I think I disagree re: better than the Blue Note recordings. Somehow, to my ears, from all the official Bud of those years, the BN always comes up first! And I don't think this live recording is much of a contender, really. Sure it's different, and yeah, not enough Bud with horns (but then he didn't need no horns anyway) ... but still ... will give it a spin again soon though. Who knows, it might grow on me a bit.

Great post, Mr. Sangrey! Frankly that Russell album was never really a favourite (give me Outer Space! And Five Spot! And Ezz-thetics and the other Riversides, of course!) but that one Coltrane solo ... indeed! That would be very, very weird! These Universal Italy sets do nothing but repackage OJCCDs to my best knowledge. Guess it's just a mistake on discog's end. The scan from amazon suggests so, too: Can't find any official tracklist though (checked www.universalmusic.it/jazz/ and www.jazzecho.de, the official website of Universal Germany, which lists some of these Italian boxes, but not the Coltrane set). That's a great price, 54,99 euros! I think you only get it for that price from JPC (which is a fine shop), Amazon doesn't even seem to list this 2012 reissue. It's indeed cardboard sleeves in a cap-box, but unlike many of those reissues, it holds a real booklet. Me, I'm rather tempted to go for the 12 albums box to have the stuff in LP sequence again, but that would be the third time buying most of the music and there's plenty of other stuff to check out, really
-
Ha ha, like i said, i definitely should have checked here first before making my purchase. I definitely won't fight you on this, as objectively the 16 disc set is probably going to suit most people better and at this stage i don't have either set to compare. The booklet will definitely be a plus for some, i prefer jewel cases to cardboard sleeves but cardboard sleeves definitely aren't a deal breaker for me. Other than that i can't comment on the sound (i'm actually quietly hoping that they are the same) and it's worth noting that the 12 disc set only covers the leader dates, one album per disc, as opposed to the complete 16 CD set that covers all the side man stuff too. I figured the 12 CD set would be seen as a less favourable option but i think it's good to have it documented in this thread for the sake of future searchers, even if they it's just as a warning not to get it! I have and dig the Miles prestige stuff with Coltrane, bringing up Blue Train reminded me of another reason why i previously never explored Coltrane's Prestige leader discs = Blue Train has never been a favourite of mine. My guess is they both use the old versions (assuming the ones on the OJCCDs and the old huge 16 CD box were one and the same). Not a problem in my ears, never thought any old Fantasy CD sounded bad, really! And having the album configuration is defintely a good thing, too ... but I very much like the three thematic sets, they're very nicely done, good notes, nice design and all ... and I do like to have the music in chronological order, too! So I am tempted to get the 12 disc set, too ... but then I did own those old OJCCDs for many years and mostly passed them on when I got the three box sets, so I kinda feel like I know the albums, too, having played many of them countless times! I started Coltrane with Miles (Workin') and "Blue Trane" and some of the Atlantic albums ("My Favourite Things", "Ole" - the Heavyweight box then was my first jazz box set when it was out brand new) ... and then went in both directions from there ... the album with Tadd Dameron, "The Cats", "Traneing In", "Soultrane" and "Settin' the Pace" were early acquisitions, probably had them before getting many of the Impulse albums (and there I opted for the 8CD set with the collected studio recordings of the classic quartet ... later on went for the Deluxe Editions, too, and got some more releases, too, wherever there was any bonus material to find). Anyway, to me the notion of Trane not being "there" may fit some of his solos on those long Miles dates for Prestige, but after that, it's all good ... and even with Miles, where he's struggling, it's fascinating to witness since you do get an idea of what he wants to do, where he wants to go (he's, uhm, just not "there" yet - at least not all the time, but often he is).

Chu Berry & Dizzy Gillespie Mosaics now running low
king ubu replied to alankin's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No clue about timing out either ... might just not be feasible to manufacture another 1000 or so if it sells too slowly (2000 in 6 years ... including all the enthusiast pre-and early orders ... do another 1000 when the license runs 10 years and sales have slowed down?) -
Chu Berry & Dizzy Gillespie Mosaics now running low
king ubu replied to alankin's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well I wouldn't know for sure, but with sets going on backorder and then being re-pressed again, I assume the fact that sets numbered in the 2000 range being sold at the end of the run means that there haven't been 5000 sets manufactured. Seems a fairly logical thought to me -
Just in case - and to get back to mere profane facts - this one is a much better option than the 12 albums set depicted above: http://jpc.de/jpcng/mobile/detail/-/art/John-Coltrane-1926-1967-The-Prestige-Recordings/hnum/1988951 It comes with a thick booklet, whilst the albums box probably has none whatsoever (I have the three thematic sets and kept some OJCCDs I had before ... but I've seen the 16 CD set and it looks good). I'm a little bit amazed by some of the statements here ... how can you go into jazz for a while without hearing Coltrane at least on Miles' Prestige albums or "Blue Train"? And why should the later be an undisputed classic when it's from the midst of the period when Coltrane wasn't *there* yet?
-
Yes, yes, yes! Ricky, I don't think there was ever any box not closing? And some have booklets of 32 or 36 pages ... guess that should be enough to accomodate your notes?
-
Bill Holman, too and Chuck Flores Lennie Niehaus Paul Horn, if he counts ...
-
Just a standard description, I assume ... I copy/pasted this straight from the e-mail I got.
-
Hm, but these are nevertheless Prestige 7000 albums and SHM CDs ... different series, or only part of what you meant? Obviously I don't have the link you're looking for, though.

