  1. Please share thoughts on the CD when you're ready. will do. I've only listened once through so I'm not ready to comment as of yet Did you see my brief comments on the 8/10 set @ Birdland? No, I missed that.
  2. Please share thoughts on the CD when you're ready.
  3. I've posted a review of the new duet album from François Houle and Håvard Wiik on my blog. The recording consists of a mix of composed pieces and free improvisations, and for fans of the Giuffre trio or chamber jazz in general, it's essential listening.
  4. Holding Together is still my favorite Oliver Lake album. I've never heard anything else by him I've liked as much. Can someone comment on the Bley recordings? They get decidedly mixed reviews on All Music.

    Evan Parker

9/17 Tuesday 8 and 10pm Rocket Science Peter Evans (trumpet) Craig Taborn (piano) Sam Pluta (computer) Evan Parker (saxes) This group just released an album on Evan's More is More label. I'm curious to hear it. And the album that the Evans/Lee/Parker trio made about a year ago is great.
  6. That Living By Lanterns album is really nice.
  7. isn't mary a swingin' peach, and so nice? a few months ago during a late night (3am ) jam at small's, mary sat in at the steinway with the cats for perhaps an hour-luv her bopping!!!!!!!!!!!! She plays piano too?
  8. Wow. Bad, bad, bad example of trying to use social media to promote your brand. Wonder if they cooked that up themselves or had an outside firm recommend it.
  9. I'll probably pony up for the Dresser and the Wooley here pretty soon...I also want to get the new Drew Gress on Pirouet.
  10. He is a good one. Really like his work with Uri Caine. Yes, I really like Alessi as well. I understand he has a CD coming out on ECM sometime this fall. (Cue horrified reaction from Stevie Rey!)
  11. This may be an oversimplification, but to me Jarrett took what Bley was doing and injected more melody into the equation, including the gospel influence. And that translated into greater popularity for him vs. Bley. It's interesting to remember that Open, To Love and Facing You were released on ECM within a year of each other. Jarrett hit his peak, IMO, with his 70's American Quartet and European Quartet.
  12. In a straight ahead vein, I like Ryan Kisor, although the CD I have of his is a few years old now.
  13. Gress has a new one with the same group on Pirouet called The Sky Inside.
  14. Yes, and I hope Babel Label releases them as LPs - they did a great job with Catatumbo. BTW, the new Convergence Quartet is one of the very best things I've heard this year. It got a great review on Stef's Free Jazz blog.
  15. Good news-I'm ready to order. I'm a big Russell fan too; was this reissued as an LP on Arista/Freedom in the 70s?
  16. Did they mean Scottish Lox?
  17. At least he can laugh at himself!
  18. Chuck, what label is it on?
  19. I did, and I was thinking about posting about it, so thanks for the nudge. I had avoided this group because I was put off by the emphasis on standards. I mean, they've been done to death, haven't they? How many more versions of "All The Things You Are" do we need? Also, I had heard maybe one song a few years back and thought it was snoresville at the time, for some reason. Well I stand corrected! I am loving this CD. Jarrett finds a way to say something new with his approach to each composition. And perhaps because he has a reputation for being difficult, I'm surprised at how much wit and humanity he puts into his performance. Sometimes he'll play very close to the melody or resolve a phrase in a straight-forward way, if the situation calls for it. I think that actually takes some courage, when a lot of jazz musicians would try to go in a more abstract direction. The interplay between the three musicians is as good as advertised. I love the fire-breathing days of Jack DeJohnette, so it's interesting to hear how he adjusts his approach in this context. "Somewhere" has me thinking about a second Standards Trio purchase. (Sigh)
  20. Well duh, it's invisible because it hadn't been invented yet!
  21. Congratulations you two!
  22. You got that right, bro.
