The Complete ... Mulligan Quartet &Chet Baker?
kinuta replied to ASNL77's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I also have all the material on different cds. It's great stuff and recommended of course. The Annie Ross one is called ' Annie Ross Sings A Song With Mulligan' on Pacific Jazz. I'll post the cat no. and details as soon as I can find it. -
That's good new about Seinfeld. love 'The Bubble Boy', remember the Jeopardy game and 'The Moops' ? 'The Contest 'is another classic, in fact they all are. Watched ' Code 46' last night and was impressed. ps the line, 'not that there is anything wrong with that 'is from ' The Outing'.

Agree about 'Age Of Innocence' an ignored masterpiece which strikes me as a career parallel with Kubrick's ' Barry Lyndon'. Both films are TOO good, they didn't stand a chance as they demanded the audience sit still and watch!

Sal Apart from the bonus material, precisely in what way is the new edition of ' Raging Bull' better than the previous dvd version ? It's one of my all time favourites and I would like to hear more details before forking out for a replacement of the old incarnation. Thanks Dave ps ditto 'Malcolm X', the picture quality on the old one is more than satisfactory to my eyes, so what's the new version got to offer ?

Don't know how you can list faves by JS. Everything he did was great, period. The first time I heard him( on discs) was around 1962 and my musical sensibility changed for ever.

I don't know if it will help in catching the kittens but many cats who live outside love polysterene packing boxes. I'm pretty sure they would go inside and at least it would protect them from the cold. There is also a kind of stick that cats are crazy about, apparently chewing or even licking it gets them really stoned really quickly, even lions and tigers can't resist resist it. Ask your pet shop. Some food and a stick or two inside a polysterene case should do the trick. Dave

What does everybody collect besides music?
kinuta replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
DVD's, classics and film noir are my preference but newer stuff is covered too. Up to about 600 or so but have a l o n g way to go to catch up with the cds which have now spilled over to my office as we ran out of storage space at home( small Japanese condo). Crime paperbacks and WW2 books are also a milder obsession. -
Two recent films I saw on dvd that are notable for the superb picture quality ( besides being good and interesting films) are- 'Girl With A Pearl Earring' and ' Swimming Pool'.

10 Organ Records You Must Own To Post Here

I've scrolled through the pages of this thread but don't seem to see Baby Face Willette' Stop & Listen'. I would humbly suggest this is mandatory B3 music, listen to his take on ' Willow Weep For Me'. -
Nobody has mentioned the great ' The Bass And I'. Try to get the Somethin' Else copy if possible, the mastering is better than the Blue Note one. Another good one is 'Holiday In Rio' which is not, as the title might imply, a bossa nova session, but a great grooving live session, recorded, mysteriously, in mono.

Mingus -Eastcoasting Winners Circle ( credited as a Coltrane album but really a collective effort) Both on Bethlehem. Eddie Costa- Guys & Dolls Like Vibes ( Coral )

Dark Shadows Milestone Inspiration Milestone Reemergence Sharp Nine Dreams Of Gershwin Imagica Media Japan I have these titles and enjoy them all. I'd say ' Dark Shadows' is the one to try to get first but they are all excellent. The Gershwin one may be hard to find outside Japan.

Do You Collect Anything ?

Classic Hollywood films on dvd or dvdr. -
If you think he isn't serious about music watch the movie ' Wild Man Blues'. Don't forget he didn't appear at the Academy Awards show to get his Oscar for 'Annie Hall' as it was his night to play with the band, which was more important to him than the award.

I'm amazed at the stuff you guys eat. I feel guilty if I eat an ice cream bar. I am however a total curry addict and have been cooking my own for a long time. The results are now excellent even though I say it myself. -
Does anyone know if the newly released ' Strangers On A Train' is of better picture quality than the older version. I have the old one, with the US version as the main film and the UK version on the flip side, and although the picture quality is adequate it can't compare with 'Casablanca' or some of the other Warner classics. The best quality remastering I've seen on a black & white Hitchcock is still ' Rebecca' ( the Japanese release ) I think the Night Shamalyan contribution is a short feature on the 2nd disc.

I loved him( poltical correctness be damned ) ' Back To School' and ' Easy Money' remain at least.
-
As already mentioned ' Freedom', same sessions, band etc. Why on earth hasn't this been released on cd ??

Can't speak for Europe but there is a longish history of cheap versions here in Japan. I don't know anything about the whys and wherefores of public domain copyright laws but a large number of classic BN were once released here under obscure small Japanese labels at dirt cheap prices, the sound was faithful to the originals. I still have some, JS Prayer Meetin' and Plays Fats Waller, Adderleys Somethin' Else. Every one of the Beatles albums was released at bargain basement prices too. I still have those. It you weren't fussed about having the original artwork then they were a great bargain. Sorry if my comments are not directly pertinent to the spirit of the original thread.

I've got all three and you should do the same. If you want an order of preference I'd say- JJ Hodges Stitt.
