Wow, that's shocking news - horrible. I had a lengthy chat with him when I heard him play in duo with Joëlle Léandre in Paris in front of a handful of (lucky!) people at Sept Lézards ... since there was virtually nobody there that Friday night, they invited me to come back (for free) on Saturday. Here's my recollection from a while later, but with a much fresher memory than I have now: Here's the link to the programme of Oct 2007: http://www.7lezards.com/programme/10-2007.htm Friday night after the concert, around midnight or so, while taking a casual stroll back to my generous host brownie's place, right through the center or Paris, the atmosphere was amazing - France hosted the rugby world cup that year and had just beaten the Kiwi's 20 to 18. spinning this very good disc right now:

Mingus "Complete Debut Recordings" set
king ubu replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Actually I don't think ordering from amazon.it necessarily means the order will ship from Italy. Rather it will ship from the European warehouse that has the item in stock ... but then these Universal Italy releases don't usually seem to be widely available elsewhere, so they may be the exception in that respect and very likely will be shipped from Italy. I for one have ordered from amazon.it many times - when there was an issue, they were friendly and fast in answering (very much like amazon.fr and very much *unlike* amazon.de), so I'd say buy with confidence. -
I've not played that for a long time, but remember it being messier/looser in a not that good way than the new one. (Referring to "Brotherhood Suite", didn't catch the post in between) Somehow I think Cherry's no big deal any more in general ... which is somehow sad. The long story in The Wire a few months back certainly had me reconsider, although I've not yet started to actually re-listen to his music (I've got much of the early stuff, but less of the later).

Gave a first listen yesterday (it just arrived) - sounds pretty good I'd say, but I'm no expert regarding that era of Cherry's career ... have had the Sonet 2CD set from Universal for many years though ... good stuff! First part (1968) is the Rosengren combo of that day with Cherry and Maffy Falay, second is a similar band with Cherry, Falay, Koverhult, Okay Temiz and prob. Rolf Ohlsson on bass ... all details here: there's a blurb on Caprice's website, also available in english: http://statensmusikverk.se/capricerecords/artikel/live-in-stockholm/?lang=en

Any recommendations regarding other YAL releases? And any hints on where to get them? I've been meaning to check out a few for years, but they never showed up anywhere. Don't even remember where I found the Lateef/Freeman, probably in some weird sales bin, where some obscure stuff would show up ... I miss those bins!

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
king ubu replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm not sure about the Hackett ... it's one I've been mulling over for years ... guess I might give in. For the first time, thanks to a pair of big orders in the past months (one paid for by my employer, many thanks! generous gift after having worked there for 10 years), I'm for the first time in a position where I actually have most sets around - just five or six left at this time (among them the Lunceford which I want badly, not sure I can wait for Mosaic to get it back in stock, but it's still cheaper for me than using jazzmessengers.com, which still seems to have it) - anyway, not showing off or anything here, it's just that I kinda caught up with where many of you have been for years, and it feels comfortable to be there (I have to confess though there are quite a few boxes around that remain unplayed or virtually unplayed as of yet - but with those, usually I knew a certain amount of music beforehand, so the curiosity was a bit lower than with those that are brand new - the Hackett would be one of those ... I've heard him, but none of these albums). -
That's by far the best idea here (not that I knew that lady, but I'm sure she hands out coffee proper ... holy crap, 'merikins and their "coffee" ... microwave?!? gimme a break! )

The Crusaders is great! Also the live albums reissued (mostly, one's missing, I think) on single discs. And the Dizzy has been on the list for a while. -
Good, not great, I'd say.

Happy Birthday, Clifford Thornton!

Happy Birthday, Clifford! -
Yeah, "Flight to Jordan" is great! Speaking of cut-off dates ... with Stanley T., mine was mid sixties for quite a while ... great to love those Duke P. sessions, though, but still haven't payed proper attention to the CTIs - thanks Mr. Sangrey!

My first leader release of his, and stil very much a favorite of mine, was the "Up at Minton's" 2CD set (with Parlan's trio plus Grant Green).

Thanks - that's weird enough, Universal being involved in the distribution of BYG material ... but it really doesn't look like any ownership is at play. Sorry for derailing this thread, I'll keep my mouth shut now.

As usual though I can't find any trace (other than a PDF from June announcing its release) on universalmusic.it -

according to this site it also contains the later "Right Now" album: http://www.ibs.it/disco/0600753426081/charles-mingus/leader-debut.html -
Sorry, didn't see that request ... but the thing about Fuel 2000 being an official label is really news to me! Their website looks like a wreck though, blank links everywhere. But really, are we talking about the same thing? http://www.discogs.com/label/10743-Fuel-2000 says there: "A division of Varèse Sarabande" (*deleted the additional line forging conspiracies here*) And you don't really want me to believe those BYG reissues of records by Shepp or the Art Ensemble were overseen by Universal or officially licensed? my CD of "Reese and the Smooth Ones" certainly doesn't say nothing that would make me believe such a thing - rather it confirms the Varèse Sarabande affiliation ... so they're from Universal City which is home of the Universal Studios ... they're also being distributed by Universal, but what does that really mean? I don't think it means those BYG records belong to Universal?

