'The Best And The Brightest ' is a true classic and a great work of historical importance. I've read it about three times. Needless to say it's lessons have been totally lost on this numbskull administration.
Currently rereading PD James ' Innocent Blood'.
I guess my collection is far better than I thought !
As Lon said I envy many of you the great music you haven't heard.
For me I have no Albert Ayler or Archie Shepp .
I remember first seeing him with the Spencer Davis group at the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester around 1964. He was only a kid but everyone could tell he just had a special magic, he played piano and sang like a veteran soul man even back then. After that I never missed a chance to see him live.
I can tell you for a fact that these have not been released on cd in Japan-
Bluesmith
Hobo Flats
Peter & The Wolf
Portuguese Soul
Groove Drops
Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf ?
I may be mistaken but wasn't 'Confirmation' released as part of the ' Open House' cd ?
I think that a lot of the other titles on your want list are either deleted or only available on lp.
Open House
Six Views Of The Blues
Cool Blues
Dynamic Duo
Standards
I'm Movin' On are probably available here but the only way to find most of them is hauling arse round the used shops. An alternative suggestion is to contact the Japanese retailer recommended by many board members. His name eludes me but look under 'Recent Japanese Releases 'posts or post a request for his contact e-mail address.
' Bluesmith ' is a great set by the way.
Good luck and if you need any help with the language just ask me.
I don't have the Mosaic but have several of the sets included. 'Sound Pieces ' is great especially the quartet part with Steve Kuhn, Ron Carter and Grady Tate. They do an amazing version of 'The Shadow Of Your Smile'. Unfortunately it seems the quartet tracks are NOT on the Mosaic which is a real shame.
' Spirit Of 67' is just a really great cd, period.
All in all I'm a bit ambivalent about this Mosaic. I'm sure it will be good but why couldn't we have all of 'Sound Pieces'.
I suppose that anyone with even a passing interest in Oliver Nelson already has ' Blues & The Abstract Truth' and' More B&TAT' but it seems odd that they are not in the box.
Is it just me or was there a major blunder with Tony's injured face ?
The bandage covered the left hand side of his face, he ripped it off and in the next scene the right hand side of his face was covered in burns.
Series 5 has been great so far, we've been very entertained.
We should have a poll for the undisputed heavyweight 24 villain. Sherry and Tricky Dicky are strong contenders but my vote goes to good ol' Nina Myers.
My brother in law was dead within six months of diagnosis. My wifes best friend's husband lasted about one year after diagnosis. Smoking really does kill.
Count me in with the Shirley Scott fans. Two I often play are 'A Walkin' Thing' on Candid (CCD79719) with Terrell Stafford and Tim Warfield and 'Oasis' on Muse( Muse MCD 5388) with Charles Davis and Houston Pearson. On the latter they do a cut called 'Basie In Mind' which features an absolute tear the house down solo by Shirley. The Legends Of Acid Jazz set comprising 'Hip Soul' & 'Hip Twist' is also great (Prestige PRCD-24200-2).
Completely agree, especially 'Singing In The Rain', a true masterpiece and the finest musical ever made( imo), losing to 'The Greatest Show On Earth'. I wonder how many palms were greased with baksheesh to bring off that result.
'Taking Care Of Business' is very nice.
You might also like ' Nocturne'(OJC) with Lem Winchester,'Meet Oliver Neslon'(OJC) and Shirley Scott's ' Blue Seven'(OJC). 'Blue Seven' was pretty hard to find but worth the effort. It 'really burns' to use the accepted vernacular.
