  1. Thanks for archiving this and the Big Band site. Your efforts are appreciated. If ever you decide to do an Akiyoshi-Tabackin BB set then I'll be pleased to help out with hard to find items.
  2. Not directly related but there was an article in one of the British newspapers several months ago about John Peel's collection of favourite 45's. I read the list with great interest and eventually managed to scounge a download copy. I wondered if it has since found it's way onto cd in the United Kingdom ? Any information would be most appeciated.
  3. Sad news indeed but not totally unexpected. I've loved his music ever since I first heard him with Mingus. Anyhow he left a fine set of recordings for us and all future jazz fans to enjoy.
  4. Yes, the first Stax-Volt Singles Box ( the black one) is the one to go for, truly magnificent and worth every penny. Otis' 'Remember Me' is a fine set that you might have missed.
  5. Try this for size His debut album is even better but mainly without the stipulated horn section. Ike Turners early stuff is highly recommended, very highly. Also don't forget Sam & Dave, Bobby Bland's stuff on Duke, almost any early period Stax-Volt, Mabel John is an overlooked Stax artist, Little Milton on Chess- he remains one of the greatest stage acts I've ever seen, and of course Otis. That's only skimming the surface.
  6. Did anyone else see the opening episode of 'Thief' ? I half expected some flaky, chummy, caper malarky but was impressed by how quickly it got very seriously interesting, with real acting. I can't wait for more.
  7. I especially like 'Brite Nitegown', even my missus , whos' comments are usually confined to 'TURN IT DOWN' started grooving around the living room.
  8. Laura.
  9. 'The Best And The Brightest ' is a true classic and a great work of historical importance. I've read it about three times. Needless to say it's lessons have been totally lost on this numbskull administration. Currently rereading PD James ' Innocent Blood'.
  10. I guess my collection is far better than I thought ! As Lon said I envy many of you the great music you haven't heard. For me I have no Albert Ayler or Archie Shepp .
  11. Woody Shaw- Disc 3 Basie Clef/Verve -Disc 5 I like the Hodges but the 7 disc Blue Moon Small Groups Complete 37-54 is as good or better imo.
  12. I've found the aforementioned Joe Roland on Savoy. Joltin' Joe Savoy Jazz SV-0215 1 Gene's Stew 2 Spice 3 Garrity's Flight 4 Indian Summer 5 Half Nelson 6 Love Is Just A Plaything 7 Music House 8 Joyce's Choice 9 I've Got The World On A String 10 Stephanie's Dance 11 Sally Is Gone 12 Deedee's Dance 1 2 7 8 Joe Roland (vib) Wade Legge (p) Dauti Martucci (b) Ron Jefferson(d) Oct 17 1954 3 4 9 10 Joe Roland (v) Freddie Redd (p) Oscar Pettiford (b) Ron Jefferson (d) May 10 1954 5 6 11 12 Joe Roland (v) Paula Castle (voc) Joe Puma (g) Ish Ugarte (b) Harold Granowsky (ds) Sid Kassimir (vc) Mike Bartun (va) Gus Oberstein (vn) Jules Modin (vn) Jan 17 1950 Unfortunately the liners are missing so I can't give you any further info'. I think this is technically listed as available on a couple of sites but I wouldn't bet on it. I've never seen it anywhere in Tokyo shops. ps The Toshiba/EMI Japanese version of the Bethlehem is called just plain ' Joe Roland'.
  13. He did another session on Savoy that I think I have copy of somewhere. I'll have a look for it and let you know.
  14. I've got that cd and agree it's a good'un. Interesting note is that it features Freddie Redd. Have a listen to Teddy Charles 'Flying Home-Salute To Hamp' on Bethlehem. I think you'd like that if you haven't already got it. I like the nice warm mastering of those Japanese Bethlehems, they all sound really great like the old Blue Note Works series.
  15. I remember first seeing him with the Spencer Davis group at the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester around 1964. He was only a kid but everyone could tell he just had a special magic, he played piano and sang like a veteran soul man even back then. After that I never missed a chance to see him live.
  16. Just watched it, great stuff. Roll on next Monday.
  17. http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/search...7733472-1921568 The ones marked AV are available from Amazon Japan
  18. I can tell you for a fact that these have not been released on cd in Japan- Bluesmith Hobo Flats Peter & The Wolf Portuguese Soul Groove Drops Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf ? I may be mistaken but wasn't 'Confirmation' released as part of the ' Open House' cd ? I think that a lot of the other titles on your want list are either deleted or only available on lp. Open House Six Views Of The Blues Cool Blues Dynamic Duo Standards I'm Movin' On are probably available here but the only way to find most of them is hauling arse round the used shops. An alternative suggestion is to contact the Japanese retailer recommended by many board members. His name eludes me but look under 'Recent Japanese Releases 'posts or post a request for his contact e-mail address. ' Bluesmith ' is a great set by the way. Good luck and if you need any help with the language just ask me.
  19. I don't have the Mosaic but have several of the sets included. 'Sound Pieces ' is great especially the quartet part with Steve Kuhn, Ron Carter and Grady Tate. They do an amazing version of 'The Shadow Of Your Smile'. Unfortunately it seems the quartet tracks are NOT on the Mosaic which is a real shame. ' Spirit Of 67' is just a really great cd, period. All in all I'm a bit ambivalent about this Mosaic. I'm sure it will be good but why couldn't we have all of 'Sound Pieces'. I suppose that anyone with even a passing interest in Oliver Nelson already has ' Blues & The Abstract Truth' and' More B&TAT' but it seems odd that they are not in the box.
  20. Is it just me or was there a major blunder with Tony's injured face ? The bandage covered the left hand side of his face, he ripped it off and in the next scene the right hand side of his face was covered in burns. Series 5 has been great so far, we've been very entertained. We should have a poll for the undisputed heavyweight 24 villain. Sherry and Tricky Dicky are strong contenders but my vote goes to good ol' Nina Myers.
  21. Sarah disc 7 'Sweet N' Sassy' & ' Star Eyes' followed by Count Basie Clef/Verve Fifties Studio Recordings Disc 1.
  22. My brother in law was dead within six months of diagnosis. My wifes best friend's husband lasted about one year after diagnosis. Smoking really does kill.
