  1. Clunky, I'm glad I was able to bring Kris Davis to your attention. I want to do more reviews but can't get the time! If you want more prime Mary Halvorson, the latest download from Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation site is Trio (NYC) 2011 from the Diamond Curtain Wall group of Braxton, Halvorson and Bynum. It's fantastic. That group will, in time, rival his classic Quartet in terms of significance.
  2. The new Anti House record is very nice and a cohesive statement, and you have to take it for what it is; it doesn't ever get very explosive. Still, I like it a lot.
  3. Her new CD Capricorn Climber just came out on Clean Feed.
  4. Yeah, I like the Sonic guys too. They used to have a couple that were funny as well.
  5. How do you purchase tickets if you're not in Houston? I've called and emailed them, but have gotten no response.
  6. I'm talking with my wife about going down for the final concert as well. She's not a big fan of "freaky jazz", as she calls it, but she's a gamer. Hopefully we'll meet at the show.
  7. I just got Unknown Known and have played it through once. My first impression is favorable. I also liked Started by the Gabriela Friedli Trio on Intakt. Next on my pile: the new Ingrid Laubrock Anti House and As The Sea by Samuel Blaser.
  8. Don't mess with His Purple Badness!
  9. I thought, at least in his early days, that Mehldau had an Evans influence, although I haven't listened to any of his recent output. I'm curious what musicians think, based on their technical knowledge.
  10. I might be having a brain freeze, but JOS?
  11. Yes, snagged one a couple of days ago. Thanks for the heads-up.
  12. Truth is, he was right about most of them too. Several slow sellers were issued on CD and they were slow sellers again. Don Wilkerson, George Braith, Leo Parker and Booker Ervin were always tough sellers. Not every Blue Note artist garners much more interest today than they did in years gone by. Only a few like Grant Green became hotter as the years went by. One of their bigger sellers back in the day, The Three Sounds, seem to have lost their cachet today. That's why so few of their LPs were reissued on CD in the US. Interesting that Booker Ervin wasn't a good seller for BN. The 2LP reissue Back From The Gig is great.
  13. Evan Parker was awhile coming for me too. Partly, it was because his catalog was so enormous by that time, the late 90's/early oughts, that I didn't know where to begin. And some descriptions of his playing made his music seem somewhat forbidding. Oh, and I've only recently started to listen to much of Bill Evans or Chet Baker.
  14. Whoops, thought it was strange that everyone wouldn't know about the existing select, and it turns out they did (shuffles away sheepishly)
  15. The Sam Rivers Mosaic Select has been out for awhile now.
  16. I'm not enough of a Dunmall fan to pull the trigger on this one. And don't get me started about the bagpipes!
  17. Just don't rush the stage, Stevie Ray! I don't want to read about you in the paper. I need to break out the CDs again.
  18. I got an email from DMG about a few copies of a Paul Dunmall/FMR 49 CD + 1 DVD set!!!
  19. I've been listening to it via NPR; Shorter and Perez sound great, but Blade sounds overly bombastic in spots to my ears.
  20. Good to know.