Sounds indeed great! Guess I'll beat myself for overspending (and fairly recently, too) on a few things that will be included - but hey, such is life, and this is Pops, so I'll want it!
-
HA, that's funny! I was scrolling through this thread very quickly (hoping to find Chuck's follow-up to his "yes" regarding thoughts about Bennie Wallace) ... and when this cover appeared, I immediately thought: "Oh, a Ran Blake album!" ... never saw the cover before, needless to say
-
I think actually - to get back to Lon's point, too! - I like it that much because of the tunes it features! Those two Dietz/Schwartz songs are wonderful! And then you get an interesting JMac original, plus a highspeed outro ... but it's the two Dietz/Schwartz tunes I love! But as for tunes, yeah ... "Why Was I Born?" on "Burrell & Coltrane", "Violets for Your Furs" and "Wihle My Lady Sleeps" on "Coltrane", Alonzo Levister next to Friedrich Hollander and Irving Berlin on "Traneing In" ... and "Soultrane" is just plain marvellous, five rarely heard ones (well, maybe not "Good Bait", but then who actually plays Tadd Dameron's music?). There are indeed many wonderful songs to hear (and some good tunes, too ... even those throwaway ones Waldron seems to often have made up at or just before the sessions are memorable in many cases!)
-
"Settin' the Pace" is a big favourite here ... probalby a tiny bit ahead of "Soultrane", which again is a tiny bit ahead of "Traneing In". The debut album "Coltrane" is fine, too ... but as Mr. Sangrey said: buy with confidence! Of the jams, one I've been very fond of since my early teens is "The Cats" - a mighty fine band with Idrees Sulieman (heard way too rarely!), Trane, Kenny Burrell, Doug Watkins, Louis Hayes, Tommy Flanagan (who gets a nice trio tune, "How Long Has This Been Goin' On" - omitted, alas on the three thematically ordered boxes, as are a few other tracks where Trane lays out ... one from the Draper album, one or two from "Cattin'" with Lady Q ... and a whole lot of stuff from the two Gene Ammons albums, where the omission is okay in my book, but where a lone tune is missing to complete albums, I find it silly). The session with Q and Wess is fine, too (Wess wins!), and I'm also fond of the Interplay album ... it's kinda fun to hear Chambers and Watkins opposite each other (I prefer the later, I think - wonderful sound, perfect time, good pitch ... sure, Chambers was an m-f, but Watkins had it down!). Oh, and one I've always loved a lot is "The Last Trane" ... it has the best (by far!) track of the trio date that was issued as half of "Lush Life", a long alternate of the blues that easily beats the master. That trio idea was kinda trying to emulate Sonny Rollins, I assume? Or did it just grow out of Garland arriving late, I don't remember ... Earl May surely wasn't the right bassist to pull it and Taylor probably not the right drummer, either ... but that long blues is effin' good, May is up to the task there! The long session with Wilbur Harden is lovely, too ... so is the Burrell & Coltrane album (actually that one's a bit darker than just lovely, it's a real beauty, and that goes deeper than being "lovely"). And talking Harden, there's the Savoy material which is better than the Prestige date, I find ... there was 2CD reissue pulling it all together (I think OK didn't even manage to omit anything for some weird reason - our luck!). I've never been that fond of "Dakar", I'm afraid, sound a bit like a gimmick to my ears ... the album with Q ("Cattin'") has some very good moments but also some fluffs by Q ... but then who cares, Waldron is great there and - finally! - there's a good drummer that doesn't just make you feel good but has actual good time, too (Ed Thipgen!). Also when I want Trane in a tenor jam, I rather go for "The Dealers"/"Wheelin' and Dealin'" than for "Tenor Conclave" (Art Taylor's rushing time is at its most extreme there, things get rather hectic in some spots). It's fun of course, but the stuff with Wess/Q (and also the BN with Griffin/Mobley) is better (the later has much more bite of course, which depending on how I feel on a particular day is a good thing). The long sessions with Garland leading a quintet with Trane and Donald Byrd are highly enjoyable though ... had all of the albums separately before (I actually had most of them before, not "Dakar", "Stardust", "Bahia" and "Standard Coltrane" though ... but I had a disc pulling together all the Harden tracks from the later three).
-
I had a "kind spirit" there ... providing me with most Barney albums that are hard to find - they seem to turn up in second hand stores in Paris Still some gaps, but none I think that I need to close at all cost ... I have access to the material, but would it be reissued, I'd be amongst the first to get hard copies! (Bandini, the Cerri, one or two late ones including the excellent Ruwenzori ... and obviously Zodiac, too!)

Not a big surprise that this one times out long before it would have actually sold out ... too bad this seems to happen so often in recent years! -

Thanks David. This sounds better than anything (all rumours!) I've heard about Silver in the past several years. No matter what, props to Horace Silver and eternal gratitude for all the wonderful music he's given to us.

The cover is pretty atrocious, too ... but this does seem to be down my alley!
