  1. I've started in order, and so far the early ones where Willem Breuker was involved are firecrackers; try 001, 007, 008, 009 and go from there.
  2. If you're interested in this material but can't (like me) swing at this box, about 35 of the ICP releases are on emusic.
  3. The Sviatoslav Richter box is now available from Amazon Germany for 57 euros plus change: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00GYHSYW4/ref=ox_ya_os_product That's quite cheap for 33 CDs. That disappeared pretty quickly!
  4. Afanassiev playing D. 960 on ECM should not be missed. And then there is Schnabel.
  5. Paul Bley arrived today, and with a sticker on the box "bonus disc". The bonus disc is "Not to Be a Star" Keshavan Maslak and Paul Bley. So it's really 10 albums in the box. Anybody else got this?
  6. I'm waiting for his Beethoven cycle to come out in a box.
  7. Furtwängler and especially Mengelberg are an acquired taste for many and I'm not sure they are the best to start with if, like the original poster, you don't know anything about Beethoven's symphonies. The lack of exposure in this case might help; someone who doesn't know what Beethoven's 7 "should sound like" will listen with an open mind. In any case, I believe it's worth spending a few minutes on the tube to find out.
  8. Also try Furtwangler and Mengelberg; happily with youtube these days you can actually try before you buy.
  9. Every day starting today until Dec. 24, 2 24-bit selections from HM and BIS are 50% off. I'm listening right now to Jorg Widmann and the Arcanto Quartet playing Mozart's clarinet quintet in A major. It's coupled with the D minor of the cycle of quartets dedicated to Haydn. Not bad. The other selection today is vol. 33 of Suzuki's Bach Cantata cycle. Also on sale is a very good complete solo piano Mozart set by Brautigam on the BIS label, about $37 for the whole thing.
  10. Got the e-mail about it yesterday, probably going to order soon. Did you notice at the bottom something saying "this email was sent to .... by Universal Music Group"? Also landed in my spam box because it came from mosaic@capitol.umusic-mail.com.
  11. Listening to the Lake set; wow, there is wonderful stuff in there! All in all, one of the most enjoyable boxes in this series so far for me.
  12. Bongos and/or congas. I like to play them while listening to music.
  13. Most of the Black Saint and Soul Note albums can be streamed in their entirety from the camjazz website.
  14. The amazons including resellers, discogs, ebay, emusic, hdtracks, destination-out for FMP catalogue downloads, eclassical.com, local used record shops, record shows...anywhere basically.
  15. It's on emusic.
  16. "un-American" jazz artists whose recordings I have appreciated lately: the Piet Noordijk quartet, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, Misha Mengelberg (with or without the ICP orchestra), Franz Koglmann, Gianluigi Trovesi, the Italian Instabile Orchestra, the Ganelin trio. All of them quite post bop.
  17. You'll like Steve Lacy's "Live at Sweet Basil".
  18. UK Amazon has this set for £39.99 (take off VAT) -> good buy for us in Australia - comes to approx Aus $66 ($3.50 per disc) That price is from a marketplace seller, so no VAT discount ( at least not for me in Canada).
  19. Cancelled my order for this after sampling some of the contents... From Empyrean Isles to Monster to Future Shock, what a shocking trajectory!
  20. Excuse my ignorance here, but why is it in general so hard to get rights to reissue material that is physically rotting somewhere in a vault? Is it artists estates asking for unrealistic sums of money? Is it the labels? Just curious.
  21. There are a few JSP boxes with Paramount material; I have the one that has about 100 blues tracks.
  22. Thanks for the tip; I hit preorder now and think about it later. It came to about 102 euro shipped to Canada.
  23. Pinholes shouldn't be a problem; try to see if can be read by any computer you and/or your friends and relatives have access to. If not, time to hit ebay/discogs/amazon/...
  24. As with most other things, there is a large discrepancy between theory and reality when it comes to copyright. For example amazon.com happily sells these 'illegal' versions of recordings under copyright (to major corporations) to U.S. customers. Considering how copyright holders are known to request take-down of infringing youtube items, but they seem to leave amazon.com do their thing, I'm wondering for example if say Sony has confidentially demanded and received some sort of royalties from every Armstrong Fremeaux set that amazon.com is selling. This might explain why Volume 5 is available directly from amazon.com for $53.01, while the marketplace low price is $19.90... I have the first 4 volumes from the Armstrong Fremeaux series, and it sounds okay; like with all such compilations from 78's there is quite a bit of variability, depending on the condition of the shellac they could get their hands on.
