Palm ... yeah, a nice set of Jef Gilson music, too!

Happy Birthday, Jim!

True - quoted wiki which has the wrong label in the listing (but the right one once you open the pages on the respective album) - weird.

Yes, in this case it's not PD labels fault, of course! And there, even though the "they stole it and so will I game" is surely going on, it STILL seems feasible ... Fresh Sound for one is going strong, and all the satellites keep popping up and going "boof" as they have for a decade or so now. Not sure what that tells us though. As for streaming being crap ... I tend to generally agree, but when it comes down to music consumption nowadays, with smartphones, mp3 players, computers with crappy soundcards and cheapo built-in speakers ... I'm not sure it matters that much. Sometimes I just hook up my notebook to the amplifier when playing concerts found on youtube, or when listening to an org BFT or something like that ... and it doesn't bother me too much. I guess this "streaming being crap"-thing is one that really applies to those with stereos they invested thousands of any hard currency in - and those are a very small minority.

Well, I paid around 60 or 70 € for an in-shop copy of the Waldron/Lacy 4CD set ... that was the regular price around here back then. And sure I've been doing some complaining about crazy prices here, but then in the end it's all good. If all those who "have" "Hum Dono" and "Zodiac" would actually step up and buy real copies, we might indeed have seen real reissues of those long ago (guess what? this also works the other way 'round ... when a label does a reissue and no one buys it, they won't do the next one they had been planning ...) So yeah, I'm pleading guilty of grabbing OOP stuff when I can ... but whenever I get a chance to right the wrong (the wrong being - in most cases - not the label not putting it out, the wrong being me "having" it even though I shouldn't), I am very happy to do so. If there were thousands in that boat, we might still get more jazz reissues ... but it seems it's a pretty small and un-crowded boat, alas. (And no, I'm no better than others ... I've got other shortcomings, I'm sure!)

That's what I meant, actually ... no need for the Riversides (and the Riverside/Capitol/Landmarks), those were all covered, I think? A 1964.-1970 set would be it ... even better if they could throw in the final ones on Milestone (which I've still not heard, shame on me).

Never hera dof that Lacy, nor of Alan Davie ... but I'd be in for the d'Silva, Wilen and Taylors, for sure! And I throw in the Oxleys and Rileys that were on CD but have vanished, too. I guess I'd get each and any of those in your list! But "in the real world", there won't be no Marte Röling Fontanas, I assume? The Konitz Verve would have been a charming Mosaic, also the Giuffre Verve, but the crappitycrapirates have pretty much outruled those, I'm afraid ... alas! on the McCoy! Add Freddie Roach Blue Notes to that. As for Cannonball, I'd love a huge sucker, like the Columbia/Sony Herbie Hancock box! Warts and all... :tup so, why have all the quote headers disappeared? they were there before i hit "post" ... ah, well ...

the James Brown x-mas stuff (singles) can be found spread over a few of those great 2CD sets ... some of it is pretty fun, actually ... (I think there's also a one disc set pulling it all together, but that would be too much of a good thing for me).

happy birthday Gheorghe!!

Happy Birthday! When pounding them keys, always remember that pp means "pound plenty"! -
I went for the EMI Wagner box ... seems Domingo is intelligible on his two operas ... and generally the most appealing thing about the DG box to me was the inclusion of librettos, but just for the sake of that I really didn't feel like buying it Had doubts about the EMI, too ... haven't started exploring any of it yet ... but got another big sucker, the Solti box, which seems to contain one of the best ever "Rings" (I've also got the Furtwängler around, the 1953 one (Radio Italiana) ... and then one more, the "Great Operas from the Bayreuth Festival" (Decca, but recorded for Philips) which is mostly Sawallisch, but also has the Levine "Parsifal", which seems to be one of the not-to-miss Wagner recordings. In addition, there's also a "Great Operas" or "Great Recordings" box from Sony, in the style of their Verdi box (which I got), but that one didn't appeal to me as much either (neither did, btw, the Verdi box released by EMI - there I went for the Sony, the Sony/Met, the Great Operas from La Scala by DG ... and although that one has three of the six Abbados, I guess I'll also get the Abbado box ... as well as the very recent Domingo Verdi box ... and hey, I've actually listened to plenty of the Verdi already, and am enjoying it a lot). Not sure when the day for Wagner will come ... not too soon, I think.

