  1. I played the entire box set yesterday and today ... not sure what to say, I've got low-fi equipment and ears, but I did a quick a/b on "Sid's Delight" (one of my favourite tracks from all these recordings), as well as on one chance track each from "Miles Ahead" and "Porgy and Bess". I seem to hear the mono as sounding louder (guess what, I might need to move the volume button, but then somebody else would need to adjust WAV and not tell me what I heard for any real comparison anyway), and punchier, while the stereo is kind of opening up spaces, which is something I love. However, the mono is kind of more "in your face" and that's a coo thing, too. What I do pity though is the absence of the few bonus tracks - like the full Newport set, blues with Philly Joe on "Someday My Prince Will Come" or "Love for Sale" from the 1958 sextet session - they could have added "58 Miles", too, but then that one probably came out way after the mono era ... so did "Jazz at the Plaza" - which had me wonder: was that stuff ever prepared back in the day? If so, they should really have aded it, completing the picture with that better (than Newport) live set - in mono for the first time or whatever, I don't care ... it would just have added to a fuller picture. Same with the outtakes, alt takes etc - I mean, this all being recorded in the mono ear is a point, too, not just released, but then with the original album fetish approach, we're all about released here, so no wonder they didn't go for the fuller picture ... I still regret that a bit, even more so as there would have been room for 2-3 more discs in the box. Anyway, needless to say I immensely enjoyed listening to all that music!
  2. What are you trying to say? The US sleeve seems to be the one we all know ... the above seems to be the one of a Japanes 12" reissue (never saw it before), at least according to Losin: http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Disco.aspx?id=Midnight-NC
  3. Still with the Miles ... enjoying it a lot - but since I got to really know all of this music with the great box sets from the 90s, it does feel weird to have these, uhm, abridged versions ... Into disc five, "Porgy and Bess", by now ... and continuing. Impression is pretty good, doing a quick comparison of "Milestones" on headphones showed maybe a bit less clarity (and obviously less space), but making up for that with more punch. But "Jazz Track", the "Ascenseur" part really doesn't sound too good - all that reverb they added, I know it's "original", but still, it's not sounding good at all. Don't think the old French CD I've got sounded that bad in the "reverb"-portion, but then I enjoy the full session more anyway (and I just tried my luck in finally obtaining a copy of the 2003 digipack reissue from Universal France, the one that should be a considerable upgrade on the old CD).
  4. Dang! Guess then it was my mix-up after all, sorry about that!
  5. She not enjoying the music? Then throw her in the water!
  6. Well, it was the new Dolphy and Adderley SHMs that went off my list ... surely not OOP yet, or else my jokes about seven minutes of availability will ring even truer from now on Btw, I'm almost through "Miles Ahead" (darn that squeaky Art Taylor drum chair! but at least he had a conductor preventing him from rushing here ) and think these sound fine - but remember I'm not audiophile and am - again right now! - mostly enjoying the great, great music!
  7. And probably they'll be gone before I remember to order them (doesn't CD Japan maintain that "saved items" list? I had some in there, but it's all empty again after less than two weeks).
  8. Yep, that's what I was referring to. Intra EU is problematic in many respects, too, of course ... but this is all getting a bit too far into politics here, I'm afraid.
  9. It bothers me, too - bigtime - but what to do? Local retail is done, local manufacturing even more so ... but indeed, there are many, many things I'd gladly pay, say 20% more if I knew people manufacturing it were being treated in a dignified way. Now I'm not saying Sony isn't treating workers in Poland in an acceptable way - I sure hope they do, and the upside is this creates jobs and opportunities ... only all too often, the main focus seems to be on "cheaper, faster, more" type of exploitation. Rotten world. Anyway, hope the postman will dump the Hancock today - and that Miles Mono box is overdue, too!
  10. To me it's a bit hard to say ... as with Chapter One, the live memory lingers so strongly still in my head, the record sounds a bit "cute" by comparison. Okay, it's much denser than the concerts (the one I was at and the ones recorded by European radio stations or fans), much shorter - and I kind of like that idea. But on the other hand, it feels a bit - just a bit, don't get me wrong! - as if they got rid of all the "jazz" in the production. It's so darn condensed it's almost a "pop" record - and I sure enjoyed the lengthier blowing and improvised parts in the live shows! Anyway, with such wonderful concerts, a record can hardly ever compete -
  11. Someone rather do proper and widely available reissues of "Agartha" and "Pangaea", finally, please! Oh, just in case, I'm not talking of Proper Rekkids, dig?
