  1. I love The Dead too - sometime's nothing else will do...I have the WB box set of the studio albums. Also have been enjoying Garcia's work with David Grisman - "Shady Grove" - NICE MUSIC - new but rooted in Old Timey music of Doc Watson, Clarence Ashley, et al.! Our local community radio station broadcast's the Grateful Dead Hour every Saturday night from 8-9 p.m. Nice regular thing for Saturday evening partying! Have come to like "Ratdog" quite a bit - lot o' horns and saxophones!
  2. Beginning in July the State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as "work zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by the devices will be mailed a $375 ticket for the first offense, but a second ticket will cost $1000 and comes with a 90-day license suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allows insurance companies to raise their insurance rates. This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city using photo enforcement. The state will begin with two camera vans issuing tickets in zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photographs of both the driver's face and license plate are taken. Officials announced the plan on the Dan Ryan Expressway suggesting Chicago area roads are likely to be a target. Illinois Tollway Executive Director Jack Hartman promised more work zones: "Since the Tollway just launched our $5.3 billion Congestion Relief Plan", drivers will see more work zones on the Tollway than they have in the past." Go to this website and read: <http://www.dot.state.il.us/press/r033005.html>http://www.dot.state.il.us/press/r033005.html I'M HIGHLY CONFIDENT THESE GADGETS ARE ERROR-FREE!!!! Anything like this in place in YOUR part of the world??
  3. Yeah, put me down for Uncle Sam cereal too! Downright tasty with soy milk! I dig the little FLAX SEEDS floating about! Gives me the daily dose of Omega 3 acids.
  4. LITERALLY! The blue-tinted Spanish ed. covers are sorta tacky, but I can't complain about the music or price! Thought I'd NEVER get to hear "Poppin'" - Hope it's as good as I anticipate! ← Yeah, I dig the Mobley since hearing it! Have only had time to play once but will revisit this weekend. First impression is that everybody is swinging hard - esp. Pepper Adams and the rhythm section! Love Pepper's work in general!! Art and Hank sound pretty sweet too. Sound quality is good too.
  5. I DO I DO! I appreciate the fact that one obscure BN recording surfaces in this series from time to time - LIKE the Leo Parker, Lonnie Smith ("Think"), and the Mobley "Poppin'" I ain't a-gettin' any younger waiting for BN USA to get these in print, so for now...
  6. MMMMM...is that one by by Freddie Green or Freddie Red(d)?
  7. LITERALLY! The blue-tinted Spanish ed. covers are sorta tacky, but I can't complain about the music or price! Thought I'd NEVER get to hear "Poppin'" - Hope it's as good as I anticipate!
  8. Just ordered "POPPIN'" by Mobley Spanish Edition, 6.99 from the "Groove of Dust!!!!!" They seem to have received a whole new shipment - Mingus at Town Hall, Groove Holmes, and others! Good Luck!
  9. I also dig Freddie Roach quite a bit! Would anyone here know where one might purchase a cd issue of his Prestige release "My People (Soul People)? I think it's the only one of his albums as a leader I can't find. Thanks!
  10. I share your concern, Dan. If these tracks were already previously issued, then WTF? Another Blue-Note repackaging scheme? Would rather see the rest of Grant's BN output come out...
  11. I think Bear Family's "Man in Black 1954-58" box set probably has all the Sun recordings - with bonus tracks & alt. takes plus swell booklet too...a bit more costly at around 100 dollars. Sound should be decent.
  12. Sorry to hear of Gordon Brisker's passing - I had a chance to meet with him briefly in '04 and showed him some of my big band writing - hoped to see him again this year.
  13. Dana Hall is on the jazz faculty at the University of Illinois now - a truly outstanding and GREAT SOUNDing drummer...watch out- more to come from this cat - soon to be a "doctor" - in musicology from what I understand... I really need to get to the Showcase more often- still about 3 hrs. into the city &parking for me....
