  1. Wow! "Opus de Funk" Twofer just reissued on Prestige! A very soulful recording featuring Smith on TASTY Hammond, Freddie McCoy on vibes, Eddie McFadden - guit., Wendell Marshall - bass, Leo Stevens- dr. Great balance of soul & jazz - ballads & blues...BEAUTIFUL! Good to hear from Freddie McCoy - only other I've heard is "Spiderman" on Prestige/Japan (not a superlative recording - only "ok")... Would be great to hear MORE of these OOP Prestige Soul-jazz sessions- BRING 'EM ON! ...more Prestige FREDDIE ROACH, FREDDIE MCCOY, GEO. BRAITH, sessions with GRANT GREEN??, OTHER ORGANISTS...Charles Kynard, for example ... FANTASY-Where's the FUNK>???? ok- HAVE to admit Fantasy does kick butt! NICE reissue schedule REALLY! B) Also goes to show Blue Note ain't the ONLY game in town...WHERE's the PRESTIGE RVG SERIES???...I mean, there's a S*ITLOAD of Rudy's work out on the label!!! Other May 25 Fantasy reissues by Harold Mabern and Shirley Scott- any comments on these? - I have not heard them yet.
  2. Looking at the Euro-BNBB makes me realize too that they are a corporate entitity out for profit and not to entertain "fee thought" - look how constricting and status quo the Euroboard looks -"talk about our product/think about buying it!" is the impression I get... Again- as has been said, the best of the old BNBB IS here!
  3. ...or another Bluenote "one hit wonder"?... like Caecille Norby, Denise Jannah...one disk and GONE!........
  4. Anybody have the lowdown? The "temporary" closing looks permanent... I like Organissimo forum better anyway! BTW - Blue Note unleashes another "chicky" singer - "Kerren Ann"...is she "any good?"...
  5. Andrew Hill - "Compulsion" BN 4217 Elvin Jones - "Genesis" BN 4369 Grant Green - "Visions" BN 4373 Blue Mitchell - "Bantu Village" BN 4324 Blue Mitchell - "Collision in Black" BN 4300 Kenny Cox - "Introducing" BN 4302 Kenny Cox - "Multidirection" BN 4339 Ronnie Foster - "Freap with Two Heads" BN 4382 and another vote for the Tyrone Washington "Natural Essence" BN 4274 All rare and deserving of REISSUE! B)
  6. Yeah Kevin- I dig the "yeast factor"! Swirl the bottle towards the end and get the little yeasties to come out and make your weissen TASTY and rich! AND- MUST BE POURED INTO A WEISSEN GLASS!!!! -"Nice & Tall to Taste it ALL"!!! Thanks everyone- keep the suggestions coming- I have a couple of damn good stores here and will look for your recommendations locally first!
  7. Have been enjoying yeast-wheat beer lately and wondered if any of you had favorites to suggest? I've tried a few, enjoyed the Franziskanner unfiltered best...what else to try>???? 1) Franziskanner - unfiltered 2) Franziskanner - dunkel 3) Paulaner - unfiltered 4) Baltik - unfiltered (from St. Petersburg, of all places!) I've also tried some of the US micro-brew wheat beers - UPLAND BREWERY of Bloomington, IN produces a nice wheat beer, but generally the GERMAN wheat beers (hefe weissen) are superior - YUM! Thanks!
  8. I just bought the domestic "Night Lights" for 9.99 new and am quite happy with sound/package. Not sure the extra $ for Japanese would be worth it for such a short, but excellent, session.
  9. I just nabbed this one myself! A very enjoyable session, IMHO. Everyone is in great form, esp. JR. COOK! Wow! I also dig the presence of Bohanon on 'bone - expands the sound (to sextet). Brooks is a master drummer and every occasion to hear him jam is a privilege!
  10. Thanks AB! haven't had much spare time to post/work on avatar lately so I just borrowed your suggestion for now if it's ok with you! I'll work on getting Curley's head to interchange with Alice Coltrane's or some other artist when I get time! -LCM
  11. YUP! Chris' and AB's avatars just freak me out really bad - they ARE great!
  12. Hi all! I just discovered 2 really great cds by Beady Belle - an Oslo band! Great female vocals by Beate Lech - nice mix of dance/jazz/funk/world music - exceptional music for "genre" it is, actually - 2 albums I see so far (again, as others have posted- "Damn those Folks at Dusty Groove!"): 1) "Home" (Jazzland records of Norway - actually an "Emarcy" Universal Company) 2) "Cewbeagappic" (also on Jazzland) High quality & interesting lyrics combined with great musicianship and composition make for a rewarding listening experience! Anybody else have an opinion? Any more info about this band or plans to release more music? Have added band's official web-site: http://www.beadybelle.com/index_en.html
  13. I caught Kurt Last night in Urbana, IL...a tasty program with the Hobgood trio (Hobgood is from Urbana)! Kurt sang mostly from "Man in the Air", but also standards like "Stardust", My Foolish Heart", and "Easy to Love". Very hip voice and fresh approach to lyrics...Definitely a great artist of our time! "Man in the Air" is a very fine release IMHO...