Doesn't do anything for me, sorry to say ... had some vague expectations, but thought it was way too ... calculated. Seemed like a sound business plan that outdid the expectations.

Took me quite a while to get hip to this label ... had a few (Bunk Johnson, George Lewis) discs, then got more and more, as the 20s recommendations thread here grew bigger. Great discs that are intriguing documents, too ... quite an achievement indeed! r.i.p. George Buck, and thanks for everything.

Seems I'm about the last one here willing to cut Mr. Uehlinger some slack ... honestly, even if he did stop releasing new stuff and kept bringing on those in-demand reissues ... do you really think he could make a good living from that? I think it's the music business that's a joke, the music stores are worse than a joke around here (and have been for close to ten years by now), and the attitude of quite some consumers (I can get a PD Blue Note reissue for 4€, why should a Hat disc cost 15? It's worth only 4€, since that's what the other disc goes for! Oh, and I can get it for free in the internets anyways ...) is a joke, too - and a bad one, at that. So, bottom line: if it's not feasible to even do those small batches of 3000 reissues because there's just not enough interest, what do you expect? (And yeah, I think even the Braxton would last for a few years ...)
-
I've been eyeing that ... checking options, ebay (from multikulti) makes most sense. Thought it was OOP already! Anyway, I'm not much of a fan of such absolutist statements, with all due respect. The same could be said about any list that doesn't include the Brötzmann/Wels 5CD set released early in the year on Trost. Would be just as true - and just as silly.
-
Yay, could need three more rare ones for sure!
-
Got a rather long list this year ... lots of good stuff. Still waiting for some (the Jacquet/Parker and Pearson Uptowns, the Bud Powell Birdland 1957, the Kidd Jordan from NoBusiness) and some have just arrived (Parker/Guy/Lytton and Melodic Art-tet on NoBusiness, the Nicole Mitchell on Delmark). Will try and post a list by the very end of the year.

hum ho ... still a bit too expensive if it's just about a handful of albums ... here's a link: http://www.amazon.de/Impulse-50/dp/B005ORVN1O/

And Helen Merrill, too (thanks Jim!) - those Milestone albums are among my very favourites!
-
I don't see the rationale behind 664 and 676 ... the four disc set already omitted a track (with Rava added, I think?) that I'm probably never going to hear ... But it's good to see "Garden" and "Willisau (1991)" still on the list! (701 and 702 are both friggin' great, but I have the previous editions, so ...)
-
And the great 1959, 1961 and 1963-1965 recordings with Paul Desmond on Warner Bros. and RCA, and his Pacific Jazz dates, Jazz Guitar and Good Friday Blues - The Modest Jazz Trio. Forgot Desmond. Have edited post. He not only recorded with Desmond in the period you mentioned, but also after 1962. I know. I've got the discs! And you all forgot Jimmy Giuffre ... some fabulous music there - including "Traditionalism Revisited" by Bob Brookmeyer!

Sony Issues Bob Dylan CDs to Extend Copyright
king ubu replied to Brad's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Weird with this new one ... seems there are fairly many copies around in Germany - and many seem to think this was it - but what's with that Dec. 10 release date that all of a sudden turned up? This whole practice of Sony's is pretty silly ... the new set (all info on wiki) omits tracks from the sessions/concerts covered that already saw official release (i.e. on Bootleg Series 1-3) so you pay premium money and don't even get complete sessions ... you get some moronic music business attempt to save, well, what exactly? The stuff is already floating around, much or most of the 1963 seems to have been bootlegged long time ago ... why not release it officially, design a cheapo sub-series of the Bootleg Series that is probably selling pretty well anyways? -
Very, very sad news. A favourite ... if he'd died fifty years ago he'd already have been a giant. Amazing what albums he helped create in the fifties only ... and there was lots to follow after! Thank you for all the fine music.
