  1. Kat, PM me your address and i will send you a copy from my TOCJ issue.
  2. There must be some problem with some of the master tapes from the Prestige sessions. Nine of the tracks are issued in mono while the rest of the thirty two tracks are in stereo on the US issues. I wonder if those stereo tapes are damaged or just misplaced.
  3. There also may be some unissued stuff. I remember a post that Bresnahan made on the old BN board that Cuscuna had told him that there was alot of extra Jazz Crusaders material in the vaults. This seems to be the case on the Lighthouse material that has been issued so far. The '66 cd has two extra tracks and the '68 cd has four. Lets hope the same is true on the studio dates. Jim, Im with you on Felder. Another in the long line of Texas tenormen who sound like every solo will be their last. so lets get it all in.
  4. Not a working band, but Gil Evans.
  5. I received the email and from what i could gather they are looking for money to add new content to their site. They seem to be claiming that by adding what ever they are looking to add that it will benifit musicians. It sounds to me like they may have money problems.
  6. Cocerning the Kenny Cox BN albums. I have burned both albums. Introducing comes in at 41:44 and Multidirection at 38:29 for a grand total of 80:13. When i record lp's i do it one track at a time and cue them up as tight as you would have on a commercial cd. I leave four seconds between tracks. So getting both albums on one cd would be close if you shorten the space between tracks. You would almost have to take it down to just two seconds between tracks.
  7. Im glad to know that Benny Poole is still kickin'. He is one of the truely nice guys in the business. Jim, I hope you guys get to play with him at some point. Benny has done a ton of organ gigs, so he knows what hes doing in that setting. I remember seeing him one year at the Jackson County Fair with organ and drums and he had everyone dancing, which was amazing because Jackson is not exactly a jazz mecca. I guess Bennys persoality comes through his horn and it just makes you happy and you want to move. I can still see all those farmers claping like crazy after Benny played Red Top.
  8. Man, i had forgot about Gene's connection with Benny Poole. I have known Benny since the 60's. Benny was one of the local legends. He lived in Jackson Michigan which is about a half hour south of here and used to make just about all the jam sessions here in town. He was the best tenor player in the area. Ive lost contact with him, so im not sure if he is still with us. The last i heard of him he was giging on cruise ships.
  9. I think i remember seeing it on one of Hans lists. You might want to ask Mr Tanno about it. Like Chuck i have had the date on vinyl for some time.
  10. When i started working in the retail record business in the late 50's we had two listening booths in our store in East Lansing. We had a system where we kept all of the lp's filed behind the counter and the covers were out in the bins. If you wanted to hear an lp you brought the cover up and we played the lp on turntables that were wired to the speakers in the booths. Once we got into the 60's those booths became a never ending source for grass roach's at the end of the day. Not all labels used shrink wrap at first as i remember. The rackjobbers were only interested in the big hits, so many of the indie jazz labels like Blue Note did not shrink wrap their stuff until later in the 60's. Once everyone started using wrap, we did away with the listening booths.
  11. Ray, If you look at the discription again at ebay, the album is NOT sealed, but as i remember BN did not shrink wrap their stuff until after they were purchased by Liberty. Because of my business i used to do alot of Mall collectables shows. When they were the "in" thing i watched many a person pay very high prices for baseball cards. Then the bottom dropped out of the market and these guys will never get their money out of them. The same thing happened in stamps. I guess i am just saying that this was not a very good investment, no matter how you try to dress the pig.
  12. Ray, The Bird sax is a different story. Parker touched and played that horn (and probably pawned it a few times). The Hipp side is just another lp no matter how good shape its in. I could understand if it was that test pressing of Chico Hamilton's South Pcific with Dolphy, which may be the only one in existence. I would guess that years from now when this guy, as they say, "moves to Vermont", his family will take the lp to a dealer and tell him that dad paid five grand for it and the dealer will say "cool, ill give you $20 for it".
  13. So now what? Is this guy going to just sit and stare at his $5000 lp every night. He cant play it, less he have some sort of mishap that produces a defect in the vinyl. What a waste of time and money.
  14. Danny D'Imperio turns the big 6-0 today. You are now an official member of The Old Jazz Geezer club, and will get your own Lazy Boy to push up to the round table. Have a great one my man.
  15. Back in the mid to late 60's new Blue Note releases,in our shop, sold for $2.95 mono and $3.95 stereo. I dont remember the mono wholesale price, but i think the stereo lp's were about $2.60 or thereabouts. Those $1.47 prices were probably clearence prices. I think back in those days we were buying Riverside and Prestige closeouts for about $1.25 and selling them for $1.99.
  16. Jim and his family are on vacation. He should be back this coming week.
  17. PT Barnum was right, there's a sucker born every minute.
  18. Daniel, The quartet was Larry on cans, Burton on vibes, Mike Wofford piano and Bob West bass. They were recorded in Nov. & Dec. of 1963. Looking at the Lord Disco i see the Interplay lp's were on cd at one time.
  19. Now that i checked my stacks, there are two volumes of the Manne-Hole gig on Interplay records and the Vault lp. I think Larry owned the tapes from that gig and licenced them to Interplay and Vault.
  20. I would have to say street smart. I dont have alot of formal education as you can sometimes tell by the grammer and spelling in my posts. On the other hand by working most of my life, i had a big head start on buying lots and lots of jazz records.
  21. Martyjazz, The soloing is spit evenly between EA and Stewart on six of the eight tunes. They each have one ballad feature on the remaining two songs. As you say, you always know which guy is playing because of their style difference. I guess this date grew out of some gigs that they played together in 2003. To my ears they seem to bring out the best in each other without the date turning into a carving contest. Hope this helps you.
  22. OK, i gave them both a spin. Both are pretty foregettable dates. When Joanna Loved Me is the better of the two. Two tracks have strings, with the rest being a quartet with guitar, bass, drums and conga. I Have The Feeling...with strings, including harp, borders on the dreaded smooth jazz of today. I would not look for these dates to be reissued by BN.
  23. It was issued on cd in Japan as a TOCJ in 1994 and went out of print in 1996. I think your only chance is to watch the used cd sites or ebay.
  24. Im sorry to hear about Larry's passing. Mike, if you are referring to the Bunker/Burton dates from Shelly's Mannehole, they are both fine sides. I have one on a Japanese label and one on Vault. I dont know if they ever made it to cd, mine are both vinyl. Larry was one of those players that when you saw his name on a date, either on drums or vibes, you knew you were going to get a nice performance.