  14. Hi all - I'm in the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois area and we have got a happening scene here...U of Illinois' jazz studies program has helped kick things up a bit - 3-4 nightclubs that host jazz AND jam sessions on a regular basis including my favorite, THE IRON POST in Urbana... JEFF HELGESEN, a local trumpet rage, plays frequently. This cat was with Ray Charles' band for a while, but prefers to be local and boy am I glad! Jeff TEARS IT UP - consistently - and I just love his playing! He could EASILY hold his own with Hargrove, Rotondi, Hagans, etc., but is content to be HERE! ...I sure am thankful! Jeff is super-cool too and it's a pleasure to rap to him.... I posted his web site below- Y'ALL WANNA CHECK IT OUT!!!! In addition to local listings for Champaign-Urbana clubs, Jeff's Web Site is one of THE BEST music web sites I've encountered! IF YOU'RE A TRUMPET PLAYER YOU'RE GONNA REALLY DIG the transcriptions of solos by Fagerquist, Hubbard, Conte, et al., plus all the articles and useful information... ENJOY! Jeff Helgesen's web page
  15. I do dig "Blue Spirits" & "Breaking Point" & "Open Sesame" - Freddie's Blue Note output is pretty tasty in general - but "Ready for Freddie" SOARS above the rest! I think some of Freddie's best playing can be found on the Impulse release "The Body & The Soul" - Thermo SMOKES! I also dig Oliver Nelson's "Blues & Abstract Truth" a whole bunch!!! As to Lee's playing- I find it to be inconsistent as he progressed into the future - The group with Maupin, Meritt, Mabern, and Roker really does it for me as far as later Mogie goes- But I just get the impression that he was TOO STONED to play well towards the end...shot embouchre and not so profound ideas... BUT - I dig BOTH Freddie and Lee a lot - I imagine it's DAMN HARD to play up to the public's expectations ALL THE TIME! Even Freddie admited (in an article I read) that playing 48 choruses like Coltrane every night took its toll on the ol' CHOPS! AS FAR AS LIVE FREDDIE IS CONCERNED- I just bought a DVD of Freddie live at the Vanguard - it's top notch IMO - a must see - Freddie is in great form - early 1980's - trim & fit - he's the only horn so he plays his arse off- also nice Cedar Walton, Ron Carter & Lenny White....
  16. Heya Kevin- Please BEG Michael to reissue "CONSEQUENCE" by Jackie McLean - A BURNIN' SESSION WITH MOGIE! Why this is not out in some form boggles me brain! Another vote here for the J.R. Monterose - Japanese reissue due out this month, but probably without the bonus track...
  17. Well, DUH! Even worse, it's probably ARTIFICIAL FLAVORING!!!
  18. Just more bluenote re-packaging I won't invest in...WTF? Unless I want to upgrade (or downgrade, as the case might be), there's not much in the recent (or upcoming) wave of reissues I will score... Really weird- first time in a long while I haven't bought blue note for months... IMO - BN also might as well drop the conn and just go RVG all the way...what now justifies the differince in price? As with Johnny Coles - "Little Johhny C", "Ready for Freddie" & perhaps others - just because it's called a conn doesn't mean it really is limited edition. perhaps should be called "Con" series?
  19. "Horn of plenty/Two Sides of Slide" is available on Fresh Sounds and has great early Slide - George Coleman, Freddie Hubbard, and Booker Little also grace the cd...nice piano-less octet writing! I dig Slide's sound and ideas - his writing is usually quite superb!
  20. I agree! have had this on vinyl... great to see the chess/argo/cadet trickle out! Also want to comment on the Ramsy Lewis "Another Voyage" reissue here (rather than starting another thread),....really a SOUL-R&B album...can hear roots of EW&F... It's a GROOVY session, but not ground breaking...Ramsey also plays electric piano, which I happen to dig - sort of a "pre-Sungoddess" sound.
  21. Hey there! I finally got my "Watch What Happens" disc in the mail... After listening to it a few times over the weekend, I can report that I really like it. For Brad: The voices are in unison or octaves most of the time and primarilly function to articulate the melody or provide some background...I don't think they really add or take away all that much. Rather, they attempt to snag a wider audience for Vick. They are tolerable and seem to frame his WONDERFUL tenor and SOPRANO sax playing! Half the tracks are with voices and orchestra and half are with quartet. Orchestra cuts are arranged & conducted by Ed Bland- of Vanguard Records, James Moody, & Bunky Green fame? The quartet cuts are great and feature Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Grady Tate to advantage. A very "Blue-Note-like atmosphere".., I'd be curious to hear the other 2 new Vick RCA reissues & opinions re...
  22. Yeah, I took a chance too - ordered the cd with the "chorus of breezy females" - always been a Vick fan - & I like the mellower soul-pop jazz voice/orchestra/horn thang from time to time... should be great - Hancock on piano also...RCA put out a lot of tasty vinyl...but would rather hear on cd. AND to make the order "more of a value" I ordered up the Young Lions session on VeeJay with Morgan, Shorter, Strozier et al.
  23. I bought and played a couple of months ago and have heard in past on vinyl...I'd say it's among my favorite Phil recordings...exciting and swinging - if I remember correctly! I don't think you'll be disappointed!
