String quartets by contemporaries of Beethoven
soulpope replied to Bol's topic in Classical Discussion
Ferdinand Ries - subject recordings are highly recommended !! http://www.amazon.com/Ries-String-Quartets-Vol-1-Ferdinand/dp/B000CGYO8G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1287739959&sr=8-2 http://www.amazon.com/Ferdinand-Ries-String-Quartets-Vol/dp/B00111WS2U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1287740018&sr=8-2 -
While reading this thread, I wondered that FRIEDRICH GULDA never was mentioned. His Beethoven Sonatas are "state of the art" for sure, either the unbelievable 1968 recordings (available as bargain box) http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Piano-Sonata-Concerto-Box/dp/B000BQV52A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1287739523&sr=1-1 or the just recently released 1954/55 recording(a little pricier) http://www.amazon.de/S%C3%A4mtliche-Klaviersonaten-1-32-Variation-Bag/dp/B003L544SK/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1287739670&sr=1-2

Like Paul mentioned, probably 81 tracks are a little bit too much as Syl Johnson was not the most versatile singer (to me !!) - nevertheless thumbs up for this labour of love supplied via the guys from Numero !!

Great news this will be released as CD`s too !! KR Emil

"given the length of the songs, and knowing how Pepper could drift in those late days between brilliant playing and pseduo-post-Trane wandering" in said one week stay @ronnie scott`s both the late art pepper and pianist milcho leviev were at their best and based on the part we do know (i.e mole lp`s "blues for the Fisherman" and "true blues") it would be of a suprise, if the remaining - previously unreleased - tracks should lack quality. hope this will see as 4 (?)cd set the light of day too...should be eventually no problem, as the remastering is already done.....the lp set is (even for diehard pepper followers) VERY expensive ;-(( kr emil

Finally. after a two year hiatus, Universal Austria released the second 2CD set featuring vintage recordings of Austrian all time jazz great Erich Kleinschuster with guest stars. CD1 features Jimmy Heath and Art Farmer at their peak in 1968 (giving a valuable addendum/comparisson to Mosaic`s current "Single" reissue of "The time and the place" featuring the same line-up some two years earlier !!) and CD2 Slide Hampton&Jimmy Woode in early 1971. Again the production is clearly a labour of love and interested board members can obtain this via ( i `m not holding any particular interest in this onlineshop ) www.redoctopus.at Let`s marvel with with releases like this one as long they "keep coming".... Best, Emil

Boardmembers, as the summer starts fading away just wanted to remind you that the second installment of the Erich Kleinschuster reissues, this time featuring Art Farmer, is in preparation for late fall 2005. As seemingly Vol. 1 with C. Jordan and C. Jones is still NOT available in the U.S (at least based on Dustygrooves website), this is still in stock with the austrian store mentioned earlier in the thread. I`m counting the days for Vol.2 Cheers, Emil

mikeweil although i do also prefer a bass sound "up to the fore", i think we should settle for what we got ( and this is great music). Speaking of sessions recorded in germany in the 60s and early 70s, i would love to see somebody having the guts and start issuing the NDR workshops in a similar series finally like the kleinschuster project. the concerts i know (nathan davis/ted curson/jimmy woode etc from 1966 and the fantastic rahsaan roland kirk from 1972 feat. a dazzling 12min plus version of "volunterred slavery" come to my mind !!!) are top notch. hope this will happen sometimes..... cheers+grüße aus wien emil

Thanks! That link doesn't fully load for me right now, but I'll keep trying. ← After much perseverance and invaluable site translation by e-mail/hand-holding by the Red Octopus staff (once again, it seems that everybody in the world can handle English, but dumbfuck Americans like me can't handle anything else...), I got an order placed. Ended up being a tad pricey (a little over $40 after shipping), but I figure it's two of my favorite tenorists, it's previously unissued material, it's a 2-CD set, and it's a limited edition (geographically as well as numerically, it seems). If I overpaid by a few bucks, so be it. Such are the ways of the Carpe Diemist. ← jsngry, glad you finally succeeded. it seems the postage cost is aprox the same as if ordering from europa via dustygroove. nevertheless, after listening to the music you most likely will rate this as bargain of the year .............enjoy&best greetings from vienna, emil

JSngry, try this link from redoctopus. http://www.redoctopus.at/shop.php?mode=sho...1404605c366a0f5 Cheers, Emil

As mentioned before, just issued yesterday and a local Austrian release. The title is "henderson.jones.jordan - kleinschuster sextett 68/69 vol.1" universal 9872145 This is a limited edition, so don`t know wether the usual oversea sources like dustygroove will stock it. A shop in Vienna Austria having it on stock is Red Octopus Records, www. redoctopus.at and they do MAILORDER (and no, I`m not owner/beneficiar of the shop, but a longtime customer !!). Believe, just Joe Henderson playing "Chelsea Bridge" and "Inner urge" are worth the entry price .......but there is much more in there. All the best&enjoy Emil

Boardmembers, just wanted to inform about a landmark release as of May 25th, 2005 : Austrian trombone player Erich Kleinschuster and his Sextett (featuring Fritz Pauer and Jimmy Woode inter alias) recorded a number of sessions for the Austrian Broadcast in the years 1968 - 1972, featuring several of international guest stars. The first double CD features two sessions with Clifford Jordan, one with Carmell Jones and the fantatic recordings with Joe Henderson. The first cd (more to follow) was released by Universal Austria. This is obviously a "labour of love" and should be supported - but again, it`s the great music making this A MUST BUY !! Cheers, Emil