  12. Yeah, wanted to mention that, too ...noticed it on various classical box sets I got this year (the Leon Fleisher Album Collection, the Verdi at the Met box). Others (Decca, UMG) just state "Made in the EU". As long as we don't have to find out it's Romanian kids doing child labor and stuff, I'd not be bothered too much ... hey, after all for all the chuch of "i" crap you all are using some lives were sacrified, too ... you wanted globalization, now there you got it
  13. Happy Birthday, Rolf! Hope you're doing fine!
  14. Thanks, that's good to know! And it was indeed those trio cuts I did remember from one of the older CDs - so no overlap for once, nice!
  15. Wow, that one's considerably pricier over here! I also got the cheapo Mozart box and love that - don't think I need the big one though, but then beyond Mozart I've not heard much Perahia at all yet.
  16. It seems that their current "line" is to release albums or sessions in their entirety. The collections a la "Calypso Blues", while apparently still in print, stem from a previous reissuing program. Yes, that's what I think - but I still find it a silly thing to change such a strategy after several fine reissues (they also had nice booklets!) Anyway, glad they're going on! I'll skip the Bahnhof, I guess, but will want the trio (though I've got to double check about that first, too).
  17. Very, very sad.
  18. I guess you might think I'm being smug now, but if you're really into the dissonant, experimental stuff, I think your list is flawed to start with You won't get too far there with Dolphy, and hardly anywhere with Elvin or Tyner. You could try thinks like the Parker/Guy/Lytton, Peter Brötzmann (with Schlippenbach and Bennink), Derek Bailey etc. But that would all be beyond the narrower scope of what's usually referred to as jazz (and in some folks' opinion probably way beyond even the broadest scope). Anyway, with Ayler, I'd try the blow-outs from Cleveland with Frank Wright joining in (available on the "Holy Ghost" box), with Ornette ... not sure he gets very dissonant, maybe "Skies of Europe"? , with Taylor, why not try the larger bands stuff, like "Winged Serpent"?
  19. I like that! But then I have no comparison as I don't know anything else so far. Guess I'll just let the order run and see it if comes through or not.
  20. Well, the thing is, if you don't know the author, the stars are meaningless ... somebody's * may be my * * * * * - same applies to poster "rankings"
  21. okay ... guess I'll mul it over for a while and maybe cancel my order then ... and I guess I'll take a pass on the Hantaï, too
  22. Mahall is fine ... but he could try and strive for a bit more variety -- like he could start making use of any kind of change of loudness/volume, when I heard him in person, he was mostly working a range from ff to fff ... he might in fact be the second guy after Satchmo to think pp means "pound plenty"
  23. slightly cheaper on amazon.fr (€ 30.51) www.amazon.fr/Sämtliche-Aufnahmen-Diverse/dp/B00EO7XQ2E guess this could be great! btw seems I was a minute too late for the Sweelinck - the order is still open but expected to deliver in mid december only edit: the darn link keeps disappearing! one more try: >link< contents: CD1 ARCANGELLO CORELLI | CONCERTO DE NOËL & SONATES CD2 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS CD3 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH | SONATE A FLAUTO, VIOLIN E BASSO CD4 DOMENICO SCARLATTI | 22 SONATES POUR CLAVECIN CD5 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH | CONCERTOS POUR CLAVECIN CD6 JOHN BULL | DOCTOR BULL’S GOOD NIGHT CD7 GIROLAMO FRESCOBALDI | PARTITE & TOCCATE CD8 GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN | ESSERCIZII MUSICI
  24. Out of the albums that you mentioned, which would you say are the least structured? San Francisco, probably, or rather the bonus album therein. But plenty of stuff on those in your list is pretty structured (Dolphy and Tyner for one, and Ornette's c major music, too, really). Donauseschingen certainly is a good suggestion, too! I don't see "lack of structure" as a point of interest, rather how structure (or form) is used, how tradition is being expanded and stretched into new areas (which is maybe why "Mama Too Tight" is my favourite Shepp, you can hear Ellington in there ... and which is why ultimately I prefer Mingus or Dolphy or Ornette to, say, Charles Gayle, Frank Wright and others that are more on the berserk end of the spectrum. As for "the more dissonant ..." - different genre, but try some Phill Niblock (make sure no animals are harmed, though).
