  1. Glad to see that some folks know of her, as she was a new name to me.
  2. Seattle-based trumpeter and composer Sam Boshnack has a new CD out with her quintet called Exploding Syndrome. Here's an excerpt from my review: "There are some subtle arranging touches...the front line of trumpet and clarinet/bass clarinet creates a rich texture, and there are times where distorted electric piano is laid on top of what sounds like prepared piano. Things take an interesting left turn at the end of the CD, on the tracks Dormant, Exploding Syndrome and Ashcloud. Basically a suite within an album that could be heard as a suite, there’s an extra dose of energy and edge, topped off on the title track with vocalizations that sound like a ninja on crack." You can read the full review of Exploding Syndrome on my blog.
  3. Thank you fer urbina! Just ordered the Parker and Powell.
  4. Amazon U.S. has several listed, new and used.
  5. Thanks for the link to the interview - interesting stuff.
  6. His two Hat albums are great, and even have just a touch of fusion with Marc Ducret on guitar.
  7. xybert, Jass is available as a CD from the label, Yolk. I had no problem ordering from them.
  8. "Small" doesn't seem like a good word to use in the title of a porn flick.
  9. I would think they're deliberately being tongue-in-cheek. It got us talking about them, didn't it?
  10. Steve: "I certainly think Wooley, Halvorsen, Sorey, Jones, Smith, Ban, Sacks, Evans, Davis, Gerstein, et al are of the newer generation. They are all in one way or another highly connected to that previous group that includes musicians like Malaby, Berne, Cleaver, Rainey, Waits, Maneri, Noriega and all the rest." Leeway: "Of all the previous generation avatars, it might turn out his (Braxton's) influence will be the most significant and pervasive. Many of those listed above, studied or played with Braxton, and many others became associates of those who did." I think both are excellent points. Regarding age, I look at a new generation in terms of when they started to make their mark rather than their age.
  11. I'm interested in this, but I heard really mixed things about "All Our Reasons". I heard one track from the new one, but I'd like to hear more.
  12. Yes, we do, and it's really exciting. And a lot of them hang together: Laubrock, Kris Davis, Mary Halvorson, Tyshawn Sorey, Angelica Sanchez...
  13. Can you remember what music they were playing?
  14. I feel the same way, which is why I'm careful as to what I preview on Spotify. I tend to check out stuff that's likely to be more mainstream, to avoid buying "the same old same old."
  15. Pianist Danny Fox and his Trio are releasing their second CD, Wide Eyed, on Hot Cup Records. Here's an excerpt of my review: "I recently listened for the first time to the Russ Freeman Trio from 1957 (Russ Freeman/Richard Twardzik, Pacific Jazz) and I was struck by similarities to that what Freeman was doing back then and Fox’s approach today. The music that The Danny Fox Trio makes is harmonically adventurous, yet melodic and with a strong sense of groove, although not always “swing” in the traditional sense." The full review is on my blog.
  16. Yes, I would say either of the two Paradoxical Frog CDs on Clean Feed, or the second Anti House CD on Intakt, Strong Place, are good introductions.
  17. Jamie Alexander Smith is a Scottish pianist who has a new EP out of solo piano. I've reviewed it on my blog, and here's an excerpt: "Smith cites Keith Jarrett as an influence, and there are echoes of Jarrett in the way he combines classical and gospel forms. But it would be unfair to stop there, as Smith has clearly absorbed a lot of modern jazz and classical music. There are a wide range of approaches at work here, and Smith integrates them well, with good technique and a lot of independence between the hands." You can read the full review on improvisedblog.

  20. Well, I feel bad for missing this but the time of the concert made it impossible. Was it well attended?
  21. I was bummed, because when I ordered it, it was only listed as a download. Then shortly thereafter, they added the CD but it was too late. Please tell Babel Label to indicate if a CD or LP version is coming!
  22. Yes, that is a great recording.
  23. What he said.
  24. Same group that will be in Austin on Sunday, correct? For that matter, where is the Austin gig? Is it still on? Yes, it's the same group, but I don't know any details about the Austin gig. So I guess they're playing Austin, coming up to Dallas, and then coming all the way back down to Houston in 3 days!
