  1. Babel Label Ingrid Laubrock - Tenor Saxophone Ollie Brice - Bass Javier Carmona - Drums Ingrid Laubrock is often seen in the musical company of Kris Davis, John Hebert and Tom Rainey, but on Catatumbo she fronts a trio with bassist Ollie Brice and drummer Javier Carmona. Laubrock plays tenor throughout the date, recorded in November of 2010 at the Vortex in London. It begins a little tentatively, with Laubrock’s horn getting into dog whistle territory, but that quickly morphs into a more frantic section that shows an Evan Parker influence, somewhat unavoidable one supposes in this context. The group does a good job of negotiating through several peaks and valleys of intensity in what sounds like a freely-improvised set. Much of Catatumbo is played at less than full throttle, but this gives the group time to really investigate what is being played and respond to each other. Laubrock varies her sound between extended techniques and a full-bodied tone, an approach reminiscent of Ellery Eskelin. I wasn’t familiar with the bassist or drummer; Brice has a meaty tone and a lot of ideas, and Carmona is also impressive with an approach that marries free jazz drumming with a dash of the “kitchen sink” school of Lytton and Lovens. Babel Label has done a nice job with the presentation; purchasers receive a gatefold album, CD, and download. There’s a download-only option available as well.
  2. It's that collecting impulse that sometimes hits me. I have all the vinyl, but I've been eyeing the Mosaic set. It's not totally rational...but I'm also trying to justify it to myself via the convenience factor.
  3. I like your "avatar" image. I clearly remember going to the record store when I was a teenager and buying that Andrew Hill as well as the Sam Rivers from the same series. I had never heard either player at that time. They changed my life! Particularly the Hill; now I have everything he ever released.
  4. I'm worn out on a lot of the energy players, and to Allen's point it becomes as much of a pre-determined style as any other rote style of playing. I do like David S. Ware in small doses, and Assif Tsahar. Whatever happened to him, BTW?
  5. I'm jealous!
  6. Where was this, and who else was on board?
  7. Funny, that's how I think of Pete C. , 3 sheets to the wind with a drink in his hand...and that's while he's working!
  8. I too am looking forward to the new Ran Blake and the Michael Adkins. His first for the label, Rotator, was great.
  9. I believe this works only once, correct?
  10. Gaga by Maroney with the same group minus Ballou is excellent. It's on Nuscope. (it may or may not be a touching tribute to Lady Gaga )
  11. Of the ones Jetman mentioned, I picked up these two on the sale: Denman Maroney - Udentity Gerry Hemingway - The Whimbler As well as the Butcher with Sten Standell trio and Trio Viriditas Live. Clean Feed has so many good releases it's scary.
  12. So there really IS 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon!
  13. I had no idea Paul Bley did the soundtrack to Footloose...
  14. I've played the new Iyer once through and liked it a lot. He's included an interesting mix of covers that all work well together. I've yet to spin the new Lehman, but I was surprised to see him covering others' compositions. I'll definitely be ordering the new Nabatov at some point soon.
  15. Kris Davis, Good Citizen Fresh Sound New Talent Kris Davis - Piano John Hebert - Bass Tom Rainey - Drums Ms. Davis is fast becoming one of my favorite contemporary pianists. While I wasn't totally knocked out by her 2007 release Rye Eclipse, I could hear her potential. And to be fair, the harshness of Tony Malaby's playing on that recording, though I usually love what he does, had a lot to do with my reaction. Good Citizen is from May of 2009 and shows a quick progression. Davis can go inside or outside, and shares that Monk-Nichols-Hill lineage that is a favorite of mine. Of course, Hebert and Rainey give great support. Just over two months after this date, she went back into the studio with Ingrid Laubrock and Tyshawn Sorey and recorded Paradoxical Frog (Clean Feed), one of the best releases of 2010. She's one to keep an eye on.
  16. Thanks for the link.
  17. Thanks to JSngry, Chuck, and J.A.W. for the feedback. As a Taylor fanatic (and Mosaic LP box owner), I can sleep easy tonight!
  18. Are all the Candid releases included in the Mosaic set? And was the Newport performance part of the "Masters of Modern Piano" 2 record set that also had Mary Lou Williams and others?
  19. Well, I still didn't buy it!
  20. I heard it in a music store and was shocked how lean and mean the band sounded, and I've never been a fan.
  21. I like Bley's work, but to me he doesn't have as distinctive a sound as Jarrett. I have trouble recognizing Bley when I hear a track without knowing who it is.
  22. Is this archived on the site? I can't tell since I don't know German.
  23. Lossing does a great job on Samuel Blaser's Consort in Motion, one of my favorites from last year. I haven't heard any of his Hat Hut stuff, however.
  24. I thought about them as well when this topic was posted.