  14. Just got my Pearson set and have enjoyed discs 1 and 3 so far! I really like Duke's work from this period and am always looking for more jazz choral writing so this was a very welcomed set! Have been wanting to get "The Phantom" but not wanting to $pend bucks on the Japanese (if even available). I really didn't care for Pearson much in my youth but here in middle age I've come to dig his sound, piano voicings, and approach to arranging, so I can see how some folks might not be into his later work... "Merry Ole Soul" is pretty cool too...another groovy Christmas collection as hip as Jimmy Smith's or Ella's, etc...
  15. I had the privilege of hearing/seeing Faddis with Jim Pugh at a University of Illinois jazz festival this past June - went THREE NIGHTS in a row- different context each night. This cat kicks butt in SO MANY styles- NOT JUST DIZZY'S! He was quite at home playing in a nonet recreation of Mulligan's "Birth of the Cool" as he was at combo or big band playing - and the "Birth of..." didn't sound like "Dizzy playing Miles" either! He's obviously been working on "Non-Dizzy" sounding contemporary playing as well...KILLER! The dude's consistent too - high AND LOW chops to spare ALL THE TIME! I really hope more people check Mr. Faddis out...He's one mature trumpeter still playing his booty off!
  16. I pre-ordered the Bennie Green Set and can't wait to receive it! Haven't checked mail yet, but can't wait to hear "Congo Lament" and rest of package! "Soul Stirrin'" Conn was real tasty - bet the rest of this Mosaic Select is kick-butt too! Probably will have to spring for the Weston eventually. Hope the Green set arrives today or tomorrow for the long weekend! BTW - Hope everyone here at Organissimo BB has a nice, SAFE, HAPPY, MUSICAL, Memorial Day weekend!
  17. Hey folks! I'm excited and grooving! I just bought and am spinning "Echoes of an Era" CD with Chaka Khan, vocals; Freddie Hubbard, trpt.; Joe Henderson, tenor; Chick-Stanley Clarke-Lenny White, rhythmn section! This album's a MOFO! Chaka is beautiful and sings jazz SO WELL (IMHO)!!!! NICE AS *ELL contributions from ALL members of the band- Freddie, JOE, Chick...Thanks Rhino! I passed on this many yrs. ago - DON'T let it happen to you! By the way, does anyone know if the Griffith Park Collection has been reissued anywhere? Formerly Elektra-Musician??
  18. Hi! I dig the Ashby too! More like "soul" harp- Chicago style soul sounds (good to kick back to)- inspired me to buy "In a Minor Groove/Hip Harp" on Prestige - have not played yet. Also bought the Szabo. It's a pretty decent effort - has first recording of Womack's "Breezin'" - later made a hit by Geo. Benson. Not my favorite Szabo (check out "Man From Two Worlds" by Chico Hamilton!) but a solid session - well worth the price.
  19. Hey there- thanks for the input - I'm still working on this- I did pick up a copy of the Hawkins/Berry on Commodore- TASTY - a great cd overall- I love the early Bean too plus Al Casey - guitar, Art Tatum, Lips Page - all add to the greatness and sense of swing. I hear Bean in Berry - or is it Berry in Bean (re: phrasing and style)? I need to listen further. Thanks for the rec. Chuck- In the back of my mind I was thinking the same about the Chron. Classics- after looking around I came to the conclusion that this might also be best for overview of his diversity. Love the Chron. Classics series anyway!
  20. John Hicks is the pianist on Mobley's "Hi Voltage" session. I've only listened to a couple of times - a while ago (I know- I should be ashamed - will work to fix this when I get TIME). I think there are a couple of tasty solos and some good session work.
  21. Just picked up the new Johnny Hammond (Smith) "Breakout" reissue. A pretty greeazy effort with some real wailin' on the bonus track "It's Too Late"!!! Love the other Johnny Hammond Smith on Prestige! Sonny Phillips on Prestige Rocks too! Check him out with "The Return of Rusty Bryant"!!! Ayeee!
  22. Life was simpler then, but I really like it here. This is such a great board. I prefer the board software in every way to the BNBB. I just hope this board will grow and grow and..... :rsmile: :rsmile: I TOTALLY agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really enjoy using this board software much more than the Blue Note BB software...feels good not to be CONSTANTLY WATCHED BY CORPORATE EYES TOO! Whatt'l Tom at Blue Note do now that all of us wee folk aren't there to CAUSE "TROUBLE"!? They probably have him workin' in the Angel Records warehouse or somethin'!
  23. Thanks Pepe & Africa Brass: 1) I'll check out the AAJ discussion 2) I'll definitely grab the Hawkins/Berry - Commodore had such great music - I really love the Hawk too - this should most likely be killer material. I also just plain enjoy the approach to music making & the ambiance of music from this era. Saw a couple of other items on Tower website- perhaps these are covered in the AAJ discussion on Berry. Thanks again!
  24. Hi all: I was listening to some sides a couple of weeks ago with Chu as a sideman- probably with Hawkins, Prez, or Charlie Christian- Are there any essential recordings (Commodore or other labels) that feature him in a more prominent role as a soloist? I like his sound and would like to hear him blow a bit. Thanks!
  25. Naw, as the sayin' goes - "I'm a victim of soicumstance!" Woob woob woob woob woob! I like the set-up & appearance of this board quite a bit- all the best of the BNBB plus!!! Stooges actually made a movie with Louis Jordan - contains a couple of great musical numbers by Jordan & band! See ya! (I usually check BB's once or twice a day) -LCM
