  1. Bernie's Tune-Bernard Peiffer- Emarcy. I guess this was his first US date. Side 1 is a trio with Joe Puma and Oscar Pettiford. Side 2 a quartet with Puma, Chuck Andrus and Ed Thigpen. Very nice date. Also The Jorgen Ryg Jazz Quartet -Emarcy. Decent trumpet player. I think this date was probably leased from Metronome Records of Sweden.
  2. Yes on the Verve. It looks like there were two. One from June of 59 and the other from December of 59. Both are with Valdambrini, and Lars Gullin is on the December date. I have never laid eyes on either album, so i dont know the titles.
  3. The bright yellow cover Jazzland was by The Werner-Rosnegren Swedish Jazz Quartet and titled Bombastica! To my knowledge Basso did not have a album issued on Jazzland.
  4. The charts were arranged by Don Sebesky and added after the quartet tracks were recorded. He might be the Bone player also, but i cant confirm that.
  5. Bertrand, The tune Pitchin'Can on the cd release is a add on from the America album of the same name. It was not on the original Black Gypsy issue or on the Prestige reissue.
  6. Jimmy Raney-In Three Attitudes-ABC original pressing. Some tracks with Bob Brookmeyer and some with Al Cohn joining Jimmy on the front line. Both Red and Whitey Mitchell are also present along with John Williams,Osie Johnson and Jack Edie.
  7. Hey Jim, As to the mysterious reed man. Do you think these might be the lost recordings of the infamous Arr Niehaus?
  8. I have that Brookfield Andante album. Not recorded real well and the usual slightly out of tune club piano, but Cecil had good chops on this live date. I like it.
  9. Through 1962 i count 27 tracks that are still listed as unissued. Ofcourse i have no way of knowing if they are complete takes.
  10. Back in those days i used to see Bert alot at a regular Sunday night session at a place called Mr Kelly's, which was put on by legendary Detroit DJ Ed Love. There was a pretty large group of guys that made those sessions. Some of the guys i remember being there were Wendell Harrison, pianists Teddy Harris and Claude Black, Bohanon, and if he was home Roy Brooks. There were many others that i cant remember at the moment. Most of the other clubs in Detroit were dark on Sunday nights, so whoever was in town used to come by and sit in. One night that sticks out in my mind was was an appearence by Arthur Prysock. It was'nt him so much that i remember, but the effect he had on the ladies in the audience. Had it been a rock show, im sure there would have been some undies tossed on the stage. In answer to your queston on Bud Spangler. Bud went to school here at MSU and was one of the top drummers in town. He also did a weekly radio show at WKAR in East Lansing. After graduating he went back to Detroit where he worked at WDET, which is a public radio station. He was, and still is pretty tight with Danny Spencer, the drummer with the Detroit Contemporary Five. So he hang out alot with Kenny Cox and co. at that time. I think he appeared on a Strata lp called Location by The Contemporary Jazz Quintet. Bud then moved to the San Francisco area where he still lives and works. I cant remember the title, but he is on one of Jessica Williams albums and he did one or two dates with trumpeter Tom Peron. The last time i talked to Bud was a few years ago. At that time he had a radio show which was kind of unique. He would go into the area clubs like Yoshi's and record whoever was there and then play the tapes on his show. He also engineered most of the Maybeck solo piano series for Concord. Well if i think of anything else, i shall return.
  11. If you look real close they all have a guy with his back to the camera taking a wiz. Of the images you posted, the one where you can see the best is the one in the boat. The one in front of the bus is the hardest because there is a band member up on the hill that you cant make out in this image. Dont feel bad, most of the people who bought their albums never saw the joke.
  12. I still have a 1219 that i use as a backup. Like Chuck i got mine in the late 60's or early 70's. I think the original cartridge i put on it was a Shure V15 Type 2 which was the top of the line in those days. It served me well for many a year and still does the job when called upon.
