I have soft spot for Sun Ship because as a teenager in 1974 I walked into my local record store and bought this as my first exposure to Coltrane. I also picked up my first exposure to Ornette Coleman, Crisis, that day.

Putting aside his groups for a moment, some of his best sax playing to date is found on Eric Revis' new CD Parallax.

Now, now, it's not that bad! I've listened to some of Aurora, and I appreciate the unusual approach Serpa and Blake take, but I do think she sounds out of tune at times.

Just received the new Rogue Art CD Watershed by drummer Dennis Fournier with a mix of European and Chicago musicians, including Nicole Mitchell. Really good! Never heard of Fournier before but he's an interesting composer as well.

Nicely put. And this causes me to reconsider Ayler, who I've always thought was very limited, but as you said might not have been interested in "playing the changes".
