  1. I have soft spot for Sun Ship because as a teenager in 1974 I walked into my local record store and bought this as my first exposure to Coltrane. I also picked up my first exposure to Ornette Coleman, Crisis, that day.
  2. King, I'll be interested to know what you think about The Convergence Quartet CD - I almost got that myself.
  3. What a nice remembrance. Thanks for sharing.
  4. I ordered the Parker/Evans along with Achim Kaufmann's Grunen and Micheal Attias' Twines of Colesion.
  5. It didn't have an end date in the email.
  6. Clean Feed is doing their annual beginning of the year sale on selected titles: http://www.cleanfeed-records.com/discolistagemPreco.asp Among those they're selling that I can vouch for as being excellent are: Matt Bauder - Day in Pictures Peter Evans - Live in Lisbon Ken Filiano - Dreams From a Clown Car Samuel Blaser - Pieces of Old Sky SKM - Three Sandell Trio/Butcher - Strokes
  7. You can play a lot of music in three minutes.
  8. Thanks for the tip - I love Samuel Blaser.
  9. I saw Osby years ago at a club in Deep Ellum. He was part of a Blue Note all-star band with Stephon Harris, Jason Moran, and others whose names I've forgotten. The whole crew couldn't have been more disinterested, with the exception of Harris. Still, I'm interested in going...
  10. Also, they're bringing Trio 3 on 2/16!
  11. Always liked that song - definitely a guilty pleasure...and that's alright with me!
  12. Received an email from Nameless Sound the other day. Roscoe Mitchell will be doing a week's residency in Houston in late March, culminating in an awards gala on March 28. kh, Thanks for the info. Most tickets to Wynton are $68 each! No thanks!
  13. She's great on Fashion Police.
  14. For those who like Nicole Mitchell, the new Dennis Fournier on RogueArt, called Watershed, is really good. The sax player also plays an EWI, which almost caused me to pass on it, but it works in that context.
  15. Here are my top releases for 2012 in order, followed by a separate list of honorable mentions. You can read capsule descriptions of each on my blog. Michael Formanek - Small Places (ECM) Michael Attias - Spun Tree (Clean Feed) Simon Nabatov - Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols (Leo) Tomas Fujiwara – The Air is Different (482 Music) Harris Eisenstadt - Canada Day Octet (482 Music) Nils Wogram - Complete Soul (nwog) Angelica Sanchez - Wires & Moss (Clean Feed) Eric Revis – Parallax (Clean Feed) Vijay Iyer Accelerando (ACT) And the honorable mentions (in alphabetical order): 9Volt with Tim Berne – Open Circuit (OutNow) Tim Berne – Snakeoil (ECM) Catatumbo – Catatumbo (Babel Label) Harris Eisenstadt - Canada Day III (Songlines) Devin Gray - Dirigo Rataplan (Skirl) Mary Halvorson - Bending Bridges (Firehouse 12) Steve Lehman – Dialect Fluorescent (Pi) Living by Lanterns – New Myth/Old Science (Cuneiform) Tom Rainey - Camino Cielo Echo (Intakt) Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers (Cuneiform) Weston/Laubrock/Marshall – Haste (Emanem) Promising, but arrived too recently to potentially make either list: Paul Giallorenzo Trio – PG3 (NotTwo) Roscoe Mitchell, Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble – Three Compositions (RogueArt) Watershed (Dennis Fournier) – Watershed (RogueArt)
  16. Putting aside his groups for a moment, some of his best sax playing to date is found on Eric Revis' new CD Parallax.
  17. Now, now, it's not that bad! I've listened to some of Aurora, and I appreciate the unusual approach Serpa and Blake take, but I do think she sounds out of tune at times.
  18. Just received the new Rogue Art CD Watershed by drummer Dennis Fournier with a mix of European and Chicago musicians, including Nicole Mitchell. Really good! Never heard of Fournier before but he's an interesting composer as well.
  19. Nicely put. And this causes me to reconsider Ayler, who I've always thought was very limited, but as you said might not have been interested in "playing the changes".
  20. A reminder that we have until Dec. 14 to contribute to this fund.
  21. I always thought they were singing "You're Motorhead" but that didn't make any sense. "You're motoring" isn't much better.
  22. I second his choice of Kris Davis, Aeriol Piano (Clean Feed)
  23. One of my co-workers said that my jazz was "gay".
  24. Congratulations - I saw this mentioned on a site, can't remember where...