Not sure I flat out agree .... I did get the Conn 2CD set (gave it a mere one or two spins so far though) ... but there's some live material from the late sixties that shows his band still hat it going. But then those were the days when not even Cannonball could record with just his working band on a regular basis any longer ... so those Silver bands with Bennie Maupin from 1968/69 or the Breckers from 1973 or Tom Harrell (with Bob Berg 1976, with Larry Schneider the year after) remained undocumented on record mostly (or completely, I don't really know for sure). Fifteen, probably even ten years ago I'd have agreed though and would have said: no need for any Silver post "Cape-Verdean Blues" and "The Jody Grind". Today, I want to hear more and try and trace the ways the music of Silver and others took, after the enshrined period (roughly mid 50s to mid 60s) passed. How about Art Blakey though? There, I confess, I begin to lose interest gradually during the Limelight years ... the album with Gilmore is a promise not kept, though "Soul Finger" and "Buttercorn Lady" are pretty darn good ... and then there's that 1968 sextet with Billy Harper, Julian Priester and Bill Hardman ... tail end stuff, before Blakey started dabbling with electric pianos and stuff, too ... later on, I only have the odd album here and there and never really felt like changing that situtation so far (though I would have run to see him live if I had a chance, even at the stage where I felt like, "I don't need nothing post 'Free for All'" ... catching these guys live is something I always try and do when I can).
-
Really now? I always thought it was one of those shady Charly-associated ones - it came and went that fast at least ... all I have is "Student Studies" by Cecil Taylor - fabulous music in less so sound.
-
Fuel 2000 was a Universal outfit?
-
Wasn't Alan Douglas always kind of a shady character himself? Not as far as I know. Okay, good to know. I've not bought many Fresh Sound releases in the past four or five years.

Don't they routinely put up such claims?

Actually, you sir, and several others on this board played a major role in me stopping to hold opinions like "I need none of Rollins' records from after the Impulse ones" or "Blue Mitchell after the period covered in the Mosaic is crap." Early on, I was focussing on Blue Note, OJCCDs (I didn't even know the difference between Prestige and Riverside back then, don't blame me, I was a kid and there was no internet just yet to find out ...), Impulse, some Atlantic ... with Coltrane, I stopped at "A Love Supreme" for quite some time, but rectified that eventually (I need all there is!), with Mingus I was looking a looooong time for "Mingus at Monterey" and "UCLA" (found vinyl of the former, the later I only got when Sue did that 2CD reissue) and thought I'd not need his later stuff. Frankly I'm still not holding the later stuff in as high esteem (I wasn't around when "Changes" came out and as a late-comer, they just don't do as much for me as the early stuff does), but I would not want to part with it all. But there are still artists where I have some kind of cut-off date. Jimmy Smith for one ... I have virtually all of his Blue Notes and many Verves, but from later on, it's just this and that, stuff that's been around and stuff that I really felt I needed. Chet Baker is a similar case ... most everything from the fifties I have, after that it gets scattered. Mulligan similar (though going into the sixties). But in many cases, it's more out of necessity that I don't have more stuff from (roughly) the seventies (might go back into the late sixties and on into the eighties). Take Xanadu ... that label looks great to me, but I have virtually nothing, since there's just not been anything around I could have bought. And frankly, there ware very few I really "follow" in the sense that I will get any new release right after it's out. Threadgill, maybe (though I really caught up with him only in the past few years). And a few younger ones like Colin Vallon, Elina Duni ... but with others I really love live (Malcolm Braff for instance), I've not heard a single disc doing them justice or catching the exitement of the live concert, so I don't really look for their stuff even though I consider myself a fan (that's some silly notion). I also do try to keep up with Stephan Oliva (thanks, brownie!), which isn't too easy. Labelwise, Mosaic really is the only one I watch with any regularity. There's just too much to follow all there is and it's often too annoying to get hold of stuff via various online outlets etc., so I just give up or get stuff occasionally, lumping some things together. For instance, I've been meaning to check out some new and recent stuff in pi for a year or so ... I might eventually order three or four, no matter if they're new or have been out for two or three years. I do still follow Bob Dylan though ... but again, if a year passes between a release and me buying it, that's not an uncommon thing to happen. And I do usually try and get an earful if Ry Cooder has something new around. Also I do follow our dear host, Jim Alfredson, usually even pre-ordering in this case (which I rarely ever do at all)

they'd be stealing from various generations of thieves, as is my understanding ... it's really a disgrace that there's no proper reissue of this material around at atll ...

pinned threads that just don't need to be

Frankly, I'd rather have the - most useful! - Mosaic discography thread pinned and some of those threads that come up on top always unpinned (what are you listening, best song you heard ...) -
