Indeed they did - stuff like their Tubby Hayes box is most welcome. Guess I need the Harriott eventually, too ... granted I'd prefer more Dutton/Vocalion reissues (and hey, some of those might indeed have been surpassed before release by - other - PD reissues ... and hey again, that scenario hurts me when it's about small labels, call me sentimental, but I still think I made a point or two above that remain valid, even if we give the majors the finger, which I'm most ready to do). Not sure, wasn't the Spotlite set around for most of the time? In fact it might still be around:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000026QCO/ Now for the Savoys ...

I'd even guess they do ... and to flock the dead ol' mare some more, I don't disagree with anything Big Beat Steve says above (partly in reply to me), and I guess he actually knows What I was pointing out is how crappy the rock bottom of these cheapo labels is - and it was my understanding this thread was more about that than the okay to fine reissues often coming from Fresh Sound or Lonehill or others of the kind. I was talking' "27 original albums on 9 discs for 3 eurozlotys" and crappy Definitive boxes (such as the one that prompted this thread) and crappy Membran boxes ... those okay to fine reissues, I assume (I don't have that many of 'em and didn't run checks) don't use MP3 to start with. There's differences between PD labels and the quality of their product, and the mere fact that some of these ARE crap and the fact that I pointed that out does not mean I'm saying the ALL are crap.

Yup, that's why I often buy discs straight from the musician at gigs, whenever I have enough cash on me and they don't ask ridiculous prices, that is ... But re: "if people don't like these products they won't buy them", I think that is oversimplifying it quite a bit, since "these products" stop better product from being produced. Now you can argue "people don't want better product" and maybe you're right. But are wi in such dark times again, really?

Universal Music Italia box sets
king ubu replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's exactly what I meant re: PD. I don't see a profit-based corporation paying for something they don't have to. Not in this world, not in this time. And that would explain why it's a European reissue (instead of them just re-pressing the old Fantasy box, like they did with a few others, Wes M., Bill E. Riversides, I think? those where high-price editions) that has to be imported elsewhere (and actually shouldn't be sold in the US at all, I guess - but there it goes again ...). -
I don't think they leave it at that ... they "improve" by running filters and stuff ... and in the worst case, they use MP3 sources or damaged files (I think the Gigi Gryce 8 albums set has some of those? it was discussed here, a while ago).
-
But it would be nice if these legitimate thieves were in love with the music a bit more and trying a bit harder to deliver quality stuff, instead of just flunking and pretending in order to get our hard earned money ... my main beef with Definitive is really that they're the worst (at least this side of the pathetic "8 Classic Albums" sets). But as one of our good friends here often says: you get what you pay for

Universal Music Italia box sets

I guess it's essentially just a european scaled-down reissue of the old box ... probably european-only due to PD. And yeah, I guess indeed the new "Chronicle" might be the same. -

Here's what it says on the Coltrane box: (P) 2011 © 1991 Fantasy Inc. Prestige Records, Tenth & Parker, Berkley, CA 94710, All Rights Reserved. Made in the EU. LC 15025, Universal - Universal Music Group International. -

Universal Music Italia box sets

I just asked my friend - will report back when he replies. He bought the set from jpc.de (upon my recommendation), where they have a Concord blurb (the reduced price has been like that for months, but they say they don't have it in stock ... still worth a try I'd say): http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/art/John-Coltrane-1926-1967-The-Prestige-Recordings/hnum/1988951 -

I can ask someone about the Coltrane if no one here has it. -
... and almost certainly has! They might have added some MP3 compression in the lineage though ...

Yep, I think that Coltrane isn't coming from Italy, hence the inclusion in the note only. Not sure about the recent "Chronicle" ... I actually plan to get it, but haven't come around so far (I have all or most of the music, but having it in chronological order and in one place would be great). Regarding the Bird set, this was indeed recently reissued for the second time as a cheapo version - here's the link to the offering of the first one (rel. 2005): http://www.amazon.it/Bird-Complete-Verve-Bob-Dylan/dp/B000PMFUSK/ (Not sure what Dylan has to with it) The Pres (rel. 2006) and JATP (rel. 2007) are these: http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Studio-Sessions-One/dp/B000PMFUSU/ http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Jazz-Philharmonic-Verve-1944/dp/B000FDDYQY/ So that was the first chapter, but these seem to have been smaller editions. -
Universal Music Italia box sets
king ubu replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No, those were produced by Universal France - Complete Masters by Ella, Billie, Bird, Bechet and Satchmo (though with cut-off-dates in the case of Ella and Bechet, and I guess with Satch, too, though that one I don't have). Here's the thread on those: The dedicated website set up about these is still online, too: http://www.jazzmasters.fr -

