The one thing that people never point out is that it is safer to travel with credit cards than carrying hundreds of dollars in cash in New York City. Payments for cabs can blow through a lot of cash and while certain hotel chains allow cardholders to cash checks, I would rather leave my checkbook at home. I’ve had cab drivers whine about credit card usage, yet many of them fail to realize the advantages, including less cash for them to worry about losing in a robbery and potentially more generous tips from those running low on cash.

Mariano and Twardzik are on the record.

One of 21 vintage LPs I bought in a local store yesterday, all but one was under $4. Somebody must have cleaned out their father's or husband's collection.

Vintage Jazz Performances on The Today Show
Ken Dryden replied to Ken Dryden's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I remember Brubeck being on the Today Show and it was his birthday, he played “Happy Birthday” for himself as a cake was brought out. -
I go to hear him just one or two times, the last I recall being in Toronto during IAJE with Benny Green. This is really sad, he was a great player and entertainer.

Vintage Jazz Performances on The Today Show

From Australian TV, a solo piano set without an audience by Duke Ellington: I am guessing that the date may be circa February 7, 1970, as he was touring Australia at that time. The set list is not in Timmer's Ellingtonia discography (Fourth Edition). In its first few decades, The Today Show would feature live jazz performances from time to time. One I've been looking for was an early 1978 performance by the Jazz Piano Quartet, in early 1978, unfortunately, I only heard the announcement of it coming up right as I was leaving for work. I don't think it was the same quartet as on the RCA Victor LP (Hank Jones, Dick Hyman, Marian McPartland and Roland Hanna), but it has been a few decades since I heard that promo. If anyone runs across a video, please share it. Here are some miscellaneous peformance videos that I found in my research: Nellie Lutcher: If you haven't heard Nellie Lutcher's appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, you should check it out. I think I uploaded it to archive.org but if not, I hope that I can do so soon. JIm Hall on The tonight Show 1992: The Modern Jazz Quartet on The Today Show 1984:

I rarely view live streams, though I ought to, given the jazz desert where I live.

I haven’t been to Smoke since the renovation, but their seating capacity can’t be anywhere near what some other clubs have, like Dizzy’s, or had, like the Jazz Standard or Zinno. The sight lines are far better than the uncomfortable, narrow layout of the Blue Note.

I snapped it up soon after it was released, a great example of Clifford Jordan in his prime.

I just got a digital advance of Grasse’s book for review, though it will be held for publication for awhile. I hope that some of these recordings can be commercially issued by a legitimate label.

Maybe we need a separate thread for best song titles. I would nominate "Huk2E" by Phil Woods and "Flight of the Foo Birds" by Neal Hefti. I guess I would add Louis Armstrong's "Yes, I'm in the Barrel." I did a two hour show on song titles with hidden meanings, though I couldn't go into specifics for some of them on the air.

Track 1 was previously identified as "Little Niles," played by James Spaulding. Track 2 does not feature Pharoah Sanders, I believe it was previously identified. Track 3 is not Barry Harris nor Mulgrew Miller. Hint: the pianist is still living. Track 4 is not Kenny Dorham. Track 5 is not Ken Peplowski. Track 6 is not Lee Morgan. Track 7 is correctly identified, but it is not Art Tatum. Track 8 is "Star Eyes," but doesn't feature Stan Getz and Kenny Barron. Track 9 is not Roy Eldridge. Track 10 is not "Yardbird Suite" nor does it feature Hampton Hawes. Track 11 is not Charlie Parker. Track 12 doesn't feature Maria Schneider. Track 13 was previously identified as Gil Evans. Track 14 was previously identified as Stuff Smith. Track 15 was previously identified as the pre-Joe Morello Dave Brubeck Quartet playing "I'm In A Dancing Mood."

I always thought Destined For Cutout would make a great title.

The audio quality is pretty good and Johnny Smith was always fantastic.

I didn''t take your initial reply as harsh at all. Track 14 was previously identified as Stuff Smith, along with the tunes. Stuff's sound is pretty distinctive and edgier than Stephane's, it's fun to hear their recordings together. though there is only one violinist present here. Track 15 was previously identified with a bit of word games as the pre-Joe Morello Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond.

It wouldn't be the first time that a composer was mis-credited on a release....

Bill Evans was quoted as saying that Bill Grauer died in self-defense. Bob Thiele was also known for creative bookkeeping, selling more than 100% ownership of his last label, Red Baron, to investors. His house of cards tumbled after his death. -

One of the best running gags on that sitcom. I never followed golf, but Chi Chi was evidently quite a character. -
You listened to the music and shared your thoughts. That is more than enough for me.
