Well, the horse is alive in that Mr. Uehlinger prefers to release some new music rather than reissue what has been out (and can be found, I guess, if you really need it ... although it might be very pricy, but if there's real need ...). Can't blame him for that. But regardless I'd sure wish for some reissues, there's lots of stuff I never had a chance to hear that I'd love to hear (as opposed to I "need" to hear it ... there's no need, just as there's no entitlement). The money I talked of above was meant as: talk him into doing those reissues on the base of donating him a few thousand bucks ...

I'd definitely not hold my breath on any Adderley box ... I don't think Concord/Fantasy and Universal proper recordings were ever mixed on any of those albums box sets. felser, I assume the ones you meant were the French complete masters, of which five were released: Bechet, Armstrong, Parker, Holiday, Fitzgerald ... the ones I had in mind were the Italian ones, which mostly stem from Fantasy holdings, like the Complete Prestige Albums by Coltrane, Rollins, Dolphy, Miles, the Complete Riverside Albums by Monk, Evans etc. (those are not reissues of the previous US box-sets, but instead the just contain the actual leader albums, so the 8CD Rollins set misses quite a few things compared to the previous 7CD Rollins Complete Prestige Recordings set) ... but they also re-did the "Early Ellington" 3CD set, the Brownie EmArcy box, the Bird and JATP Verve boxes and some more.

Universal is doing some similar sets, but it seems they all come out of Italy (and they include Concord/Fantasy material, as Universal is their distributor in Euorope). Seems like those have all been EU public domain type of material, haven't they? I have the Parker, am aware of the Fitzgerald and a couple of others. Yes, I guess so. There are sets by Billie Holiday, Clifford Brown and others ... in classical they do some non-PD stuff, too.

Oh, I'd LOVE that Capitol box! Can't keep up the pace with the japanese reissues of those, but at least go some .... but a few seem to be real rare and out only in blogosphere, if at all ... who owns the EMI jazz catalogue now, Universal? Does that include all the other "holdings" (Capitol, Blue Note, United Artists, Roulette, Roost, Colpix, FM, etc)? Guess with Universal there's less of a chance than there'd have been with Sony, but still ... nice idea for sure! And yeah, I'm really looking forward to exploring the Hancock box. I know a mere six albums so far. Hope I can indeed pick it up tomorrow afternoon!

Listening to the Harnoncourt "Creation" right now ... starts out wonderfully! Guess, I too am more partial to this piece than to "The Seasons", after all. Some weird things happen still (like jpgs getting centred all of a sudden when you hit the "backwards delete" button whilst typing), but mostly it's good now. Anyway, I always have Firefox open in the background too, often comes in handy.

Luckily, most parcels that start out with DHL in Germany get handed over and delivered by regular Swiss Post ... no idea why sometimes they don't. DHL really can't compete here, no way. I'd not even blame the people actually carrying out stuff, I assume their work conditions are beyond horrid.

I know, but there are no packstations over here ... they're just darn slow and totally unreliable with regards to second delivery (they just don't show up in the slot or even on the day you were asking for). Stuff being sent back is a nuisance! Happened once to a private parcel and that was a huge gaffe on all sides that could never be cleared up ... at least the parcel made it back and on second attempt to me, then (DHL again on the German side, but Swiss Post took over - which is the usual procedure, not sure why this one is beign delivered by DHL at all - I assume it's the Hancock box anyway, DHL doesn't even allow you to know what country the parcel is coming from ... totally no info whatsoever!)

Hm, no, I find "Messiah" pretty gripping on CD (the Christie being my preferred version so far), but the Haydn just sort of passes by (I'm listening to Gardiner's 1990 "Seasons" right now), but there are wonderful parts in it. (sorry, mixed up Seasons and Creation!)

Mine is waiting with crappy DHL ... what lousy service they offer ... I'll pick it up myself, don't trust them so sing that "if it gets lost we aren't responsible" clause for the second delivery option ... really, what are they, do they even want to deliver anything? Anyway, this took a loooooooong time to arrive and I can only pick it up Monday now (at regular post, I'd have picked it up this morning, but DHL is oooooooooooooh soooooooooooooooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow).

btw, David, I got the Harnoncourt versions of both in this box (it was even a bit cheaper when I bought it): http://www.amazon.de/Sacred-Music-Edition-Arnold-Schoenberg/dp/B002S3BINU/ The box includes the regular editions, jumbo jewel cases with rather pagey booklets, not just some cheapo slimcases - but it needs lots of space, and its innards (thick cardboard, actually, kind of a frame where to put in the jewel cases) were thrashed in mine, but I don't care much, all jewel cases were intact.

coulnd't say I'm very familiar with both works, but the ones I've got are: The Creation - Karajan (live 1965) also got the 2003 Harnoncourt but unplayed yet (review 1, review 2), and the Bruno Weil in the Vivarte box, also unplayed yet The Seasons - Gardiner The Seasons - Harnoncourt I guess the only one I'm a wee bit familiar is the Karajan above ... but I'm slowly getting more into Haydn ... The Harnoncourt is of course the same as the one Larry already pointed the way to a review of.

Oh well, send him some money and he'll surely be glad to do more reissues ... and no, by 2045, he'll be gone and the label with him, as it seems.

I like doing that, when it makes sense financially (meaning I don't pay substantial extra), but with the recent raise of overseas shipping, it doesn't sound like that smart an idea ... 40$ for two discs isn't prohibitive, but still on the pricey end of the spectrum. Thanks bichos, might order from jpc, then ... got to get some classical stuff from there anyways, but nothing that couldn't wait a moment ... I'd love to hear the Jacquet real soon, though! (And the Duke Pearson, too!)

Yes indeed. That's established now, no more need for any rumours, we've had enough for the next three years anyway! There's a short note by Mark Wilder on each album, where he says something about sources used and what was needed to make them sound as much like the pristine original mono LPs they used as a benchmark.