damn, you were faster and I didn't double check before posting my own thread ... maybe a kind moderator can delete it? I'll reproduce my post here: Okay, so let's give this a shot ... please help complete the list! First, as far as I know, it all started with thrree genuine Universal sets that were reissued, with reduced booklets: Jazz at the Philharmonic 1944-49 Charlie Parker - Complete Verve Recordings Lester Young - Complete Verve Recordings There are long gone (they came and went pretty fast, a friend of mine got either the Young or JATP, but I've never seen it) - the Bird is back though! Then, there started to turn up a wealth of album-based sets, containing music that belonged to Fantasy, went on to Concord and was brought back by Universal, the European distributor or Concord: Chet Baker - Complete Riverside & Jazzland Albums John Coltrane - Complete Prestige Albums Miles Davis - Complete Prestige Albums Eric Dolphy - Copmlete Prestige/New Jazz Albums Duke Ellington - The Carnegie Hall Concerts Bill Evans - The Riverside & Milestone Albums Lee Konitz - Complete Milestone Albums Thelonious Monk - Complete Prestige Albums Thelonious Monk - All Monk: The Riverside Albums Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Albums also a few "partial" sets: Charles Mingus - Leader on Debut (new compilation in this form) Bill Evans - The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 Miles Davis - Steamin'/Workin'/Relaxin'/Cookin' Then, they went on exploring the Universal vaults some more: Count Basie - The Original American Decca Recordings Clifford Brown - The Complete EmArcy Recordings Duke Ellington - Brunswick & Vocalion 1926-31 (= Early Ellington, GRP) Bill Evans - Complete Bill Evans on Verve Billie Holiday - Complete Billie Holiday on Verve Keith Jarrett - The Impulse Years Charles Mingus - The Impulse Albums Bud Powell - Complete Bud Powell on Verve Ant as one of the latest, they're also bringing back (in spite of the album box listed above!) this one: Miles Davis - Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings A note on the Coltrane Prestige box: there's also a scaled down version of the Complete Prestige Recordings box around (the same friend has it and I saw it, it's pretty nice with a real booklet ... I guess it's the same deal as the new Chronicle set, which is also said to come with a real booklet) - I'd not go for the albums box! The albums sets, to my knowledge (I've only had the Rolins in my own hands) come with minimal booklets, the Bud Verve set has a minimal one, too, but the Brownie has the same as the original box had ... so it seems it's not handled the same way always (huge original booklets - JATP, Bud on Verve, prob. Billie on Verve - won't e included again). -
here's Bruyninckx' entry: ____________________________ Paris Jazz Concert- : same pers. "Théâtre de l'Olympia", Paris, May 13, 1961 The summit (*) Europe n°1 (F)710373/374 (CD) Yama (*) - Close your eyes (*) - Dat dere (*) - Round about midnight (*,+) - So tired (+) - My funny Valentine (+) - It's only a paper moon (+) - Noise at the attic (+) - Moanin' (+) - I didn't know what time it was (+) - Blues march (+) - Night in Tunisia (*,+) - Lost and found Laserlight 36128 (2-CD set) Kozo's waltz - unidentified title - The theme - Note : Entire concert also on RTE 1502. (*) These titles on Laserlight 36128-2 and (+) these on Laserlight 36158-2 (2-CD set) entitled "Paris Olympia 1961 (2nd concert)". ____________________________ And yes, you're probably right about the 2CD sets restoring ... what's on Vol. 3 (I just had a closer look, no more puzzlement) is the final cut of disc one of the first 2CD set/concert and the entirety of disc 2 - so if these 2CD sets restore the sequence, the single discs volumes had it all jumbled up! Vol. 1 above has the rest of disc one of the first set/concert and most of part 1 of the second 2CD set/concert, so I guess Vol. 2 has the final cut of that disc (It's Only a Papermoon) and all of disc 2 of the second set/concert (Noise in the Attic, Moanin', I Didn't Know What Time it Was, Blues March, Night in Tunisia).

Are there any box bargains currently available?

No, don't give on that one...keep it on your "must have" list! Wonderful set! Got lucky a few years back, finding the vinyl box for 30 something euros (a gamble, as it was an online order - but all was good). -

Don't think so ... the universalmusic.it site is messy ... but after all the discussion about these sets, we really should start a dedicated thread and try and put together a list in the opening post! -
seems to be true indeed: http://dothemath.typepad.com/dtm/2014/03/rip-ralph-penland.html

Bertrand, there were to 2 disc sets (that is in the Laserlight editions, the third on CD, I assume) ... this has been discussed elsewhere on this board a few weeks or months back. First concert (first CD edition conver displayed): http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-concert-olympia-may-13-1961-mw0000627538 Second concert (third CD edition cover displayed): http://www.allmusic.com/album/olympia-may-13th-1961-second-concert-mw0000534608 The second generation of CDs were all single ones (as far as I know) and looked like this - Vol. 1 of first concert: http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-olympia-5-13-61-pt-1-mw0000526637 I am puzzled though by this "Vol. 3", for which allmusic gives a tracklist that matches neither the "first concert" nor "second concert" 2CD sets: http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-olympia-5-13-61-pt-3-mw0000528131

I know I'm in a small minority here, but I love my rusty sucker! Shipping costs: https://www.amazon.it/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201349180#GUID-140AD14F-D4E3-4C52-A28A-09FF77344451__SECTION_BE58919656AD4E6EB58584FF8742C091 (I guess that would be 10€ then, or 15€? not sure how far they go, weightwise, with the initial 10€) -
Sad news. First heard Harewood on those great "Up at Minton's" recordings by Stanley Turrentine (with the mentioned Parlan trio and Grant Green). Always loved his touch!
