  1. Are you sure - Harry James?
  2. No question on Milt Gabler - Commodore Records Founder And he was Billy Crystal's uncle - as Crystal has often commmented
  3. Doesn't count - as I believe we are looking at ethnic influence.
  4. Perhaps they figure it is safer to rip off little outfits like Mosaic than step on the toes of a Sony, or other larger operation, who could say what the hell and if they wanted to, and spend a few thou on legal fees.
  5. Brad: You have done well at getting to the bottom of things such as this, with Mosaic, in the past. While it's fun to speculate, thanks for your effort in attempting to learn the truth. I guess we all did
  6. Yes, but they have a Dover Delaware address which makes them vulnerable to prosecution if they are a Pirate operation. It's impossible for U S copyright holders to get their arms around and prosecute the Foreign operators who, legal in their own countries, are actually illegally shipping into thr States. Chuck Nessa at one time covered the dilemma very well on the BNBB.
  7. Rooster - everyone has to see this movie. It is one of the all time greats. The story is great The dancing is GREAT And it is a comedy of comedies. For my money as talented as Gene Kelly certainly was and as beautiful as Cyd Charisse was, the scene stealers were Donald O'Connor in his wildly funny "Make 'Em Laugh" routine, and Jean Hagen as the dumb as a doorknob beautiful silent screen star with a ear spliting, glass shattering voice. She really deserved the Oscar.
  8. My advantage is my age. I saw Herman many times from The Band That Plays The Blues, through all the incarnations of the Herds. Kenton a few times, Ellington, Basie, McKinley, Oneof the greatest but little known- Georgie Auld, Goodman, Les Brown, Krupa, James, Calloway, Armstrong,Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Glen Gray, Dizzy Gillespie, and last of all , but not least of all, Guy Lombardo. Jan Garber and Eddie Duchin. (The last three must have been on the bill with a movie my girl friend wanted to see) This isn't bragging - this is just an example of one of the advantages of old age. Fran
  9. Butch Miles with Basie - A great swinging drummer
  10. Hank Mancini - Uniquely Mancini - "Cheers" "Chelsea Bridge" "Green Onions" and more. It just about completes my Mancinis What a great body of work.
  11. The others are sideman recordings from other Musicraft records. I count 20 Guild/Musicraft Gillespie sides - wwere there alternate takes?
  12. I just LOVE declaratory statements like this .. I have to wonder how many jazz acordionists you have listened to? .... Pete Jolly played a very fine jazz accordion, and we should not forget the great Tommy Gumina.. His work with Buddy DeFranco on a series of albums in the sixties and seventies, that deserve to be reissued on CD, shows what can be achieved ... By the way.. the word is spelled accordiOn, not accordiAn ... Oh my - such intensity of feeling !
  13. Maybe Mosaic can put together a Diz collection and remaster the muddy sound out of these takes. And, put the set in chronological order - Whe I got this set a few years ago I fired off a bitch to that Jackass Keepnews. I hope no one lets him near another reissue.
  14. I don't have any clutter - only stuff. But my wifes clutter is going to have to go because I need a lot more space. (please don't show her this post)
  15. Shouldn't that be funf "Stucken" (plural)
  16. "Elevation" by Red Rodney with Chaloff, Haig,Tiny Kahn, Chubby Jacson etal on Keynote
  17. Joe Mooney was excellent. And he made a few recordings I believe with the Sauter Finnegan Orchestra. But I can't understand the omission of the Art Van Damm Quartet from this discussion. I believe he was the only TRUE jazz accordianist. He really cooked. He recorded for Columbia records and later one of the German Jazz labels, (MPS?). Van Damm was no doubt head and shoulders above the other accordian squeezers Give him a listen
  18. Did the crooks take other 1/4 of the Cop car?
  19. Sonny Berman's intro solo on Woody Hermans "Love Me" from Mosaic's Columbia 1st and 2nd Herds collection.
  20. For all us "Vocalistas" there is a Boswell Sisters collection in the Mosaic planning stage.
  21. I did the same! I don't believe you guys - If I replaced my CDs with LPs I would have lost 90% of my collection. There aren't tht many CDs covered by LPs.
  22. Woody's Columbia - "Love Me" Sonny Berman's great solo, and his "Uncle Remus Said", His "Sidewalks of Cuba" and so much more that this foolish unfortunate genius recorded with the Herd in his short time with us.
  23. After much study and $ expenditure I can assure everyone there is no more convenient or practical way to store CDs than the much maligned JEWEL Box. It is compact and easy to file, and has but one draw back - don't drop one on a hard surface. If they would make them out of a more resilient plastic there could be no complaints. LONG LIVE THE JEWEL BOX
  24. The Complete Woody Herman 1st and 2nd Herds On Columbia. For a short few years the greatest Orchestra the world has ever known. And a marvelous job done by Scott Wenzel and Loren Schoenberg

    Overlooked Altos

Absolutely - Always my favorite ever since Jonah Jones "Just Like A Butterfly" - The prettiest alto ever heard - Hilton Jefferson And another Alto grossly underrated - Johnny Bothwell - (Raeburn, Krupa, Herman). While we are at it - the worst, out of tune and sour noted was Jimmy Dorsey - who was one of the nicest musicians of the era - but nonetheless was a terrible saxophonist.
