Hm, I guess I'll just stick with the three or four Double Deccas I've already got, as far as Ashkenazy goes (one is the Scriabin, and one as mentioned him conducting the Rach symphonies). Any particular recommendations of his as a pianist beyond that? I don't feel like I'm missing out on much (like, I don't feel like more Chopin and Beethoven), but is there anything that's generally accepted (whatever that means) as a classic?

Not miked that well, but on fire! The cut from "Jazz Wave" must be on the Mosaic, which was my first encounter with this amazing band - got to dig it up some day soon! Btw, is it just me or does late Getz (eighties) occasionally have some similarities with JoeHen? Sonically, rhythmically ... I can't really pin it down, but in the opener of "Pure Getz" that's spinning right now, I had to think back about Henderson.

That could be great! The concertos with Previn are the ones I've already got (plus the 2CD set with the 24 Preludes and the Piano Sonata No. 2, as well as the one with the Concertgebouw under Ashkenazy playing the three Symphonies - that, too, won't be included, of course). I never felt like going for the huge Ashkenazy Decca box, but this one is tempting indeed!

enjoying this thread a lot ... makes me want to pick up my saxophones again, too! here's a version akin to my first encounter with "Invitation" - very good one as the melody sticks easily once you've heard it:

Very cool video, thanks for sharing! Btw, it's my understanding the Basle disc isn't a boot. Fantastic disc!

Joe McPhee - Nation Time: The Complete Recordings

Didn't notice anything like this ... will gladly check if no others chime in, but probably won't come around 'til Saturday. -
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's no merit to early Swedish jazz ... (or to its counterparts in many other European countries). It's just that there's so much time to listen to stuff and there's so much on my real (and virtual/wishlist) pile and my priorities are different. As for going into the sixties, what little I've heard by the likes of Bernt Rosengren and his gang, Monica Zetterlund and very few others, I would definitely enjoy a taste or two more there, and these compilations could be a wonderful addition there! Steve, do they include english liners, too?

As far as info goes, have you tried this: http://old.visarkiv.se/jazzdisk_en.htm ? I know that ... but I have no interest in it there are hundreds and hundreds of discs around that need (well, I want!) to get a spin! Simply no need as there'd be no time for it, so I don't want to pay a cent there, it would just be wasted.

Kewl! Link works well, in english! Guess from Vol. 6 onwards, they'd be most interesting (before that, each European country seems to have had its own share of trad bands, dance orchestras, swing combos and big bands etc. ... so gar I never felt compelled to check out too much of that stuff on a larger scale ... some bits of French, a few things out of Germany and some Swiss stuff is more than enough for me there). They can be found on amazon's sites - but not exactly cheap (and as opposed to what the cover says for Vol. 10, you don't get "4 for 3", it's more expensive than any others).

It was her that spread this a while ago: www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/67430-joseph-jarman-seriously-ill/ (Why can't dumphones create working links when they're so smart?) -
Don't miss "Queen of the Organ" on Impulse! - some badass music on that one!

hm, also got disc 2 ... it's fabulous:

I've got the Vivaldi on four separate discs, but there's also this 4CD set (less than 16€ currently at amazon.it) I quite love this band ... but I overspend that much lately, damn ...

Very cool, many thanks Romualdo! Definitely need to get this box!

His discs were all over the place when I started frequenting music stores (their jazz corners mostly). While I did enjoy some acid jazz back then (Incognito mostly, but some other things as well, Urban Species for instance, also Buckshot LeFonque, Guru/Jazzmatazz, the Brand New Heavies), I don't think I ever consciously heard Jordan play, ever.

perusing romualdo's post above: 334 titles in the LP box 230 titles released in the CD series (including a few that were not on the LP box) 104 missing from the CD series (only 6 or 7 of those 104 are alternate takes) 243 in the new CD box 91 titles more in the LP box ... but since the new box adds a few things not in the LP box, it's probably some more (100?) assumption: those 100 are all alternate takes now what? the old CD series held plenty of alternate takes ... 97 master takes not on that CD series 243 titles in the new CD box 146 masters shared between the new CD box and the old CD series 84 takes from the CD series missing in the new box - all alternate takes? So, what's with the assumed ~100 and then the assumed ~84 alternate takes - what causes the gap? Hmmm ... and now where's this leading to, the road to nowhere? What did I forget? The new box is out of stock again everywhere by now, btw.
