  1. I was fortunate to have stumbled on a used CD copy of The Prisoner very early on in my listening around 1989 (on one of my trips to Chicago while I was in College, at Jazz Record Mart). While it wasn’t my first Herbie leader date, it might have been my third — and it was definitely one of my very first 40 jazz purchases. And I think(?) I picked up a copy of Speak Like a Child on that same Chicago trip (I was in college 200 miles away in western Illinois) — the second of Herbie’s two “Gil Evans”-influenced albums. I think I’ve cited either one (or the other) as “my favorite Herbie album” ever since. Over the years, more often than not it’s been The Prisoner — although early on Speak Like a Child was the winner for a good 10 years!
  2. Not true!! It really is Black Narcissus!! See my previous post to an older thread here that has a link I found to a radio podcast that includes the audio proof!
  3. Lot more prior discussion about these two, rare Japanese Henderson tracks — including my post about halfway down to a 3-hr radio show with an exact time index where to hear “Black Narcissus” — and the link seems to be active. It was almost impossible to FF to the exact time index on my phone (iPhone). But I remember when I first posted it, it was easier to get it to FF on my laptop — and even easier on my work PC (at the time), which brought it up in the windows media player. (Just tried on my phone again, and it’s still impossible to FF any way other than in 10-second increments.)
  4. Good to have you back, Larry. Tell what you feel comfortable telling — we’re all mostly empathetic folks here. Glad to hear you’re doing better!
  5. WKRP was a nightmare to negotiate the physical media rights for, iirc.
  6. I saw him live back in 2013 here in DC, and I couldn’t connect with the music much at all. I was hesitant to be too critical then, because it sounded very much like something I ought to have liked — but I just couldn’t wrap my ears around much of any of it. I’ve never owned any of his CD’s.
  7. Don’t know about any bootlegs specifically with the version of “Dancing Mist” with Joe (although there were a couple CD boots with the entire Phillips/Fontana LP, but with no extra material as far as I know)… …BUT, there was this obscure (legit) double-LP with just that one cut — and several other versions of the same tune (different bands) that came out in Japan only in 1971. https://www.discogs.com/release/7535147-Masabumi-Kikuchi-All-About-Dancing-Mist A friend of mine found it in the blogosphere somewhere a downloaded and burned me a copy — but the tune itself isn’t all that exciting, imho (iirc). But afaik, this obscure double-LP is the only source of the extra “Dancing Mist” track.
  8. …here ‘tis:
  9. Just hiked to the National Cathedral from home (~2.5 miles), and am about to enjoy the following organ recital… https://cathedral.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Christmas-2023.pdf The whole thing is also live-streamed, starting in 7 minutes (1:30pm Eastern), and I’m pretty sure you can replay it at your leisure after it plays live..
  10. Also available as a 3cd set too! https://orgmusiclabel.bandcamp.com/album/the-found-tapes-live-in-los-angeles
  11. Or is it that increases cases of cat ownership is caused by schizophrenia??!!!
  12. Andrew Hill, for a split second on the trio session from the BN Select -- it was just a minute or two (at most) in the middle of just one tune (and maybe an alternate?) -- far as I'm remembering. It's definitely a 'don't blink or you'll miss it' situation.
  13. I'm going to take my chances and still get this in January or early February. I just got a little bigger size order than usual from Dusty a few days ago (just my luck). I'm optimistic because there are quite a number of BBE jazz-reissue titles that have stayed available on Dusty's site for more than two years -- so I'm hoping I'll be safe waiting just another month or so. If not, I'm sure I can track one down one way or another -- but I do think they'll still be coming up on Dusty's site -- brand new -- for most of 2024, if not even 2025.
  14. What’s the George Braith one? Googled, and I’m coming up empty. Definitely, those other two were awful — but the original Japanese cover of Tippin’ the Scales (the red one) was great!! 👍
  15. Which others come to mind? (But, yeah, I’m remember that too.) NOT the Japanese ones, which were mostly great!! — but the US ones were nearly all(?) pretty lame, iirc.
  16. I feel like I vaguely remember this reference, but only just barely. Care to remind me of the details?
  17. By the way, Pandora served me up a track from that Jazz Messengers album this morning on my way to work — and I did a complete double take when I saw the cover and noticed the pic of Hank. I thought maybe it was was the same photo-shoot, but then it turned out to be the exact same photo, I let out an audible of some sort (on the subway, no less). That Far Away Lands cover doesn’t bother me any less now — and maybe even more, come to think of it — but at least I know why.
  18. So to recap… Why did they use a picture from about 1956? — a good 10+ years before the 1967 Far Away Lands session. (Laziness and/or ignorance, I guess.) And how/why did a photo from a Columbia album cover (and it’s the exact same photo) end up on a Blue Note cover in 1984? And yes, the lighting’s weird (or maybe especially for Blue Note). Or as my buddy put it in his txt-msg replies to me this morning… I'm fascinated by the merciless bright lighting in recording-studio photos from the big labels in '50s and '60s. So different from RVG's place. Strange to imagine how much good music was actually recorded in those interrogation-room lighting conditions.
  19. And that's the other thing. The Jazz Messengers date (or at least album cover) wasn't on Blue Note.
  20. OK, that's one of the things (since Far Away Lands was a session recorded in 1967). And how about 1956? The Jazz Messengers - The Jazz Messengers | Releases | Discogs
  21. I'd say that's semi-related to one of the wrong things (but only semi-related). (In other words, yes, the shadows are strange -- but why are they strange?) More to the point, the other things that are wrong (edit: probably) explain the shadows, but the shadows alone don't necessarily indicate anything is 'wrong' per se.
  22. Excellent guess, but it's NOT the glasses. (But, again, an excellent guess.)
  23. Hank Mobley: Far Away Lands (recorded May 26, 1967 -- first released in 1984, and this is the original cover). This cover has bothered me for nigh on 25 years, give or take. And just today I figured out WHY. Let's see if any of you can guess!! So, what are all the things that are wrong with this cover being for this Blue Note album? (And I mean besides the cut-rate Reid Miles knockoff titling/lettering thing, which has always bugged me too. But to be clear, I'm NOT talking about the wonky lettering, or questionable color choices (or color combination), or the logo, or the logo-placement, or the font size of the album title, or placement of said title -- NONE OF THAT. What ELSE is wrong? And, no, it's NOT the cigarette in his hand either.)
