First blueberry pies for this year are in the oven. I might have to break my self imposed coffee ban, as pie and coffee for breakfast is one of the great things in this world.

I was thinking "Voyage to Myanus" would be worse, but that is my sick mind.

Try option (the button between ctrl & "apple" button to the left of the space bar) click to get images. Microsoft makes a version of word for the mac. Click on the desktop then hit the apple key and the F to do a search for word. Otherwise TextEdit comes on all macs (I believe) and should be able to open a word document. Again click on the desk top and then hit the apple and F keys to do a search for TextEdit, you should be able to click on the icon in the found documents window to open the program. good luck

The Five Albums That Changed the Way You Hear Music
(BB) replied to md655321's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thomas Dolby ~ Golden Age of the Wireless. This was the first album I bought that was out of the Steve Miller, Aerosmith, Kansas type of music that my older brother listened to. From here I went on to listen to a lot of mid-to-late 80’s British pop, rock, goth, ska… At this same time I started going to some of the underage dance clubs in Seattle. I have many great memories of my friends from that time and dancing as the mind-numbing volume and non-stop dancing would almost have a trance like effect. In high school music was at the core of my social world. David Bowie ~ Heroes Heroes and Low were some of the first records I became completely obsessed with. I wore out a couple copies each on cassette before getting the lp’s and then eventually the cd’s. Now I’m back to lp copies. For whatever reason these sides never get old to me. Thelonious Monk ~ Standards I friend in college made me a tape of this and I was mesmerized. It just sounded so wrong and off yet completely together at the same time. I knew there was something about jazz that I was attracted to, but it took me a while to find it. Jimmy Giuffre ~ The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet For me this is some of the most intimate honest and beautiful music I have ever heard. Exploring his music has opened my ears to every thing from “free jazz” to big band. #5 tbd. I am hoping to find the classical cd/lp that flips the switch and opens that world for me. -

Check here, needle doctor. When I have called about finding a stylus for an older or more obscure cartridge I got an actual human being who knew something and could quickly answer my question.

Seedless melons or even the much ballyhooed don't really get me all that excited. Now if someone could come up with a seedless raspberry or blackberry or better yet a guaranteed ripe mango, then you might get my attention.

We have cooked all-grill, nothing but the grill (we includeds my neighbor who is a professional chef). The end product is different from what you can get from the oven. As far as the oven goes a pizza stone is the trick, but then you need a pizza peel to get the pizza onto and off of the stone, but I digress. For the grill we get the dough fairly thin 1/8" to 1/4" thick and no bigger than 10"-12" around. A pizza oven usually runs 500º-600º so you want a fairly hot fire with the coals spread evenly across the bottom of the grill. It also helps if your grill has a good coat of cooking spray. Throw the raw dough down on the grill and wait a couple of minutes till that side is just cooked then pick it up and flip it over, those with particularly hairy hands may want to use some tongs as the burning hair can lend an off flavor to the pizza. Once flipped you work fast to get some toppings on there. As I said this is a different beast than traditional oven pizza. A little red sauce, some thin slices of fresh mozarella & basil; Goat cheese, pesto & sun-dried tomatoes; a little bbq sauce and some thin strips of poached chicken with caramelized onions; etc... Basically you want something that just needs a touch of heat to be ready to eat. Once the toppings are in place you throw the lid on and let it cook till it is done. I would guess if your grill is big enough you could try with indirect heat, but I'm a weber guy so that is not an option. As you can guess this is a multi person operation. Someone tossin' the dough someone workin' the grill and it helps to have the toppings on a table right at the grill. Oh yeah and a bunch of people to eat them while they are still hot. pizza peel

Any hair left on your hands? We were going to do Pizza on the grill last friday, but the rest of the family went out to the lake, while I stayed home had a pbj and worked. All for the best as we had a short by very intense thunderstorm right about dinner time. Maybe next week.

music with silence written into the score
(BB) replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Art Ensemble of Chicago is the first one that pops to mind, especially on "People in Sorrow". Actually I'm giving it a spin and as I listen to it and it's hard to say where there is "silence" and where a sound is left to find it own conclusion. I have the feeling that trying to define "silence" is right up there with trying to define what music is. -

It's hot here and only going to be getting hotter. Friday and Saturday are going to be up over 100 with nights in the 70's, and without any AC that means we'll be lucky if we can keep the house below 80. Right now Illinois Jacquet ~ Port of Rico (with Count Basie on organ) is hitting the spot. Next in line will be Mr. Wait's first lp. Then maybe a little Ben Webster ~ Did you call?

Favorite pizza places (past, present)
(BB) replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
they only put meat on the pizza if you ask for it. True, but most cheese contains meat (rennet, made from the stomachs of calves). I'm pretty sure fresh mozzarella is typically rennet-free (though a quick web search revealed that this is not always the case...), but if you are vegan I guess that is a non-issue - the pizza thing just isn't going to happen. I was a vegan for a while and found that the worst vegan food was the stuff trying to emulate inherently non-vegan food. The one vegan pizza I had was really depressing. I was making pizza a couple of weeks ago and forgot to get a non-dairy cheese substitute for a neighbor who's breast feeding baby's intestinal track doesn't like it when mama eats dairy. I made a pie with red sauce, lots of roasted garlic and some fresh basil, it was very tasty. -

In the mid to late 80's Pagliacci Pizza in Seattle was a destination location for me. I have had it a few since to confirm that they are the benchmark I compare all other pies to. Pizza My Heart in Santa Cruz, is also a great place, although the Palo Alto store for the same company has the much better name. -

Agree 100% This happens to damn near everyone in this day and age. Another bit of advice - network, network, network. Call anyone you think might be able to help and ask them for 15-20 minutes of their time. DON'T ask them for a job, rather - ask them for their advice. There is a psychological reason for making this distinction - most people want to help, but they usually don't have a job handy and they also don't wanted to feel pressured into "finding" someone a job. BUT, if all they are doing is offerring their two cents, they are happy to do it. I have been on both sides of these situations and trust me, it WILL work. Remember, the goal going into any meeting is just to get another contact (i.e. keep the networking alive). When you meet with people, be sure to have a pitch together - tell them what you are lookng for. This sounds like a duh, but I have met with folks who don't do this very well. The point is - people WANT to help - but they have to know what you are looking for (i.e. who to send you to next). Think of networking as your new job. Get up at the normal time, get ready as if you were going to work and get on the phone (or get to your meetings). Put in at least 6 hours a day (allow a couple extra hours for record shopping as your gift to yourself). Depending on the type of job, salary you want, etc., this could take some time. Six months is reasonable. When the offer comes, be prepared to negotiate and get what you want. There is NO shame with any of this and as you search, just think about how you will someday pay it back - because someday you will I would agree on all points here. At first it is a horrible feeling and when you have kids, or are a provider in any way, it is worse. I like to solve problems and figure out the best way to do things, and have looked at job searches in the same way, for me it makes the problem a little less personal, but you will figure out what works for you.