  13. Back then we filed the Alpert albums in the "Easy Listening" section at our store. If we had put them in the Jazz section, we would have been run out of town on a rail. The A&M albums we used to look forward to in those days were the Baja Marimba Band sides. Not for the music, but for the covers. On most of them there was always a band member with his back to the camera taking a wiz. It was maybe the only cover art running joke i can think of.
  14. The Three Souls were regulars at the organ room here in Lansing. Sonny always came off as a pretty cocky individual. As an aside, the Souls Robert Shy was about the baddest drummer who used to come through here. I think he's still active in Chicago is'nt he?
  15. The is a Fresh Sound cd titled West Coast Days credited to Joe Gordon and Scott LaFaro that Richie is on. Three of the tracks are with Shelly's group and three tracks are a quartet with LaFaro. All of it was recorded at the Lighthouse.
  16. The Dupree lp was titled Shadow Dancing. Among others Hank Crawford-alto and Jimmy Smith- electric piano were on the date.
  17. To be fair to KD, he also reviewed Introducing Eric Kloss and had nothing but good things to say about Don Patterson's peformance on the date. He gave that record 4 stars. He also reviewed Night Of The Cookers Vol 2, and in his words, found it to be a tired record. I dont think he was anti organ. I think he judged each record on its own merits.
  18. The only thing i could find in the disco's is that they both did albums for the Versatile label in 1978. This album may be parts of those dates. Just a guess on my part.
  19. Yes, he plays Varitone on Say It Loud!. I would not let that scare me away, IMO this is one of his better late Blue Note dates.
  20. Soul Stream, Here is the Kenny Dorham review of Behind The 8 Ball from the July 29, 1965 issue of Down Beat. " From what is happening on the first track, i sometmes wonder who selects the titles for these albums, because 8-Ball hits the nail on the head. Universe is a eight-bar 6/8, we'll say--sanctified, blusey, listen-for-yourself thing. Is the universe round? If it is, it very well could be a bigger eight bars--out of sight...seven minutes and three seconds of it. Amen.... Well, lets see here. Arranged by Willette... that alto... that poor guitarist is hung up in there--a victim of circumstance or choice? Tacos Joe is a blues with a sancti-background. Guitarist White i like--but mucho tacos, hasta luego. Roll'Em Pete ia listed on the cover but not on the record label. The a&r man or someone was in a hurry to get rid of this one. Wait a minute... Willette pays it .... guitarist just played a lick (musical phrase)--he's in trouble... poor fellow. Just A Closer Walk. I don't like the idea of jazzing this. A line has to be drawn somewhere. I don't believe what i hear. He could, should be closer to thee or in.... St. James Infirmary. Well let's move on down the line to the next one, Sinnin' Sam, who is also behind the 8-ball. There is nothing of sufficent musical content here to deserve a rating; so I'm leaving it where i found it--Behind The 8-Ball." (K. D.) Rating: no stars
  21. During his short stint as a record reviewer for Down Beat, Kenny Dorham reviewed Behind The 8 Ball. As i remember he gave the record no stars and the gist of his review was that the record was a waste of good vinyl. I will try and dig the review out and post it.
  22. Mikeweil, If memory serves me correct, i think that Shaw Enough and Plays Charlie Parker are the same album. So you can knock one Cecil Payne off your wish list. As Stereo Jack has mentioned most of the Parkers, Youngs and some others were out on Collectables at one time. However they seem to be OOP now. The Oscar Moore is a Tampa date that is out on VSOP. I think the Kessel/Land might be a Tampa date also, which i think is on VSOP under Jimmy Rowles leadership. It will be nice to have this stuff out again.
  23. A TOCJ is a Japanese cd issue. They pack a almost full lp size repoduction of the back liner notes along with the standard booklet.
  24. Thanks for the info Jack, i knew Rita had a sister, but could not remember her name. The old memory aint what it used to be.
  25. Speaking of singers, was'nt Booker T married to singer Rita Coolege(sp?)? Rita was a first call backup singer in those days along with Whitney's mom Cissy Houston.
