  1. Yes, great news indeed. I'll see you guys there. I'll be the one dressed like Bootsy Collins with a keytar.
  2. I want to hear that Maneri/Ban album they did for ECM.
  3. Wow, Robert Smith!
  4. Tuesday at 5 in Denton probably rules it out for me, assuming I could overcome my fears. Fears of...bad music??? And what is UNT trying to do with a 5:00 start on a Tuesday - limit their audience as much as possible?
  5. This sums up my opinion on both exactly. And as others have stated, Evans is great on Scenes in the House of Music with Parker-Guy-Lytton, and with Parker's electro-acoustic ensemble.
  6. I've posted a review of pianist David Haney's new CD on my blog. Here's an excerpt: "The Jackstraw of the title refers to Jackstraw Studios in Seattle, where these two sessions were recorded eight years apart. The first three tracks from 2000 feature the trio of Haney, (Julian) Priester and (Buell) Neidlinger, while the second three from 2008 feature the sextet. The trio cuts showcase a nice contrast between Priester's silky smooth trombone and Haney's spiky piano. Haney has that link to Ellington / Monk / Nichols that I love with some avant garde classical influences in the mix as well. Neidlinger comes to the fore on Lightening Tooth and Thunder Foot, a collectively improvised piece and the only track not wholly composed by Haney. I'm always impressed every time I hear Neidlinger, and I wonder why he hasn't recorded more." You can read the full review of David Haney's Day for Night at Jackstraw here.

I wondered what he's been up to. Seems like he was on a ton of sessions a few years ago, and then I didn't see his name much.
  8. "BTW this is the sort of really interesting thread that keeps me coming back to this board. Great stuff!" Agreed. I'd heard Twardzik's name, but I don't think I've heard any of his music. Just ordered the Twardzik/Freeman trio recording. I used to think of the 50's as "the hard bop era" , mostly because of all the Fantasy/Prestige/Milestone twofer reissues that came out in the 70's, but there was a lot more going on under the surface.
  9. I'm not going - it was slick just getting home from work. There's plenty of fender - benders out there too.
  10. I'm checking the UNT Facebook page to make sure it's still on. No word that it isn't as of yet.
  11. kh, do you know who's in Moran's band?
  12. Some great concerts, and so many on "off" nights! (Sunday, during the week, etc) I'm looking at the Bradford concert in Austin...
  13. "Free Nelson Mandoom Jazz" is one awkward mash-up of a name. I had to read it about 3 times to try and make sense of it. They've posted two tracks on Soundcloud. And here's a photo that came up when I did a Google Image search for the sax player:
  14. I wish Downtown Music Gallery would stock Babel Label titles.
  15. Not sure where you are, but The Cookers concert in Denton is this thursday the 6th.
  16. Interesting mix of musicians - hope you can make it.
  17. I like Sonny Fortune the best of the post-Shorter saxophonists; his first solo on Agartha is hair-raising, and later in the record he contributes some great flute in tandem with Pete Cosey's machine-like guitar noise. And Bartz would be a close second.
  18. You can listen to the first track at Max's Bandcamp site, although it's briefer than the other cuts.
  19. Jim, go to: https://mpactickets.entausa.com/WebPages/EntaWebPerformance/PERFORMANCELIST.ASPX Then scroll down and select "One O'Clock Lab Band Glenn E. Gomez Endowment Concert (Spring 2014)" It's a convoluted process, and to see the seating chart you have to download (or already have installed) Silverlight. Good luck! I'll see you there.
  20. Bassist Max Johnson has a new one coming out in February, with Kirk Knuffke on cornet and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Here's an excerpt from my review: "I like how the Trio lets the music unfold organically, somewhat like Other Dimensions in Music used to do, although the structure is compositionally-based, all from the pen of Johnson. There’s an appealing openness and looseness to the sound, and when things get uptempo I’m reminded of Ornette’s classic quartet (without the alto, of course) in the way the bass and drums propel things forward." You can read the full review on my blog.
  21. Thanks for the dates - hopefully I can get down to H-town for the Bradford show.
  22. That Braxton is nice, and the packaging (graphics, booklet) is first rate. Samuel Blaser is coming out with one on that label.
  23. So true! No luck in Dallas, unfortunately.
  24. thanks for the tip! Had no idea TJ Maxx carried that type of thing.
