  1. I think the fairly extensive liners for this obscure 1971 date by a band from Las Vegas paint a picture of the general Las Vegas jazz and ‘jazz-adjacent’ scene — iirc. I’ll have to look later and see what else they say that might be relevant here. https://www.organissimo.org/forum/topic/81816-spirit-free-plays-starship-dandy-obscure-1971-lp-by-las-vegas-group
  2. Now three years!! Bump for an old, fun thread!!
  3. Thanks for posting this, very interesting! For those who can’t see the JT article, it seems to also be available here — along with a bunch of photos of the album, and other info (I’ve only just skimmed it). https://www.queermusicheritage.com/sep2004liad.html …and here: https://www.queermusicheritage.com/mar2012-LIAD.html …and the whole thing can be had and/or heard here: https://loveisadrag.bandcamp.com/album/for-adult-listeners-only
  4. BTW, if anyone has just a Larry Young booklet — but no set… I also have all of the LY set as individual CD’s now, and I’d be glad to sell my LY Mosaic CD’s and cases (but no box) in exchange for a donation to the board for whatever the going rate is (and I’ll cover the P&H myself, to any US address). Thing is, I’d like to keep the water-damaged LY booklet I have — so the offer only goes for the discs and cases.
  5. Well then, how about this??!!!
  6. The only booklet-less set I ever bought was the Larry Young box — which I scored on eBay (cd’s only, no box) for ~$70 iirc (20 years ago, after it was OOP). But a dozen years ago someone on the board here offered me their slightly water-damaged LY book (which they’d gotten a replacement for from Mosaic several years earlier). I’d tried to get one from Mosaic at some point, but by the time I made my inquiry, they were already done and gone. So my LY set is box-less, but not booklet-less! (Not that I care about boxes.)
  7. Jim, you’re a saint for dealing with all this headache — now, and various board-related headaches over TWO decades. Boggles the mind how time flies.
  8. Several years ago while visiting Philly, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed dining at Abe Fisher (by the same executive chef as Zahav) — which appears to have closed permanently since the pandemic. It was one of THE very best meals either of us has ever had dining out while traveling, in over 25 years. And the decor (again, of Abe Fisher, now closed) was fantastic too — a wonderful melding of mid century modern and “modern” modern.

  10. Wish to hell this had also been on CD. Except for the lack of it being released on CD.
  11. Very nice article, and I’m glad to see some mention of the similarities of Cook and Joe Henderson. It’s frankly uncanny just how much Cook sounds like Joe sometimes — especially on a number of Blue Mitchel’s leader-dates for BN. But he plays so well, usually, that he practically never comes off as a bad knockoff of Joe — at least in my estimation. Still, the resemblance is sometimes almost unnerving.
  12. When you get the chance to listen to this a few times, please post your thoughts here!! — in a thread I made a while back for the entire CD.
  13. Same, on all counts. Joe Henderson is probably my personal ne plus ultra of saxophone players — but since I already had the 2015 SHMCD of Mode For Joe (with the ‘new’ previously unreleased alternate of the title track), I just couldn’t justify the expense of getting even the Joe Henderson BN Mosaic (for what would have been just a couple more early alternates) — and I settled for buying the booklet only. I called them and happened to get Scott (maybe the first time I’d ever talked with him, unless it was back in the 90’s when I used to call in orders now and then), and he was kind enough to sell me just the Joe Henderson booklet when I was ordering a couple other sets (to save both of us extra shipping and hassle). The Henderson box wasn’t actually quite OOP yet, but I explained my rationale — and he didn’t even blink about selling me one (despite their stated policy of not doing so while sets were still in print). I guess my long purchase history with them helped, or he took pity on me. I like Sonny Clark just fine, but I’ve never been specifically enthusiastic about him. I think I’ve got about 4 discs from this set already, and that’s been enough for me for about 15 years at this point. Now a complete Lee Morgan 60’s set with some actual previously unreleased studio material — now THAT’s something I might not be able to resist. But this Sonny Clark set just isn’t calling my name.
  14. Happy Birthday Hank Mobley!! 🥳 July 7th, 1930
  15. The Rise and Fall of Smooth Jazz I walked a lonely road as a teen-aged smooth-jazz fanatic. By Colin Marshall July 6, 2023 https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/the-rise-and-fall-of-smooth-jazz
  16. I’m not sure if I’m seeing anything(?) on Discogs (that isn’t a reissue or a compilation) between that Shepp date, and Blue Delight. Or am I overlooking something? Also, I wonder what the story was with HOW he ended up on Blue Delight. Not saying he shouldn’t have been on that date, but that certainly would have been at least slightly unexpected at the time, no? (Sidenote: I first heard Blue Delight when the college radio station I worked for got promo copies of all of those (then) ‘current’ A&M jazz releases… the two Sun Ra’s, two(?) Don Cherrys, a Cecil Taylor, and an Art Blakey, iirc. Were there any others? Maybe a Mulligan too, or am I just imagining that?)
  17. On my iPhone, I had to turn my phone sideways to see the full title. And I suspect if I was viewing with a slightly larger font, the title would be too far off to the right to see. (Probably all good on a PC or laptop, I would guess.) FWIW.
  18. Definitely worth exploring! https://americanarchive.org/special_collections/evolution-of-jazz https://americanarchive.org/catalog?f[special_collections][]=evolution-of-jazz&sort=title+asc&f[access_types][]=online
  19. Also worth mentioning, the entire thing is on YouTube as a playlist… https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nrSZe5KGQSSykMdCRkJ8ajMI-4MwxRSmE Here’s just the first track (embedded in this thread), but the whole thing is accessible at the link above.
  20. Some prior positive and somewhat glowing discussion of this as a CD release in this Nimbus thread (I know, because I was the one who mentioned it!)… I was a bit effusive, but a I think couple people agreed with me, so there’s that too. To summarize, it’s the vibes player that really impressed the hell out of me on this. The band is good too, but the quality of the vibes playing is what makes the whole thing really memorable (imho).
  21. I’m gonna decide by tomorrow or Tuesday — but I’ll probably go, and plan to get bar tickets (cheapest).
