okay ... guess I'll mul it over for a while and maybe cancel my order then ... and I guess I'll take a pass on the Hantaï, too

Mahall is fine ... but he could try and strive for a bit more variety -- like he could start making use of any kind of change of loudness/volume, when I heard him in person, he was mostly working a range from ff to fff ... he might in fact be the second guy after Satchmo to think pp means "pound plenty"

Out of the albums that you mentioned, which would you say are the least structured? San Francisco, probably, or rather the bonus album therein. But plenty of stuff on those in your list is pretty structured (Dolphy and Tyner for one, and Ornette's c major music, too, really). Donauseschingen certainly is a good suggestion, too! I don't see "lack of structure" as a point of interest, rather how structure (or form) is used, how tradition is being expanded and stretched into new areas (which is maybe why "Mama Too Tight" is my favourite Shepp, you can hear Ellington in there ... and which is why ultimately I prefer Mingus or Dolphy or Ornette to, say, Charles Gayle, Frank Wright and others that are more on the berserk end of the spectrum. As for "the more dissonant ..." - different genre, but try some Phill Niblock (make sure no animals are harmed, though).

Lots of good stuff on Impulse ... "Mama Too Tight" is probably my favourite, but "Live in San Francisco" is great (the CD from the 90s is a "hidden" twofer), as are "On This Night", "Four for Trane", "Fire Music" ...

okay, here goes ... CD last bought from bricks and mortar store: some weeks ago (less and less often, prices have come down, but still are ridiculous - like double the prices of German, French or English online shops) CD last bought as download: never ever CD last bought from musician at gig: couple of weeks ago (not doing this all that often since prices being asked often tend to go into bricks and mortar regions) CD last bought from online supplier: couple of days ago (doing this weekly, my main supply) CD last listened to via paid-for streaming: never ever

Uhm, am I the only one who doesn't understand the original question here? I mean why should anybody even try?

New, at least to me ... guess I'd have heard (of) them if they were wide-spread. But the price tag is hefty. Would still love to hear this!

yeah yeah yeah! got around to buying and listening to it only a few weeks back, too - most intriguing music!

Okay - but it was Max then who mixed it up, not me ... he was talking about the GNP with that widow-blurb on the cover - and he thus made it sound like it was issued only after Brownie's death. Don't know about "Daahoud" - got the CD box though (and needless to say I love it). Sorry for this wrong info - but as I said, it comes from Max (or it was a *very* bad goof by some Swiss or German writer, who knows). Btw, since this is about Brownie and Sonny Rollins - put me in the Brownie and Land camp there! No matter how much love I've got for Rollins (lots and lots of!), I still get the chills each time I hear "Land's End" ... and all of "Study in Brown"! Obviously, the Bee Hive material is very different (and Nicky Hill's no slouch either!) and very exciting - but all things considered, "Study in Brown" is probably my desert island Brownie.
-
Roach once said (in some interview I read, many years ago), that the GNP was a boot too ... and that the blurb "from the personal collection of Mrs Brown" was a blatant lie as the tapes came from him ... no idea what's the truth (or if there is any).

Yeah, well, if you had me as a moderator, I would merge threads on a daily basis ... in fact we might end up with the entire board in one thread Anyway, got to get the Dexter disc, for sure ... can anyone say something more on the Collette? I did see post #68, but with so many derailed posts, I guess asking for more than one sentence on one of only four albums (or rather: reissues thereof) that were initially the topic of this verbose discussion isn't asking too much ... well, I guess, I hope!

Ah, ambiguity, cherished salt of life, beloved sweetness of thought ... and all gone now, ohimè!

"If folks simply shrugged them off, epithets would be powerless." that's a very slippery slope there, my friend!

(Although I admit I didn't know about this Dootone thread when I posted it.) And you did throw Dootone and Crown together too. so the moderator who locked that thread could re-open it and rename it so we have our Crown thread ...
