  1. I wouldn't mind a re-issue of 3 Sounds/Oliver Nelson Orchestra "Coldwater Flat."
  2. 3 more potentially excellent reissues from DG label scheduled for July 2: Ahmed Abdul-Malik "Spellbound" Goerge Braith - "Musart" Stan Hunter/Sonny Fortune - "Trip on the Strip" I haven't heard any of them but they look great! All from Prestige vault. WAY TO GO DUSTY GROOVE!
  3. This IS really nice. Got my copy recently. Really SOLID grooves from MILESTONE. I really enjoy both albums. Lytle (pronounced "Little" even by Dusty Groove sales people ) was a hella great vibesman.
  4. ..What's all this about a Lumpy Rutherford Quartet with Beaver Harris? Huh? It's all a dream......
  5. Caught Henry Grimes with Avreeyal Ra last night out here in Champaign, IL. Simply beautiful!
  6. Damn, I forgot about that one. How is that LP? I had a chance to buy it at a used record store, but it was kind of pricey. I think there was a Phil Woods feature on it. How is that? I remember I was working with George Barrows the day ON died; he was shocked. According to a book I was reading, ON got a lot of grief from black musicians because he used white guys like Woods and Ed Shaughnessey on his records. They used to slide pictures of slave ships under his door. ON said he just wanted to use musicians who could play his music the best it could be played. Jazzhattan Suite is an exceptional album. "A Penthouse Dawn" has some sweet and beautiful moments in the writing and in Phil's blowing. I always felt that Oliver and Phil had a spritual connection in their playing...a beauty that surfaced when Phil was blowing lead alto on Oliver's charts or the respect Phil payed Oliver whenever he soloed in Oliver's band. Jazzhattan Suite, is for me, the big band Nelson album where everything came together beautifully - not like "Full Nelson" on Verve where you wonder what's at the heart and soul of it all or why the session didn't really impact.
  7. Jazz Interactions Orchestra "Jazzhattan Suite" Verve records. Included in Mosaic O Nelson set and partially on Verve Jazz Masters 48.
  8. My link !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Reuben Wilson - "On Broadway?" Three Sounds "Coldwater Flat??
  10. Ordered the Ronnie Foster "Two headed Freap;" 14.95, I think. Not too much of a risk at this price. We'll see what the deal is when I finally receive it.
  11. Nina was also anti-rascism in many of her songs. She had a deep and soulful voice - I really think of her as a "soul" singer, especially on them there RCA sides! Love the earlier Colpix material too. For me an acquired taste. I didn't dig Nina right away...had to grow to like her vibrato. Cassandra is groovy but I haven't listened to her enough to make any comparison. I dig New Moon Daughter and Belly of the Sun, though.
  12. What a drag - one of the most soulful tenors. Period. Call it whatchwanna, he played his arse off. Rest in peace, Griff...
  13. Sorry to hear of Hiram's passing- I too saw him with Gil Evans in the 80's at Chicago Jazz Fest; Dug his work with Carla Bley.
  14. For all you Lorez fans - The Bastardstm have just reissued the lovely "For Swingers Only" on their own label. I remember this recording from my past and it sounds just as wonderful today. IMO "Baltimore Oriole" is superb. Pick this one up if you love Lorez! BTW - I did email D.G. and ask them to reissue "Yusef at Cranbrook" since they're on an "Argo roll!" Edit= Interesting to note - this is a "Universal Music Special Markets" product. "All tracks courtesy of Geffen Records!!!"
  15. Oh my. Sad news indeed - what a fine arranger and pianist - as much an original as the other greats. I'm bumming big time - he was among my favorites R.I.P., man.
  16. 1) Mark Vinci - Sonny Stitt spoke highly of this mofo! 2) West Coaster/Avant alto - Jim Ryan of Forward energy - quite a creative caucasian!
  17. I dig county music too - Eddy had a very strong and pure heartfelt approach to singing. R.I.P.
  18. Get well soon Clark! Heard him play a little out here a couple years back...still had the chops & the vibe!
  19. I've got this one and the Smithsonian collection. The Revenant is a mini hard back book with nice notes & photos plus a CD of Dock's early recordings. Seems like a good thing for Document to release, but who know's if that'll ever happen. There's a new company called Archeophone Records doing old-timey stuff. They're actually here in town (Champaign, IL)! You might contact them and express your desire to see the old Dock Boggs' stuff from the 1920's come out again! - LCM
  20. I feel the same. As a matter of fact I was just thinking how nice it would be to have something FRESH come out from Concord ...HOW BOUT THAT 2 LP SET ON PRESTIGE BY GILDO MAHONES for example? To their credit - Stax just put out a decent Carla Thomas previously unreleased live set from the Bohemian Caverns... It's smarter IMO to snatch up all the OJC's you can before they vanish as opposed to reinvesting in the same standard fare.
  21. The Verve "Jazz Masters" Tal Farlow is a nice collection of Verve release highlights if you don't want to get the Mosaic set. Most of the individual Verve Tal albums are import only or not available. Listening to this the other night and picked up on the connection between Tal and John McLaughlin - just listen to the way they both spin out lines of music in a similar fashion - AWESOME!
  22. Karen Borca wails on the Jimmy Lyons Black Saint release "Wee Sneezawee"
  23. Sad news; R.I.P. Oscar. I was lucky enough to catch solo OP at the Kool Jazz Festival many years a go at Blossom Music Center in Ohio. A friend couldn't go and sold me his ticket. He wasn't sure where the seat was. Turned out to be FRONT ROW!
  24. Sorry to hear. He was on many great sessions. The Patao & Totico release on Verve is sensational! Here's the real cause of his demise, though... "The plane made an emergency stop in Cleveland..."
