in the mail now, willya? I can hardly hold off listening to the files - which I got without any trouble, there was an error message on the first page, but if you pursue, you can still access them (might be worth telling those who run into problem, in order to save your own server some load). Anyway, I really want to first listen to this on CD! Looking forward an awful lot!

    Richard Raux?

Not life-changing ... but if you can get it for change (like I did, several years back), get it!
  24. Not sure I've got any choral stuff of his ... if at all, it's very little, so this is most welcome to me. I might of course still make up my mind in that it is really overkill, eventually ...
  25. kewl ... just ordered, should be mighty interesting!
